Alabama Basketball Summer Practice Update
Nate Oats and his Alabama Crimson Tide team returned to the court this month for summer practice, beginning their 2020-‘21 SEC regular-season and tournament title defense.
Here’s what we’ve been hearing throughout the summer as the Tide kick off their 2021-‘22 campaign:
— Texas Tech Transfer CG Nimari Burnett has stood out early during his time in Tuscaloosa, starring on defense and behind the 3pt line. Not only that, the former McDonald’s All-American is in excellent shape.
— Five-Star PG JD Davison (Calhoun) is making his presence felt early, impressing in the open floor with his passing ability and slasher mentality— converting a number of flashy passes and showing off above the rim during the Tide’s open practice.
— Sophomore F Darius Miles is noticeably stronger and faster. After an up and down freshman season where Miles showed flashes of potential in limited playing time, the 6’6’ forward looks to take a 2nd year jump.
— Furman Grad-Transfer F Noah Gurley has been lights out early on, showing out behind the arc and on the glass. Additionally, Gurley has immediately taken on a leadership role inside the locker room. Look for the experienced forward to make an instant impact in Tuscaloosa.
— PG Jahvon Quinerly has been a steady factor, taking control of the Crimson Tide offense. After breakout RS Sophomore campaign, Quinerly looks to take an even bigger leap as a Junior.
— G Keon Ellis looks to make a big jump coming into his senior season, appearing to be a more complete player who, over the summer, has finally adjusted to the D-1 pace.
— Newcomer F Jusaun Holt (St. Frances) has impressed with a quick trigger offensively. While he may see limited action in year one, Holt could be a name to remember in the future.

Forget all the lineup talk. How are we going to divide the minutes up. There's a ton of talent, but only 40 minutes in a game. Even if Primo and Shack stay in the draft, it's still a stacked, 3+ deep in every position roster. It's kinda crazy that nobody nobody hit the transfer portal.
But with injuries being an inevitable part of the game, this kinda depth will be clutch.

If he can figure out what's happening on the defensive end, he could see a lot more time this season. His three point stroke was impressive last year and he's got good size and passing ability.

Wtf is this guy talking about? Keon was one of our best players down the stretch last year. He's been euro stepping his way through D1 since he showed up.

It's summer, so probably the nature of practices, life outside of basketball, school/social time commitments balanced against basketball. I took that to mean everything but our actual in game tempo.

If Primo does leave after 1 year, what will everyone’s thoughts be on him? I’ll hope he does well, but I won’t have any special feelings towards him like Sexton. He did well for us, but nothing crazy really sticks out that would leave a lasting legacy.
Sexton's 40 points in the 3 on 5 Minnesota game and the game winner 4 second finger roll to beat A&M and get us in the NCAA are all time classic moments in Bama basketball history. I just can't think of any classic Primo plays. Obviosly he is a great player, just likely not memorable for us.

Primo only scored more than 12 points 4 times, just once after January.
I love the guy for last season but if he leaves, he just wouldn't have made an impact some of the others did in his short stint.
I'm a fan though and hope he comes back. He has the chance to be great for UA before he moves to bigger things. Seems like a good guy.

I guess it is strictly potential but I didn’t see anyway after the season that he would be leaving based off his year . Not that he can’t develop but he just didn’t really take over any games

He's 6'6" with long arms, good athletic ability, and a nice looking outside shot. Also he's the youngest player in the draft and his birthday snuck in under the eligibility cutoff by like 3 weeks.
That's enough for a good NBA team to potentially say "let's take that guy now at 27th overall because he won't be there when we pick next summer".

I’m not gonna stress about Primos decision. Would love if he comes back but if he doesn’t itgives a guy like Darius Miles a bigger role and I love his potential and think he is more than capable.

These are some posts that JQ has liked the last few days on Twitter. I don't think he likes being discouraged from shooting midrange twos.

The mid range was always the soul of this game. It represented purity and mastery. You see it every year in the playoffs. The non hoop folks wanted to get involved in the game and analytics was the route. They created this illusion that it ain’t valuable. It is the law of hoop!

Look at alllll these mid- range shots that’s gonna win the game for someone. The same shot they’ve tried to convince y’all was bad. Only real hoopers will understand what I’m saying!

As much as Oats stresses getting the rim, a guy like JQ is going to be limited in certain situations because of his size. I guess the preference in his system is a kick out shot or reset, but if a guy like JQ can make the open 12 footer, I don’t mind seeing a few of them a game.
Hasn’t Oats addressed that a few times? I don’t remember his response, but it at least seems like it’s comes up once or twice?

He says they don't tell players not to take them, but basically just try to condition them to prioritize other shots with the way they practice. Basically anything between I think 5 feet and the 3pt line is only worth 1 point in practice scrimmages.

He said when JQ got here he was shooting a lot of mid range twos then he showed him his shooting percentage on it trying to get him not to do it, or something along those lines.
It would keep the defense more honest if we shot at least a few of them, now its in the other teams scouting report that we dont shoot them so when we drive they can commit 100% to guarding a layup and not having to worry about the guy pulling up. It's one reason why some of our layups look so ugly imo.
I think in most situations its better to drive and try to get a layup and maybe get fouled, but not 100% of the time.

I fully understand the analytics side of it and the thought process behind cutting down those attempts, but if a guy can make a few to keep a defense honest, I hate the idea of his forcing a contested layup instead. I’m guessing JQ wasn’t making enough of them if Oats sat him down and worked him out of it.

Pretty much my exact thoughts. I’m hoping with some more size throughout the roster and more talent all over the court that our finish % at the rim sees a significant increase this year. Off the top of my head, I don’t know if we were a terrible finishing team last year, but it certainly seemed like we attempted a lot of contested or wild shots after a drive. Hard to see that being as big of an issue with this years roster.

I don't think Nate has kept the players from shooting midrange shots, but has more-so emphasized the importance of threes and layups. It's funny how people are talking about these NBA stars being successful at the midrange shot as if they aren't the exception. None of the analytics guys will discourage Kevin Durant from taking midrange shots when they can look at his shot chart to see how effective it is. It's not about discouraging those shots from the greatest scorers in the game, but rather to focus the attention of everyone else on shooting threes and layups...
