Nate Oats gives his thoughts on new NIL compensation for athletes
Beginning today, collegiate student-athletes can now earn compensation for their name, image and likeness. Some of Alabama’s biggest potential benefactors of the new NCAA policies are on the men’s basketball team, as guards Jahvon Quinerly and JD Davison each have more than 350,000 Instagram followers and will lead the Crimson Tide backcourt in 2021-22.
Third-year head coach Nate Oats said he and his coaching staff have already discussed NIL guidelines with their current team, as well as some prospective players, and their parents.
“It’s exciting, it’s new,” Oats told the Crimson Tide Sports Network. “Anybody that says that they know how it’s gonna work is lying to you. We’ve gotta all kind of figure it out together. I think it’s a deal where, though, a kid like JD Davison from the state of Alabama, everybody knows who he is here. There’s people that probably wanna use him to represent their product. A kid like Jahvon Quinerly. You think about a kid like Herb Jones last year if this would have been available to him.
“... There’s no professional sports teams in the state of Alabama, so if you’re a member of the Crimson Tide, you’re pretty well known. We finished fifth in the country this year. I think it’s a really good way for guys to be able to make a little bit of extra money. I don’t think it’s gonna be like a get-rich-quick kind of deal, though. Still, the best way to make money on your name, image and likeness is make sure you’ve got a great name, make sure you’ve got high character, make sure you’re playing a high level of basketball.
“If you’ve got both of those going and a company finds that you can bring value to them by associating your name, image and likeness with their company then kids ought to be able to make some money off it. We’ll see where it takes itself from here.”
Alabama released its own set of guidelines earlier this week, which states compensation cannot be provided in exchange for athletic performance or attendance and opportunities must not conflict with academic or team-related activities. Compensation for athletes can, however, come in the form of money, goods or services, which prompted a question for Oats.
What sort of deals or partnerships would he have wanted as a DII player at Maranatha Baptist?
“I wasn’t that good,” Oats said. “But you think, “Be like Mike, maybe, “Be like Nate” with Gatorade or something. Maybe just get free product instead of having to buy it at the 7-Eleven after playing pickup on a hot, summer night. Maybe I’d just take free product instead of all the big money. Maybe Nike would give me some free shoes, I don’t know. There’s a little dairy spot in my hometown of Watertown, Wis., called Mullen’s Dairy, maybe Mullen’s would give me a free milkshake every night when I would come in, put some weight on. I was skinny back in college. I could have used some free milkshakes.”

I think deep in there hearts they know Bama just hired a coach who is A) better than pearl (although I will say he’s a good coach but shady as hell) and B) runs a system that is on steroids compared to Bruce’s, and attracts more recruits. They will take anything they can to convince themselves that last year was a one off season, when in reality, it was just a preview of the Nate Oats show.

Joshua Primo continues to be a guy who draft stock continues to rise. He seems to be this year's "unknown" in terms of where he will go in the draft, very much like Anfernee Simons in 2018. Several lottery teams have shown a considerable amount of interest in Primo.

Last season on Alabama Keon Ellis ranked…
#1 in Defensive Rating (89.4)
#1 in Effective FG % (.592%)
#1 in Total Scoring % (.619%)
#2 in Total Rebound % (11.7%)
#4 in Player Efficiency Rating (17.8)
All while averaging 17 minutes per game. He’s primed for a big season.

I’ve thought that Primo made a mistake, but maybe I am wrong. Would a second mediocre season have doomed him to an actual third or possibly fourth. Right now, he’s completely getting recognized for “potential” and youth. Maybe he made the right decision.

Speaking of Auburn fans, did this past season kill Gene?? Where is he
He'll probably make a comeback soon with Shackelford and Primo leaving. He'll tell us that we're going to be in the middle of the pack of the SEC but our window to being back on top will be a couple years from now because of _______ and _______. Rinse and repeat for the next year and each year after that.

Little college hoops note: I've texted with probably half a dozen high major assistants since Kofi Cockburn went into the transfer portal. Many, who recruit aggressively in the portal. Every single one believes Kofi will ultimately end up at Kentucky if he comes back to college

This is like his Bat Signal. He will show up any second now to point out that one time 4 years ago he offered some praise to Alabama basketball that wasn't as backhanded as a compliment can get.

For those asking: The deadline for players to enter the transfer portal and be eligible next season is midnight tonight. And players must provide written notification to their compliance office by that time, not necessarily be in the portal.

For example, Jaden Shackelford isn't officially in the transfer portal yet, but has already begun the process with compliance.

No violations for basketball.

Pretty sure he is wrong about that, no players have entered it today, I know Cockburn was announced today but I heard he entered it last night.
Idk though I have seen some checkmark guys post that last night was the deadline and some post that tonight is.

If Kentucky gets Cockburn, they are going to be absolutely loaded
Posted on 7/1/21 at 8:36 pm to Allthatfades
You think that, but you would have thought that last season. They should always be loaded

Expect Illinois to fall off the face of the earth next season. They also lost an assistant to Gonzaga ( a real up and coming coach who Illinois Chicago should've gave a look).
