Another beautiful day at the Joe! Glad to see the team tough this one out. The team plays Southern Miss Tuesday (as does the softball team) and then opens SEC against Florida in Tuscaloosa this upcoming weekend. We’ll learn a lot this next week.

Crimson Tide Baseball Secures Sweep in Final Series Before SEC Play (SI)

Baseball Earns Series Sweep of Binghamton with 5-3 Win on Sunday

Alabama baseball earned a three-game sweep of Binghamton with a 5-3 win in Sunday's series finale. With the win, the Crimson Tide is now 12-5 on the season.

Alabama got out front early with three runs in the first and added two more in the sixth. Binghamton chipped away at the Tide lead with single tallies in the second and third frames to go with a late run in the seventh but could get no closer than 5-3, the eventual final.

The Tide bats were led by Zane Denton and Dominic Tamez who each posted a multi-hit effort. Denton homered as part of a 2-for-2 showing that included a team-high two RBI to go with one run and a pair of walks. Tamez led the offense with three hits, including a double, to go with one run scored.

Jacob McNairy (3-0) picked up the win with 2.2 innings of relief. The senior allowed one run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. He was followed by Dylan Ray, who picked up his second save thanks to 2.1 scoreless, hitless innings that featured a pair of walks and five strikeouts. The duo combined with starter Grayson Hitt, who punched out seven, to post a season-high 15 strikeouts. That total was the most in a single game by Tide pitchers since 2020.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon
"I'm really happy with our performance today; it's hard to sweep anybody. I was really pleased with the way that we came out hot and scored again in the first inning for the third time in three games – really proud of that. We gave some at-bats away there after that first inning for three or four innings, but we did some good things on the mound. We struck out 15, which is a season high for us. I wasn't excited about the free passes, but I'm proud of our guys for doing enough to get a sweep and excited to catch a breath for a day before we play a really good Southern Miss team on Tuesday."

This is the first year in a while where, heading into conference play, I have no clue where we stack against the rest of the SEC/ west.

Well, South Carolina took 2 of 3 from Texas who swept us.

Not feeling good to be honest.

Mudita: Alabama Baseball Players Find Joy in their Teammates' Successes (SI)

Heading into the 2022 season, the Crimson Tide found a new way to bring energy to the dugout: by focusing on each others' successes rather than individual performances.

“It’s SEC Week!” musings from the Joe:

The good: Coaching staff seems to have aced the transfer portal additions. Tommy Seidel, Hunter Furtado & Eric Foggo have filled some much-needed roles. JUCO additions have been excellent as well with McMillan locking down the Friday starting pitcher role and Tamez filling the role of catcher. The thinnest spot from last year (pitching) is one of the deepest this year. Starting this week the team goes to one midweek game which will offer even more pitching depth in the weekend rotation. Defense has been solid for the most part as well.

The opportunity for improvement: ‘offensive efficiency’ as Coach Bo likes to call it. Getting timely hits and leaving runners on base continue to be a problem. The Achilles heel of the baseball (and softball) team. Midweek losses to teams that should be easily handled. So near and yet so far in Austin…..

It’s still early. The season is long but it goes by quickly. Injuries are starting to build up and that’s always a concern. It seems to me that Coach Bo has shown continued improvement in putting back together a program that had been essentially burned to the ground. Rebuilding a baseball program in the SEC West has got to be one of the tallest orders there is. Lest we forget the scholarship obstacles in baseball (and especially in Alabama with no college scholarship program for residents), here’s the “Uneven” documentary from last year that includes Coach Bo and Greg Byrne LINK

Get back to Hoover and make another regional and I’ll consider this season a success.

TL;DR: don’t rob me of my joy prematurely

Alabama-Southern Miss Baseball Game Moved to Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT

The Alabama-Southern Miss baseball game scheduled for Tuesday, March 15, has been moved to Wednesday, March 16. The change was agreed upon by both teams due to unfavorable weather conditions forecast for Hattiesburg on Tuesday.

The teams will still stick with a 6 p.m. CT first pitch for Wednesday's matchup at Pete Taylor Park. It will be the 107th meeting between the two schools with Alabama owning a 74-32 advantage in the series, including a 26-17 mark in Hattiesburg.

(which is the same time as the Bama-FSU softball game)
