Commitment breakdown: Brandon Miller chooses Alabama

Alabama continues to roll on the recruiting trail under Nate Oats. Today, five-star small forward Brandon Miller became the latest prospect to end his recruitment in favor of the Crimson Tide.

The Tennessee native trimmed his long list of scholarship offers down to Alabama, Kansas and Tennessee State before settling on the Crimson Tide. He also considered professional options such as the G-League Ignite as well as the NBL in Australia.

He joins Jaden Bradley, the No. 25 overall prospect in the 2022 Rivals150, in Alabama’s class. The Crimson Tide could potentially receive more good news later today as Noah Clowney will decide between Alabama, Indiana and Virginia Tech.

WHAT IS ALABAMA GETTING?:

Long, athletic and versatile forwards are all the rage in basketball these days. That’s exactly what Brandon Miller will bring to the table in Tuscaloosa. Look for him to potentially be used in a similar way to what Nate Oats did with reigning SEC Player of the Year Herb Jones the last couple years. You’ll likely see Miller with some ball handling duties, defending multiple positions, and becoming one of the top players in the conference.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE CRIMSON TIDE:

It’s just another example that Alabama’s success on the hardwood under Nate Oats isn’t slowing down any time soon. Locking up a second top 25 prospect in the early signing period with the possibility of adding a third commitment inside the top 50 later today is elite recruiting. The Crimson Tide also remain in the mix Jarace Walker and Rylan Griffen as well.

Five-star SF Brandon Miller commits to Alabama

Coming off a summer and fall visit, five-star small forward Brandon Miller has committed to Alabama over Kansas, Tennessee State, and the professional route. The Antioch (Tenn.) Cane Ridge product — a Crimson Tide legacy (his dad, Darrell, played football under Gene Stallings) — announced his decision on Monday afternoon on CBS Sports HQ. He’s the second commitment in Nate Oats and company’s class, both of which are five-stars.

“That I would get better and pursue my dreams there,” Miller said of the message from the Tide staff. “I think they’d use me as a stretch guard, kind of a mismatch.”

Tide assistant Bryan Hodgson led the charge, along with Nate Oats and the rest of the staff. Nick Saban also pitched in during his most recent visit in September, hosting the family in his office.

“It was probably one of the better visits. I went to the football and game and they were chanting my name. It was just a good experience.”

In the end it was both the relationship with the staff and the style of play that Alabama won out on.

“Really just the bond with the coaches,” he said of why UA “I feel like it’s a good bond.

“They move the ball, they shoot shots that I shoot, and they play with pace and speed.”

At 6-foot-8, 200 pounds, Miller is rated the No. 3 small forward and the No. 11 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The addition gives the Tide the No. 20 class in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings.

Yeah it was Jarace Walker. Branham noted it in his commitment write-up.

Five-star SF Brandon Miller commits to Alabama

Brandon Miller, the No. 11 overall prospect in the 2022 Composite Rankings, has committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide, he tells 247Sports.

"I will be playing college basketball with the University of Alabama," said Miller.

The 6-foot-8, 200-pound small forward out of Antioch (Tenn.) Cane Ridge committed to the Crimson Tide over his other finalists including Kansas, Tennessee State, the NBL and the G League Ignite.

"I just trust the coaches and my parents trust them to get me to the next level and to chase my dreams," he said of why he chose the Crimson Tide.

Nate Oats and his staff prioritized Miller early upon taking the job in Tuscaloosa and have done an excellent job of developing a strong relationship with the five-star recruit over the years.

"The main thing that really stood out to me is the bond with the head coach," Miller said of the coaching staff. "In recruiting, the head coach doesn't always get involved because I feel like they don't have enough time but that really stood out to me. Coach Oats was calling me and telling me about his family and his daughters playing volleyball so that was the main thing that stood out to me was the bond."

Miller is one of the more polished and advanced scorers in the country with tremendous size and athleticism but he says he will bring more than that to Tuscaloosa.

"I feel that I can bring energy and creativity around the players and I can guard everybody one-through-five," he said.

Miller said that Jaden Bradley began recruiting him to Alabama before he even made his own commitment to the Crimson Tide and with Miller on board, they have their eyes set on two more prospects.

"We are targeting Jarace Walker and Noah Clowney," he said. "It's not really a pitch but just trying to get closer with them and see what will make their mind."

Miller is Alabama's second commitment in the 2022 class joining fellow five-star prospect Jaden Bradley.

Brandon Miller, 2022 five-star, commits to Alabama

Brandon Miller, a 6-foot-7 small forward out of Antioch (Tenn.) Cane Ridge has committed to Alabama basketball for the class of 2022, he tells On3.

Miller joins five-star Jaden Bradley. Alabama is also targeting Noah Clowney, Rylan Griffen, Jarace Walker, Ty Rodgers, and Kimani Hamilton.

Miller ultimately chose the Crimson Tide over Kansas, Tennessee State, the NBL, and the NBA G-League. He also received offers from Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, amongst others.

Relationships key for Miller in decision

Miller says the biggest reason for committing to Alabama was the coaching staff. “The bond we’ve built from the jump and how confident I am with them and the feeling I got from them that they can make my dreams come true. I bond with all the coaches. They’re all kind of like older brothers. I called (Nate) Oats two nights ago and told him I’d be committing Monday and his face was unbelievable. I’ve heard that he hasn’t been sleeping because he was stressing because he didn’t think I was going to Bama. Coach Bryan Hodgson is the one recruiting me so he’s been here since the process started. Coach (Antoine) Pettway was recruiting Nick (Smith) at the time so I knew him through Nick. So we always kept close.”

Darrell Miller, Brandon’s father, played tight end at Alabama in the early 90s.

“I grew up watching Alabama football so I’ve always been an Alabama fan,” Miller said. “My dad is excited. He’s been with me since the jump. My whole family is excited.”

How does Miller see himself playing in Alabama’s system? “Their vision is me as a stretch, kind of big guard type. I see myself guarding all five positions and getting boards and trading shots for my teammates,” Miller said.

We’re now up to 20th in the 247 Team Rankings and will move up to 10th if Clowney commits later today.
