Well, it wasn't an official loss in the record books. That's about all I've got.

KAH was awful and it felt like he played much more than one minute.

Honestly, after the last 10 years, that's a pretty big upside

I’m not sure that Gurley is very good on defense. JD looks lost a lot of the time, although with his athleticism the lightbulb could turn on quick. Bediako is up and down.

Gurley you'd expect him to pick it up by now. But he hasn't been horrible. Just not Gary, like we've gotten used to there. JD and Bediako being freshmen, I'd expect a few of these kinda nights, where they just look lost and give up plays.

Last year we could throw out Petty, Keon, Herb, Gary, and Bruner if we wanted to.

That’s, umm, pretty good on defense.

But we have a super high ceiling offensively, and we should have a really good season. No need to melt yet.

Yeah it’s basketball. Teams have off nights and an in-state opponent is going to be fired up for this.

Oakland may be tough.

Seems like every team we've played so far is going to do well in their respective conferences.

Maybe you’re right, but I don’t see it with USA. Did not think they were very good… I really feel like we dodged a bullet that would hurt us a LOT down the road. Very happy to get a win!

Gary being out hurts our defense. Him and Keon bring all the intensity and swagger on that end

I hope no one got me on video calling the South students in the upper deck F@ghost but damn they had an annoying group there.

I really think we just didn't come out ready to play today and South came out VERY ready to play. And, because of their style/makeup that very quickly led to a mucked up, defensive struggle that we couldn't just turn the switch on and jump into. I'm kind of surprised we ran it out to 10 and were able to kind of coast home the last 3 minutes. That felt like a "we were locked in a cage match" type game where you just hoped they didn't have some random dude catch fire for 90 seconds.

Terrible game, glad we won, should pretty clearly be a slap to the back of the head wake up call on how not to show up ever.

A really good team struggling early against a not great team on a random Tuesday isn't exactly unheard of. The good news is we survived it and it should serve as a wake up call before we hit the meat of our non-conference schedule. In reality, this may have been the best type of game for us to have before things heat up.

JQ had a so so game but JD just isn't being aggressive like he was in the exhibition game when JQ was out so I think he needs to flip them around to see if that will quick start him.

I don’t think Virginia is very good but Houston is beating the shite out of them

I do think their athletic length effected JD and JQ to an extent. It should have effected Shack but he'd drive to the rim 15 times a game if Tony Allen was guarding him. He just has no filter.

So IIRC we struggled out of the gate on defense last year, seemed to be an issue with a lot of new guys which resulted in a lack of communication and chemistry.

With that being said, I saw a lot of that tonight, and from the usual culprits like Miles and Gurley. Then JQ might as well have taken a breather on defense because he didn't contribute much. Oats apparently worked on defense a lot the past couple of days, I'm going to assume that's going to continue.

I was hoping for a stress free game tonight where we cover the spread. The team found a battle tonight and some times these kinds of games can be more rewarding and will pay more dividends later in the season.

Neither team got off to a great start, then South got hot shooting the ball, which gave them confidence and they turned that confidence into defensive intensity and we just didn't respond well to that. Credit to them. Credit to Oats as well for bringing in players and instilling a winning attitude in them. That's a game we'd have lost 9 times out of 10 under the previous 2 coaches.

JD can get to the rim whenever he wants and he only attempts 3 shots and has 2 points off a dunk.

Yea, I think Virginia might be pretty bad. And Houston is another example of a good team who had one of these games - they had to go to OT to beat Hofstra on opening night.
