Good questions! I didn't see Mac's name in the weight gain/loss post on the first page of this thread, so did he really not gain any weight!?

One thing I'm definitely curious about is how many of our injured guys will play on A-day? I'm assuming Lewis, Allen, Diggs, and Wright will all sit out the game, but who knows. Lewis looked like he was getting close to playing during the CFP, and Allen was practicing a bit, but haven't really heard or seen anything on Diggs or Wright.

That opinion (i.e. Cobra's opinion on Tua) is not popular with everyone, but from what I saw from him late in the season he did appear to play with a kind of recklessness to him.

I did not see the NC coz they don't show it where I live (Rotterdam, the Netherlands). So I don't know why he threw the picks: was the O-line leaky? Was it the coverage? Was he hurt? Was it the playcalling? Or was it him?
From the games I did see I would say that there is plenty of room to grow and mature for Tua: playing with patience, control, vision. He's still like a brilliant kid, which is great most of the time, but you want him to grow into a brilliant vet. Like a DeShawn Watson with less interceptions: you want the defense to fear you, not dare you to throw deep balls in tight coverage. If Tua could learn to manage the game a bit more (without turning into Alex Smith) that would be great.
Just because you have the God-given ability to throw a TD on every possession (which Tua certainly have) doesn't mean that you have to try to throw a TD on every possession.

Re: Jones. Dunno if it had to do with weight or what. Kid just seemed nerveous as heck against LSU.
My memory fails me, but didn't Jake Coker also falter like that early and turn out fine later?

Seriously dude, you still haven't seen the NC game? you need pull it up on YouTube or have someone burn you a copy or buy the dvd of the game... (wouldnt spend a ton on it though, you may not like the outcome)..

the 2 interceptions ... 1st one he over threw it, and the next one was about the same. The OL was about as good as it was all year. The DB's seemed to be confusing him and his deciding on the call before the snap was just what CU was expecting and ready for. '

All in all, it was mostly a case of being outcoached by the CU brain trust.

If Tua has a really good season, (win the Heisman or not), I believe he will go. My concerns would be is there a good back up ready to step in his shoes??? Mac looked better than Jalen in the A-day game last year; but he was playing again the 2nd D. He had moments during the season last year, but, mostly he was there to just hand off. (Personally, hate that the 2nd guy doesnt get to play full tilt playbook and just be expected to hand off until the moment comes where he is needed to play lights out... and not really ready.)

This and the use of timeouts are my biggest pet peeves with Saban. Bring them in and let them play the same offense. Don't tie their hands behind their backs and then get mad at them when they come off the field because they didn't move the ball.

think you mean the "Non-Use" of timeouts. Sometimes think the staff believes that they can bank the TO's for future use and they forget that they expire at the end of each half.

Main reason Tua stunk it up in the NC game was Clemson and Venables was ready for him and had been studying him for months. He knew that Tua almost always predetermined his throw based on the defense’s alignment before the snap. So Venables just showed Tua a look pre-snap then rolled into different coverage when the play started. Confused the hell out of him and he was throwing it where he shouldn’t have because defenders were where he didn’t expect them to be.

I said this and got beat up for it but I was right. We were and are at a disadvantage with Clemson because of the schedules right now.

They knew mid season to win this thing they had to beat us. They also had little competition to deal with all the way up to the playoffs. While they rolled through cupcakes and Pitt in their championship game, we had Auburn in a rivalry game and UGA to deal with.

They get ND in a easy draw once they get in the playoffs and we get Oklahoma. No telling how much time that staff and team put in getting ready for us.

If you check their schedule once they get by the A&M game it's stat pad time for them all the way once again. Whoever they face will have been broken down and they'll pretty much have a 2 game season.

Brief interlude and quick review of Clemson 2019 Schedule

Spring and Fall camps will be focused on beating the SEC (aTm) with little prep for GT or other ACC teams (no competition again)

Thu Aug 29 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets - New Coach Geoff Collins and Staff (team of Wishbone players learning new scheme)

Sep 07 Texas A&M Aggies (Aggies at a disadvantage since they actually play a difficult schedule and will not be able to focus on CU for all of Fall camp)

Sep 08 – Begin Bowl Prep – Focus on ALABAMA

Sep 14 at Syracuse Orange - (close game because of Bama focus, but new starting Syracuse QB ??? (Eric Dungey is gone), but not sure they quite measure up; yes I know they beat CU 2 years ago, so did the Tide....)

