Auburn rarely even tries very hard on in state kids. Dunning doesn't really seem like a great fit for us offensively. He's 6'5"-6'6" but not much of a shooter or ball handler. He's kind of a traditional 3 who does a lot of his scoring around the basket without creating the look himself, plus a lot of mid-range stuff. He's a good player, but a traditional 3 isn't really the kind of player Oats or Bruce is going to go after.

Auburn has jumped to the forefront of Zion Cruz’s recruitment.

Cruz, a five-star shooting guard and No. 19 overall player in the 2022 class, said Auburn is his leader following an official visit this weekend.

“Auburn is at the top,” Cruz said. “They are at the top of my list. I love the family feel at Auburn. It’s a big family and I’m really big on that.”

Cruz next will visit Oregon on June 13-14. He doesn’t have any other visits planned, but is looking at trips to both North Carolina and Alabama.

Cruz plans to make his commitment in the coming months.

“I want to make a commitment by the end of the summer,” Cruz said.

Rice strikes me as a more athletic version of Shack. They have very similar playing styles. Rice seems to be a little more sudden on his drives though.

Way-Too-Early College Basketball top 25 Part 2

quote:

4.) Alabama

Potential starting five:

PG: Jahvon Quinerly

SG: Jaden Shackelford

SF: Keon Ellis

PF: Noah Gurley (Furman)

C: Charles Bediako

Bench: Nimari Burnett (Texas Tech), J.D Davison, James Rojas, Alex Tchikou, Jusuan Holt

Departures: John Petty Jr (Pro), Jordan Bruner (Pro), Herbert Jones (Pro), Alex Reese (Pro), Joshua Primo (Pro, could return)

All Nate Oats does is win. Throughout his College Coaching career, he’s made four NCAA Tournaments in his six seasons, four at Buffalo, two at Alabama. This season will add another to the tally, but how far can the Tide go? They lose senior Herbert Jones, Alex Reese, John Petty & Jordan Bruner but return Jahvon Quinerly, Keon Ellis, Jaden Shackelford & still await the draft decision of Joshua Primo. The Tide will immediately impact Furman transfer Noah Gurley, Texas Tech transfer Nimari Burnett, who fit the play-style Coach Oats deploys to a tee. Five-star guard J.D. Davidson is also coming in paired with five-star center Charles Bediako. The SEC is no longer just a football conference, and Alabama could contend for a championship in basketball.

I can’t imagine any scenario in which JD doesn’t start

My biggest takeaway from day one at the Pangos All-American camp - Overtime Elite still needs to sign over a dozen players for it's program. They are here and they are deep. Just another reminder that a lot of top prep players won't be playing college basketball.

I saw where Indiana is taking a foreign tour this summer... TECHNICALLY, Alabama can do the same thing this summer, and I wish they would. Alabama basketball playing other teams in the summer? I’d lose my sh!t

JD will start. You don’t bring top 10 guys off the bench. Especially not at Bama

Id like to see JQ and JD starting with Shack coming off the bench for a spark.

But JQ was excellent coming off the bench last season.

Quinerly wasn't top 10 as a recruit but he was a 5*, and he came off the bench last year. Because that's what he was comfortable doing, and we had the depth to allow him to do it. He still played starter minutes and made starter contributions, which is what actually matters. We will have the depth to allow JD to do the same if he plays better coming off the bench.

Aside from Ellis (who was like the #3 JuCo recruit in the country), Rojas, and Gurley literally every player on our roster next year was a 4* or 5* as a recruit, so just stop with this nonsense. JD is an elite talent but he's going to have to earn his minutes just like everyone else.

I actually agree with him. And not because JD is #10. But I've seen his highlights against elite prospects, and the guy is an absolute baller. Game 1? No clue or concern about the starting lineup. But by SEC play, I'd be shocked if he wasn't starting.

And in all reality, who gives a damn about who is a starter. The real question, is who the closers are. In personally I'm in favor of limiting shacks minutes playing a PG position. He got better as the year went on, but struggled with shot selection, and having a plan when penetrating the defense.

That's not the point. Him being a 5* has no real bearing on what his role will be. His talent really doesn't even have any bearing on what his role will be. Not with the kind of top to bottom depth Oats has built. We have the roster for him to fill whatever role he is most comfortable in and benefits the team the most. If that's being a starter then great. If it's being the best 6th man in the country then great. Either way he's going to play a ton of minutes and make a big contribution. There's no sense in assigning a role to anyone on next season's team at this point though. It's going to be an insanely talented roster with all kinds of possible personnel combinations.

I wouldn't base it off the fact that JD is a top 10 recruit, but based off of what I've seen from the dude, I would be pretty shocked if he wasn't starting by the end of the year. The only other time I've felt this confident about a recruit was Sexton, and it has nothing to do with their ranking.

If I had to bet I'd put money on him being a starter before Christmas, but that's not really what I'm trying to argue for or against. My issue is with the idea that he needs to start because apparently the rest of the roster isn't any good or something. That's not really true though. We have a ton of talent and depth. He might be as good as Sexton was but he's not going to have to drag the rest of the team into the tournament seemingly against their will the way Sexton had to. Junior isn't averaging 15 minutes on this team.

I’ve said in this thread multiple times I dont think JD starts game 1 and people have downvoted the hell out of me. But who are you gonna bench to start him? The Guy who was our leading scorer last year or the guy who was one of the best players in the country at the end of the year?

This ain’t the Grant/Avery days....this team has talent. Just because a kid is a top 10 prospect doesn’t mean a guaranteed starting spot anymore

I am predicting he starts by SEC Play.
