Some of our defensive numbers....woof
3 signs that all point to a team that gets beat off the dribble
(1) Never force turnovers (chasing/helping to get in front of a guy instead of in front and forcing errors)
(2) Very high free throw rate to field goal attempts (foul while chasing, not in position)
(3) Very high opponent offensive rebound rate (chasing, helping, never in position to box out)
Not good, not good

Would have liked to have seen a Final Four+ team sneak on that list
Elite 8: 2
Sweet 16: 5
Second Round: 3
Always a chance to make a run, though. It is a really good basketball team when they put it all together. It will be a fun season. The West is talented as hell.

Not to be that guy, but like I said.
quote:
This is our biggest defensive issue. Our guards are over running and too tight on the ball handler. Our guards are actually forcing the drive and shouldn't.
It looks like we are trying to speed up the game from the defensive end but it's causing our break downs. Our speed needs to come from the defensive rebound, transition and quick ball movement.
quote:
Based on who's getting time on the court right now, we don't.
We have to be a lot smarter how we handle on ball defense. If we don't overplay the on ball defense, it might extend the defensive possession a few seconds but it will help with the blow bys and rebounding.
Oats has to adjust to the strengths and weaknesses of his guys and not force something that won't be successful. And he's got to let some athletic guys get a few minutes every game. You can mix in a Holt and KAH a couple of minutes here and there.

I'm just not sure we can beat 2-3 really good teams in a row unless we figure things out defensively. And my fear is that there really isn't anything to figure out - we just don't have the dudes for it.
Burnett getting hurt was a pretty huge deal, it turns out.

We need a Big that can step out and Knock Down 3s. Gurley was suppose to be thy guy but he is useless...now we have nobody to pull people away from the rim.

Yep - at some point we are going to have to re-consider what we do defensively based on our personnel. Either that or play guys you don't trust as much, like you said (KAH).
Losing Burnett was a disaster. He had a skillset we desperately needed.

Should we Zone? But Oats doesn’t like to do that.

I wouldn't mind it being in the bag of tricks, but I don't love trying to zone all the time. And I'm not sure this roster would even be great at that, either.
As DT said, I just think we have to adjust our man to man philosophy away from pushing pressure out to the timeline team and more of a man sag team. Pushing man to man pressure is awesome if you have the 1-5 athletes to do it and smartly help. It's a recipe for disaster if you can't stay in front and are bad at help decisions. And against certain teams, it turns them from bad offensive teams to offensive teams with hope because you open up opportunities they wouldn't have had otherwise.

We aren’t the same team from last year defensively, but we can do enough on defense to win games against good competition.
It does suck to have Burnett though. His size/length/athleticism could have been a huge boost to our on ball defense. He, Gary, and Ellis would have been a terror on a ball handler. As it stands, we’re missing the piece he was supposed to fill.

Opponents are now 86-27 (removing our games - Mem and Jax have lost 9 of those 27), 76.1 winning % with two non-con games to go.

The reason to go to a zone is to prevent layups and easy buckets. Our biggest issue isn't uncontested layups, it's second chance points which is supposed to be a bigger weakness of zones due to the difficulty of finding a man to box out.

Yea. It was a big blow for sure.
Like you said, I'm not sure zone would be the answer. It could make it worse. We just need better in front position in our man to man. Don't body up the dribbler.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow - I think this is the perfect opponent to get our groove back. Good enough to be taken very seriously, coming off of 2 really ugly performances, a good matchup for what we do well and what we struggle with.

Was the game tomorrow originally supposed to be on one of the ESPN networks and got bumped when CSU dropped out? Or was it always going to be a SECN+ game?
Posted on 12/20/21 at 10:03 am to SummerOfGeorge
Was always SECN+...but if it would have stayed us vs CSU I bet they would have moved it to TV
