I feel like we would’ve reached out by now if we were going to, but idk.

Maybe there's some kind of red flag we don't know about. Arkansas hasn't reached out either and they at least send a text message to damn near every kid in the portal.

Could have something to do with still playing but Muss is a machine so maybe not

An article came out a few months ago and Muss reaches out to most transfers but eliminates a good chuck of them right off the bat depending on their responses regarding playing time, family atmosphere etc

College basketball transfer portal news: A budding star to know, early recruiting buzz, more big names coming

In just a few years, the NCAA Transfer Portal for college basketball has taken on a life of its own. Outside of the NCAA Tournament, it is the most entertaining and talked-about topic in all of college hoops come springtime.

This year, the portal is once again generating big talk. With the NCAA allowing a first transfer without having to sit out, grad transfers still being available, and many players making use of the extra year given to them as a result of Covid-19, the transfers are once again hitting at a dizzying pace.

The pace isn’t quite as nuclear this year as it was last year, but there is lots of talent available.

Earlier this week, 247Sports released our initial top 10 ranking of players in the portal and much has happened since then. Frankly things are just getting started. Today, we take a look at some the latest portal additions, storylines, and some intriguing options.

NO SLEEPING ON BRAZILE THIS TIME AROUND

Missouri forward Trevon Brazile hit the portal on March 22 and this time around, 247Sports is going to go all in on the 6-foot-9 forward from Springfield, Mo. We were intrigued by Brazile high school but with limited viewings had to be on the conservative side with his ranking (right outside the top-150). Now is the time to be aggressive.

He is as good as anybody to hit the portal thus far and an argument could be made that long term, he’s the best to hit so far.

Once Brazile hit the floor for Cuonzo Martin, it was obvious that he was improving rapidly and had a bright future. He’d grown to 6-foot-9, he had added some strength and it was apparent that he had freaky good potential as a defender and offensive upside. Averaging 6.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game say that he held his own as a freshman. SEC coaches who have faced him and some NBA scouts say that those numbers are just the tip of the iceberg.

Sources have told 247Sports that programs like Arkansas, Illinois and Kentucky are among those to inquire early and he’ll have many more checking in. He is no sure thing and still has a lot of developing to do, but it is obvious that he’s got a high ceiling and could develop into a big-time player.

LANDER ONE OF THE FIRST BIG NAMES TO HIT

It was exactly this day one year ago that we introduced our first top ranking of the transfers in the 2021 cycle. By then, players with major reputations who had been ranked in high school like Walker Kessler, Marcus Carr, Kellan Grady, Xavier Johnson, Tre Mitchell and Earl Timberlake had already entered the portal.

This year it hasn’t seen quite as much star power hitting the portal just yet as Utah Valley big man Fardaws Aimaq debuted in the top spot. But the expectation is that some more well-known players will be hitting soon.

In terms of ranking coming out of high school, the biggest entrant to the portal happened Wednesday night when Indiana’s Khristian Lander, who was a five-star prospect coming out of high school, entered for the second year in a row.

Last year, new coach Mike Woodson was able to talk Lander into sticking around. This time, he’s gone.

To be fair, his production has been pretty meager in comparison to his high school ranking. But he also graduated a year early and his first year of college was the Covid-19 year. His second year, he had a coach he didn’t initially expect to play for. That doesn’t mean Lander doesn’t have a lot of maturing to do. He does.

However, he still has speed, there is a natural scorer in him and 2021-22 should have been his freshman year. There isn’t a school list for Lander just yet, but it is too early to write him off and odds are he will have no shortage of programs who feel they can help him figure things out.

NOT IN THE PORTAL YET BUT….

Louisiana Tech big man Kenneth Lofton Jr. hasn’t entered the portal, at least not yet. But it seems to be a mere formality that the 6-foot-7 275 pounder who was first team All-Conference USA will end up doing so.

Consider this. Lofton has already announced that he will explore his NBA Draft options and his coach at Tech, Eric Konkol, just took the Tulsa job. On top of that, rumors have been flying for the past few months that he was likely to leave Tech after this season. Simply put, the signs are all there that he’ll eventually end up exploring transfer options.

If that happens, look for a major tussle to break out to land his services. The modern-day round mound of rebound averaged 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds this season after leading USA Basketball’s U19 team – a team that featured the likes of Chet Holmgren, Jabari Smith and Jaden Ivey – in scoring on their way to a gold medal last summer.

He’s a native of Texas and smart money says that he would end up in his home state if or when this all comes to pass.

SOME EARLY CHATTER

At this point, chatter about who could end up where has been kept to a relative minimum. Take Fardaws Aimaq, our top ranked player in the portal so far. He wants to get NBA feedback first so it will take a while for things to heat up.

Of our initial top 10 ranked transfers, the two who seem to be generating the most chatter are likely guard Joe Bamisile of George Washington and forward Jaylan Gainey of Brown.

