It's definitely a major set back. It may take years to recover the talent level (and depth) that we are losing. And it definitely makes DeBoer's job harder (winning).
It's Bama vs. CFB right now, and we don't have the money to outbid CFB

So why didn't Saban at least wait till the window was closed?

Not sure I am getting the question. The window opened because he retired.

A 30 day window to enter the portal opens if there is a coaching change. Doesn't matter when it happens unless it coincides with another window. It really doesn't matter when he retired. I guess he could have waited another week so that it would have been too late for anyone who did transfer to be able to enroll for spring.
The real issue is that there is no opportunity for us to backfill with guys who will be eligible for spring practice. The whole arrangement is absolutely insane.

The transfer window re-opened for 30 days when he retired... regardless of when he retired.

The 30 day window would have opened as soon as he retired, even if it was in March or something

Damn I am sure this happened, but I didn't realize if a coach gets fired or quits mid-season the 30 day window opens. This stuff is so wild.

I think part of the bidding by Georgia is that it’s stuck in Kirby’s throat that Saban out-recruited him and pulled Downs out of Georgia in the first place.
Posted on 1/17/24 at 10:08 am to MrPigskin
I do t think Georgia was going to get him out of high school regardless

Totally wild. The powers that be swung the pendulum way too far in the opposite direction when they made that rule.
Posted on 1/17/24 at 10:10 am to gumpinmizzou
It will swing back, and swing hard.
Posted on 1/17/24 at 10:11 am to Woody4daTide9
yeah, it was Ohio State that was the main competition, right?
Posted on 1/17/24 at 10:12 am to MrPigskin
Yes but Kirby will do anything to get him…
Did you see how far his tongue was down Caleb’s ear after we beat them

Didn't know that.
What a crappy rule that literally punishes the team who is already going to be dealing with adversity
Man, I was thinking they had some extension for some reason due to playoff appearance

Prolly no further down his ear than it was when Downs was at Mill Creek. It didn’t matter then. Prolly won’t now. We will see.
Gonna be a weird convo if Downs simply comes back here

Losing all this depth also changes the way you practice in the spring. shite sucks

I’m willing to pretend he never entered haha