Sep 21 UNC Charlotte 49ers Rest after close game at Cuse - UNC-C Sisters of the Poor finished 5-7 a year ago

Sep 28 at North Carolina Tar Heels - New Coach Mack Brown and Staff - UNC finished 2-9 in 2018 will they be better? Doubtful

Oct 12 Florida State Seminoles - (1 Scholarship QB - Blackman who was beaten out by Francois last year, so will the beat down be like last year's 59-10 game? FSU gets a lesser beating only if the 3rd/4th team plays for CU )

Oct 19 at Louisville Cardinals – New Coach Scott Satterfield from Appalachian State cant be yoked with the 2-10 2018 season; but what can he do with an inheritted dumpster fire

Oct 26 Boston College Eagles (another actual game but really, not so much, Lawrence will be humming by this time and CU may have taken a few days rest from Bowl Prep and reviewed a bit of BC film?)

Nov 02 Wofford College Terriers - another FCS team

Nov 09 at North Carolina State Wolfpack - more like WolfPuppyPack

Nov 16 Wake Forest Demon Deacons *last year 63-3 'nuff said

Nov 30 at South Carolina Gamecocks Boom still behind the 8 ball and CU Winning streak moves to 7 USCe was 7-6 last year but CU simply smoked Cocky

ACC Championship against ???? (another 2-3 loss divisional champ)

Return to Bama Prep

Should be finishing this series up soon... only thing left (I think) is DB's (Safeties/Corners - Money and Star)... and then Special Teams: Punters, Kickers, Kick Off; Long Snappers (Scott Meyer earned a Scholly last year but put himself on the Portal this year and the kid from Northridge HS (LS) PWO) and the returners.
Well, will wait a bit before going into a detailed analysis.

You shouldn't be. It's common knowledge. Only Rotterdam (NY) has internet.
And I will not pay 20 dollars to watch Bama lay a 44-16 egg. Nor will I watch the 'highlights' on youtube. I rather watch Ajax Amsterdam beat Real Madrid 4-1 for free and hear from you guys what happened in the NC!

Alabama Spring Position Preview: Cornerback, safety
Continuation of excerpts from Charlie Potter's 247 Series...
quote:

WHO’S COMING BACK?
CB: Trevon Diggs, Patrick Surtain II, Josh Jobe, Nigel Knott, Jalyn Armour-Davis
The Crimson Tide didn’t see the same type of attrition this offseason as last, so there will be a lot of familiar names going through drills this spring.Diggs should be nearing full health after he missed nine games with a foot injury. Armour-Davis is also coming off a knee injury. The former gives the group an experienced leader to play opposite a promising young starter in Surtain
S: Shyheim Carter, Xavier McKinney, Jared Mayden, Daniel Wright, Eddie Smith
I included Carter with the safeties because the now-senior spent a lot of time there during the open viewing periods of practice last year. He could be an option at safety in base formations, although he spent a lot of his time at Star in 2018. McKinney will quarterback the defense after a solid sophomore campaign, but the question will be who plays opposite him with Thompson set to play on Sundays. Alabama has options with Carter, Mayden, Wright and Smith this spring.
WHO’S COMING IN?
CB: Jeffery Carter S: No one
Alabama signed five defensive backs in the 2019 cycle, but only one of them is on campus as an early enrollee -- Carter. The Top100 cornerback from Mansfield, Texas, will get a head start on learning the playbook and defense this spring. In the summer, however, he will be joined by safeties Jordan Battle and DeMarcco Hellams and corners Brandon Turnage and Marcus Banks. It won’t be the case this spring, but with five young defensive backs, UA replenished its depth.

Charlie Potter's Spring Series (247)
quote:

WHO COULD STEP UP?
CB: Josh Jobe
S: Daniel Wright

Alabama can move players around to various positions this spring. Diggs and Surtain showed they can play corner and Star, Carter can play Star and safety, McKinney can play safety and Money and the list goes on. Mayden was the sixth defensive back in dime sets last season and could fill a more involved role this spring, but let’s say Nick Saban and company mix things up. Coming off shoulder surgery and a suspension in 2018, Wright showed promise as a freshman and could have an increased role this spring and offseason. Jobe is another talented youngster that actually saw invaluable reps in the national title game when Saivion Smith went down with an injury. The familiar names are there, but UA has others that could take that next step this spring.

