Huh? Maybe check their size and wingspan again.
One was an all conference defensive center heading into last year and the other struggled to stay out of foul trouble often. (Granted, Cliff’s performance was a little disappointing last year).
And all your championship examples were prior to the NIL and transfer portal heydays. The top 5-8 teams in the country are acquiring more proven and potential talent than ever before. The “rich have gotten richer”

Sherrell says the oft quoted 6’10 height is wrong; it should be 7’0-7’1. Cliff was ~6’9”.
Sherrell had 3 games in the 31 game regular season with more than 2 fouls: 1 game with 4, 2 with 3. Of course he didn’t play many minutes. But for the entire year he had 46 fouls in 313 minutes, which is 1 per 6.8 minutes. Which means he would foul out after ~34 minutes.
OTOH, he had a terrible time in 2 of the 3 (1 was only a 2 min cameo) UK games. 8 fouls in 25 minutes. ~ a foul every 3 minutes.
Sherrell was a good defender in HS for whatever that is worth. He looked really good defensively in the one all-star game I saw. He does appear to be a bit heavy-footed. But I’m no talent evaluator.

You could see potential towards the end of the year. The one thing I noticed with Sherrell the most is he didn't really trust his length and that was probably youth more than anything. When an opposing center would pull him a few feet out from the basket and catch an entry pass, instead of bodying up on them and getting a forearm in their back, he would stretch his arms out and put his hands on their back to try and prepare himself to not let them get by. He's a big dude both in height, size and overall frame. Hopefully he will use that a little more defensively. Outstretched arms with hands on opponents back is pretty much going to be an easy foul call for the refs with the first move the opponent makes.

Yep...
This was Indiana and USC transfer portal hauls for the upcoming season. This was good enough to land them a 7th and 9th place finish in the transfer rankings. These aren't even considered top 5 finishes in the transfer portal rankings.

Sherrell has lost weight. He looked good in those practice clips. Was moving a lot more fluently. I expect him to have a big year. Possibly All SEC

you really shouldnt trust what those kind of sports sites list for anyones height, along with weight, position, strengths, weaknesses, so on. i can provide a link if you like but cliffs actual height was 6'9. i suppose its possible for sherrell to be 6'10 but he looked a little taller than that to me.
not that your point on the nil portal stuff is without validity but i would say floridas actually a good example of how theres still alot more to it than just buying championships. not that they didnt use the portal but the guys they got at the time were more just considered solid mid majors with some upside and chinyelu who as a freshman averaged 4.7 points a game at washington st. condon, haugh, and aberdeen were just 3 stars. much more nuance to it than just a guys a hype or what a teams willing to pay, just ask kansas, and thankfully i do believe bamas staff has alot better grasp on judging what we need than most.

This is certainly true, and why I think we will continue the streak of being a 6 seed or higher in every NCAAT that Oats has taken Bama to. Probably in the 3-5 range, with a surprise upside being a 2 seed and surprise disappointment being 7-10 seed.

I am certainly not an expert on measurements, but I hadn’t seen anything to suggest they were “several” inches apart (minimum 3 but several usually refers to 4-7). When they were playing against each other in practice videos, they didn’t look that far apart. A quick ask Grok had said Cliff was 6-11 with a 7-6 wingspan and Sherell was probably 7-0 to 7-1. It didn’t have data on Sherell’s wingspan, but projected it to be 7-2 to 7-4 (he doesn’t seem to have the arm length that Cliff had). I also don’t think Oats would have paid what he did to get Cliff if he was only 6-9 (although a crazy wingspan can make up for some height differences).
My main point was that there’s no way Oats is expecting a sophomore Sherell to be as good on defense as a senior Cliff (think 5th yr senior at that). Maybe Sherell gets there by Jr or Sr year (if he stays), but I’d be shocked if he’s there this coming season. He’s obviously already a better shooter, so clearly a better NBA prospect.

I’ll be real, Cliff was average defensively. I hope Sherrell is as good or better on that end.

He was disappointing for sure, because we expected an all-conference defender. But I’d still say he was somewhat above average.

He wasn’t even close last year, or he would have gotten a lot more playing time. He was clearly better offensively.

Yup, I’d say the key to this team is Sherrell toughening up a bit on the boards and getting a lot better on help defense.

quote:Sherrell is a good rebounder. He averaged 13.0 boards per 40 minutes, behind only Cliff at 13.6 and Mo at 14.8. We've just got to keep him healthy and out of foul trouble. I think TBB will help a lot here.

We went from 100s to 30s in defensive efficiency. Cliff did exactly what he was brought in to do defensively.
