It was against an element of Sherman’s army. Outnumbered approx 4000 to 900, all 3500 of the Citadel student body kicked arse in a predawn raid.
Don’t sleep on the Citadel. They haven’t been this fired up since 1864.

They lost 61-3 to a Kelly Bryant led Clemson team last season.

The Citadel also fires the first shots on Ft Sumpter
“This engagement was historically significant because it was one of the rare occasions when United States Marines fought in combat during the Civil War, in addition the Confederate forces included the entire Corps of Cadets from the South Carolina Military Academy (now The Citadel) who comprised more than a third of the Rebel force; this battle is the only time when the entire student body of a U.S. college fought in combat.[1]”
Correction. The student body numbered 350 not 3500.

The Battle of New Market was fought on May 15, 1864, in Virginia during the Valley Campaigns of 1864 in the American Civil War. A makeshift Confederate army of 4,100 men, which included cadets from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), forced Union Major General Franz Sigel and his army out of the Shenandoah Valley. The cadets were integral to the Confederate victory at New Market
This included the cadet corps of VMI, which had an infantry battalion of 247 cadets commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Scott Shipp and a two-gun artillery section.

VMI is where Stonewall Jackson taught before the war. Of course, he is known as probably the greatest general of the confederacy.
He fell at Chancellorsville, a victim of friendly fire. It goes without saying the South lost the war the day he died, as Jackson was the greatest military genius of his day.
He is also famous for his last words...

Ole Miss had the University Greys where essentially every able bodied Male left school to form a company that fought throughout some of the biggest battles with the Army of Northern Virginia

Stephen Lang's portrayal of him in Gods and Generals was a bit over the top and heavy handed at times.
But he, and the script writer(s), nailed Jackson's eloquence and faith. Even if he overacted to deliver it.
