Yeah I mean you'd think our fans would have learned by now to never assume a guy will shoot well until he has made like 35-40 of the first 100 3s he attempts in an Alabama uniform. We could field an entire team of highly touted prep guards who couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat the second they arrived in Tuscaloosa.

In addition to this, here are the things you’d think I’d have definitively learned after a lifetime of watching Alabama basketball:

1) college basketball players do not always develop in a linear way. They do not automatically get 20% better every year until they graduate. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t.

2) roster projections in march/April/may are inherently worthless. Even more so now.

I frick this last one up every single year. Just a few months ago I was in this thread trying to figure out how we’d incorporate JQ, JD, Primo, Shack, and Ellis into a perimeter rotation that makes sense.

A few months before that I was worried about losing JQ and not really worried about Primo or Shack.

I’m sure there are other things that I could add to this list if I actually gave it some real thought.

The most important thing to remember though is that neither of those will apply next year - next year is the year that all of that stuff works out just fine.

Also I’m sort of convinced that Juwan Gary will get at least 20% better every year until he graduates.

Kofi Cockburn in the portal.

Man if we had a need at the 5 I would be wanting Oats all over him

Not to sound bitter but...I think Shack is gonna end up regretting this. Nobody else is gonna give him the green light and freedom that Oats did.

I think you're partially right. Nobody is gonna give him the freedom and green light... That is a contender. There's plenty of mid majors that would let him fire away.

If we get Marcus Carr then my expectations are back to where they were with Primo and Shack

The only thing that concerns me is his shooting efficiency. He scored a lot of points last year. But also missed a ton of shots.

It is really something how down the NBA is on traditional centers - especially ones that aren’t considered quick enough to switch defensively. There was a time when Cockburn would have been a super high pick.

I think he would be a take for almost any college program, regardless of style/fit.

Returning PPG:

It's official now. Oats gained a ton of respect those past year in the coaching world. Now he gets to prove he's not a flash in the pan. This is the year to cement himself as a badass coach.

Oats interview is starting now.

Interesting thing in the interview is that it was recorded yesterday, and Oats talks as if Shackelford is coming back. He is real positive about how Shackelford will benefit from the experience and get better this year. Says to me, Shack surprised him with that last minute jump into the portal. Still would not be surprised if Oats has been exploring replacement options before today.

that's a little misleading, looking at that you wouldn't think we are gonna be very good this year but in reality we should be.

Ellis is gonna take a huge step forward, he only averaged like 17 minutes a game last year.

JD and Nimari were 5 stars out of HS and have looked good in practice, Nimari has been exceeding everyones expectations in practice so far. Plus we have Gurley who averaged over 15 points a game last year. Not to mention Bediako and Tchikou who weren't playing last year.

Then there are players with a lot of potential like Miles, Gary, and Holt.

It will probably take some time to gel since we have a lot of new pieces but we have a chance to be a really good team, I am excited.

With a lineup of...

Quinerly
Davison
Burnett
Gurley
Bediako

That's 4 players who were top 35 recruits and a transfer who averaged over 15 ppg last year.

Eliis and Tchikou are good enough to start over a couple of those guys, make no mistake we are still loaded.

a year older jq with 30+ minutes will be a college god. it was pretty wild how productive he was last season in a mildly limited role.

Yeah I may be Gumping a bit here but I think JQ is a dark horse Naismith candidate next season. He really came into his own down the stretch last year and was dominant for long stretches of games against good teams.

Is it fair to say that at the end of the season last year our 3 best players were JQ, Gary, and Keon Ellis? Or am I Gumping too much?

I wouldn't argue against that. But I'm biased because I am a Gary and Ellis stan.

My guess to the starting lineup has drastically changed with some of the recent news. Before I had...

1. Davison
2. Shack
3. Ellis
4. Gary
5. Tchikou

If I had to bet right now, it would be...

1. Quinerly
2. Burnett
3. Ellis
4. Gurley
5. Bediako

With Davison playing starter minutes off the bench.

What changed: I think Tchikou gives us our highest ceiling but his body hates him. Him not being in the lineup takes Gary out of the lineup because of shooting concerns with a Bediako/Gary pairing. With Shack gone we need more offense in the starting lineup with Q starting and JD playing Q's previous role.

Biggest beneficiary of Shack and Primo's departure? Burnett. I was having a hard time seeing him get more than 10 mpg with both of those guys back. Now he's looking at 25+ a night.

no question. esp for a pg its hard to be so efficient when coming off the bench and playing less minutes. despite this jq still shot 48% fg and 43% from 3 (fts could be better) while still creating for others and drawing everyones attention. stats like that are hard to come by. a very worthy guy to take over the reins as the leader and put high praise on.

He was coming off of the bench, but he wasn't playing less minutes. He averaged the same amount of minutes coming off the bench as he did when he started. And that's including the stretch where Oats didn't trust him to play defense and his offense sputtered in SEC play. He was playing a lot more toward the end of the season and in the post-season too while still coming off the bench.
