You can always tell if a mid-major coach has Xs and Os chops just based on the stuff they run, and you know if a guy can run a program on his own merits based on which mid-major he's coming from. Oats checked both of those boxes without a doubt. Recruiting is always the big question since there's no apples to apples comparison to be made. Fortunately we hit a HR there. Oats is one of the best recruiters in the country.

Reading that back it sounds gayer than it did in my head. (Not that theres anything wrong with that.)

Walters is going to be store brand Miller as a freshman and hopefully Vanilla Miller as a sophomore.

I don't even think that's a very bold prediction. He's got literally every single thing you want to see from a big wing who can hit 3s and play some point-forward.

The more I've watched him, the more I wonder why he isn't a five-star. Before we landed him, I had only seen tape from 2 years prior and the improvement from then is insane for just a 2-year span (also probably a reason he didn't get the 5-star status). He went from looking unathletic and uncoordinated to both of those things being huge strengths at his size. I think he's about as close as you can get to a Brandon Miller archetype. It's funny because he actually comes in as a more highly touted deep-ball threat.

Having said all that, wishing for anything more than half of Miller's production at his efficiency is probably a bit of a stretch.

Here’s his scouting report

quote:

Kon Knueppel is arguably the best shooter in his class. One of the better shooters in the country, he demonstrates a stroke behind the arc that is by all means excellent. He has a generally good understanding of the game, plays within himself, and does not attempt to do things he is not capable of. The stationary spot-up jumper, the catch and shoot jumper, and jumpers running of of screens are a few types of the translatable shooting scenarios he has mastered. He brings a professional approach to the game and very high floor because of his shooting prowess.

I've been digging into more highlights of Grant Nelson and I'm a say this...

Grant Nelson has crazy potential!!

Nelson's skill level is off the charts and if he works on getting stronger, his perimeter shooting and defense there will be no doubt that he will go Top 5 next year.

His offensive game consist of pro hops, euro steps, crossovers, step backs, crab dribbles, and jab steps. He is a matchup nightmare in the post or on the perimeter.

He's a mixture of Kristaps Porzingis & Dirk Nowitzki!

Looks like he even uses the same barber (mom) that Korver used for most of his career.

Seriously though, I don't know what more we could do to appeal to this kid. Oats is from Wisconsin and there is no where in the country he could go where he will get the green light to shoot like he'd get here. It's a perfect fit for him.

That would be a dream. We would be heavy NC contenders if he's even close to that good (at the college level).

They have some similarities for sure but I don't think Van Horn could dribble like Nelson can.

Remember when Saban provided a snippet of the recruiting pitches he gives?

I would love to be a fly on the wall when Oats brought a kid into the film-room on a visit

Chris Ledlum, transfer from Harvard who had committed to Tennessee is reentering the portal again. I am glad, makes Tennessee weaker. I hope he doesnt go to Arkansas. He said he is willing to “walk on somewhere”. Hes looking for a big NIL deal I assume.

Yeah I just saw that. I hope he manages to walk on somewhere that is already full and the NCAA steps in and shuts it down. Otherwise you can say goodbye to scholarship limits. This is a much bigger deal than it appears on the surface.

And he has us losing in the Sweet 16. Apparently he's familiar with our curse.