Alabama intel on A)new staff member, B) Henry Ruggs, C)injured LB BEN DAVIS
By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com
quote:

Alabama is set to begin spring practice Friday.

Here’s some of what I’ve been hearing heading into the start of spring ball:

—A) Former Akron offensive coordinator A.J. Milwee is expected to join the Crimson Tide staff as an offensive analyst, sources told AL.com. A Boaz, Alabama native, Milwee was a reserve quarterback at Alabama in 2004 and later a three-year starter at North Alabama, where he broke several school records and was a two-time finalist for the Division II equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. The 33-year old Milwee started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at North Alabama in 2009, joined the Akron staff in 2012 and was then the team’s offensive coordinator from 2013 through last season.

—B)
If they didn’t know already, NFL teams are now well aware that Henry Ruggs is really, really fast. Alabama had its junior pro day Wednesday and I’ve heard that NFL scouts timed Ruggs, who had 11 touchdown catches for the Tide last season, in the 4.25 range in the 40-yard dash. To put that into perspective, the NFL scouting combine record for the 40-yard dash is 4.22 and the fastest time posted at this year’s combine was 4.30. There were other players that ran fast, too. Biletnikoff Award winner Jerry Jeudy, safety Jared Mayden and a couple others were timed in the 4.4s in the 40.

—C) Word is that Alabama reserve outside linebacker Ben Davis is expected to miss at least part of spring ball. The redshirt junior underwent two surgeries this offseason, one in January and one in February. (reason for weight gain?)

— Davis is one of four Tide outside linebackers who’s been working back from an injury/surgery. Terrell Lewis is still working back to 100 percent from his ACL injury last summer while Anfernee Jennings and Chris Allen both underwent minor knee procedures in February.

— One other thing to keep an eye on with the outside linebacker group: It sounds like redshirt freshman Cameron Latu may see some time at tight end during the spring.

Alabama Spring Position Preview: Special teams
Continual of the 247 Charlie Potter series

quote:

WHO’S COMING BACK?
PK Joseph Bulovas,
P Mike Bernier,
P Skyler DeLong,
LS Thomas Fletcher,
LS Scott Meyer,
PR Jaylen Waddle

Alabama has experienced players returning at placekicker (1), punter (2), long snapper (2) and punt returner (1) for the 2019 season. Bulovas and Bernier ended the year as the kickers after starting out on the bench, and they will try to retain their first-team spots this spring by holding off some of the young talent behind them. But more on that in a bit. Fletcher took over as the full-time long snapper last year as a sophomore after he and Meyer split the responsibilities in 2017. Meyer entered the NCAA transfer portal this offseason but is still listed on Alabama’s roster -- unlike others that entered the portal. He was also at the Iron Bowl trophy presentation Tuesday. So, I would expect to see him at Day 1 of spring practice. It’s also worth noting that the Tide will have its holder on field goals and extra points back from last season in quarterback Mac Jones.

...Specail Teams ...Continued...
quote:

WHO’S COMING IN?
PK Will Reichard
Reichard is one of 15 early enrollees for the Crimson Tide and will compete with Bulovas for the placekicking job this spring and summer. The Hoover, Al., native arrives on campus as the No. 1-ranked kicker in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, and if he can adapt quickly and kick with consistency, he has a good chance to challenge Bulovas for his spot.
WHO COULD STEP UP?
Alabama could really use all of its specialists to step up their game this spring. The Tide ranked dead last in the SEC in punting average (35.76) and extra points percentage (90.2) in 2018 and would very much like for that to not be the case in 2019. So, Bulovas, Bernier and DeLong all fit in this category, as does Reichard, who could be a real possibility at placekicker in the fall. Punt returner seems to be in good hands with Waddle. As for kickoff returner, players like Henry Ruggs III, Trevon Diggs and Brian Robinson have experience there and could fill the void left behind by Jacobs. This will be one of the lesser-discussed positions during the spring, and a big reason for that is teams’ deciding to fair-catch the ball on kickoffs regardless of where it lands. But UA showed as long as it still exists, kickoffs will be returned unless they’re deep in the end zone.