An athletic guard who was a four-star prospect coming out of high school, Bamisile wants to hear out whoever ends up getting hired at George Washington. However, if he elects to go ahead and move on, Oklahoma looks to be emerging as a school to keep a close eye on for the high scoring guard.

The Ivy League’s Defensive Player of the Year, Gainey is an athletic lob finisher who plays with a lot of energy. He has had no shortage of big-time programs reaching out since he went into the portal but based off of the early chatter we have heard so far it sounds as if Florida State and Marquette may be a little bit ahead of the pack.

HIGHLIGHTING SOME RECENT ENTRIES

With as many as 70 or more players a day tossing their name into the portal, it is impossible to address each and every single one. However, over the past few days here are a few from different levels that stand out as intriguing, with the potential to generate a lot of attention.

Max Agbonkpolo, F, USC- A long and skilled forward, Agbonkpolo was ranked No. 65 overall in the class of 2019. As a junior he had his most productive season averaging 7.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. At 6-foot-9 he has good size, is a smooth athlete and still has a lot of upside with his ability to face the rim. Add in that he will have two years of eligibility if he elects to make use of his Covid year and he is really intriguing. Early intel is that he is likely to stay out West so we could be looking at a dude who ends up looking hard at Mountain West type programs.

Kalu Ezikpe, F, Old Dominion- A grad transfer, Ezikpe is a native of Georgia who is strong as a bull, pretty athletic and coming off of a year where he averaged 11.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Looking at the SEC, there have been so many coaching changes -- five of them -- that massive roster turnover is about to hit. Ezikpe isn’t likely to be a starter, but he could provide some valuable minutes and fill holes for a new coach trying to figure things out in their first year.

Erik Stevenson, G, South Carolina- A three-star prospect out of high school, the 6-foot-4 Stevenson is a strong two guard who has scored nearly 1200 points in his career. He hasn’t always been the most efficient player out there, but with 86 starts in 125 games under his belt, he’s plenty experienced. A native of Washington, he’s literally played all across the country and has the rare opportunity to play for a fourth school after stops at Wichita State and Washington before playing this last season for the Gamecocks.

Tyler Stevenson, F, Southern Miss- Bad teams need players to lead them in stats too and make no mistake, Southern Miss was bad this season. That being said, Stevenson could be a great story. A former walk-on, Stevenson led his team in scoring (14.6), rebounding (7.5) and minutes (32) per game. Coaches who played against him in conference feel he is pretty talented and he’s a very dangerous shot maker to 17 feet or so. Likely, he’d be best finding a mid-major program to migrate too, but he could provide some valuable bench minutes in the right situation at a higher level.

He may be the best I've seen so far at identifying guys who fit the role he needs on his next seasons team in terms of ability and competitiveness. I'd imagine that has a lot to do with his use of transfers back before the portal plus his time in the NBA.

I'm not sure that he fits into our system. But he's definitely a badass.

This guy came up when I searched Torvik for bigs who have solid rebounding metrics and block metrics (which would insinuate they are athletic). He has decent shooting numbers, too, and looks like an athletic dude.

Kalu Ezikpe (6'8 F/C, Old Dominion)
- 107.3 Offensive Rating
- 20.2 Defensive Rebound Rate (very good)
- 8.7 Offensive Rebound Rate (very good)
- 5.1 block rate (very good)
- 74.4% FT
- 52.4% 2PT (62% at the rim)
- 10.% 3PT (1/10)

I guess Oats and his coaches have to figure out if we will have more get in the portal. Even if they say that are not leaving, it doesnt prevent them from changing their mind though.

I don’t know how each and every school does it, but I do know that our staff gets a lot of intel on portal guys from HD Intelligence as far as past metrics, projected metrics and how they will mesh within our particular system.

Yea, I'm guessing it's similar to how Saban and Co. whittle down the initial list of high school football players. They get all the data, and there are certain criteria that each position has to have a kid fall into (height, wingspan, speed stuff, etc), and if they don't they are automatically moved out. Like Chad said, our guys have the general metrics that rubes like me look at on Torvik, but they then have advanced stuff that throws those numbers into a system that sees how they fit into our style of play and probably get some sort of grade/number on "fit".

Then you end up with a smaller pool that you examine on film, probably, to see if the eye test matches the numbers and if you like all the intangible stuff.

Yeah, I liked what I saw for the most part when I’ve seen him play. We do have a bit of a connection with him based on his time at IMG and the staff has to be as aware of him as anybody considering he’s in our league. Will be interesting to see if we make contact.

I’m not able to pull it up myself right now, but how does he compare as a Gary replacement? Not necessarily saying I want Gary gone or that he’s leaving, but I also wouldn’t be totally against an upgrade there if it made sense either.

Looks similar. Probably not quite as thick, but maybe a bit more athletic.
