Special treatment
One of the biggest points of interest Saturday will be special teams as Alabama has open competitions for both its kicker and punter positions. The Crimson Tide returns sophomore punter Skyler DeLong and redshirt sophomore kicker Joseph Bulovas and brings in freshman Will Reichard, who has the ability to handle both kicking and punting duties. Thursday, Saban revealed how he plans to approach the kicking game on Saturday.
"I think the goal is to make sure that we have a couple of guys punt,” Saban said. "And I think we want to make sure we have a couple of guys get opportunities to kick field goals. I’m not as concerned about what team they’re on. We’ve had it in the past where when we have an established player at those positions, he just does all the punting and all the kicking. That’s not how we’re going to handle it in this scrimmage. I think there’ll be two punters that punt and there’ll be at least two field goal kickers that get opportunities to kick.”
Last season, Alabama missed an SEC-worst nine extra-point attempts. The Crimson Tide was just as inept in the punting game where it ranked 128 of 130 NCAA Division I teams, averaging 35.76 yards per attempt.

LINK ]Saban readdresses draft thoughts in wake of Harrison rebuttal BamaOnLine By Charlie Potter
quote:
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Nick Saban and Ronnie Harrison made headlines last week, but the coach wants his former player to understand the real meaning behind his comments behind the podium.
Saban shared his thoughts on players leaving a year early for the NFL draft following Alabama’s second spring scrimmage this past weekend. And while he did not name Harrison, a former Crimson Tide safety, he used a player selected in the third round last year as an example.
“We have guys that have no draft grades, seventh-round grades, free-agent grades, fifth-round grades that are going out of the draft. And the person that loses in that is the player,” Saban said. “If you’re a third-round draft pick, and we had one here last year -- I’m not going to say any names -- goes and starts for his team, so he’s making third-round money, which is not that great.
“He’d be the first guy taken at his position this year, probably, and make $15-18 million more. So, the agent makes out, the club makes out, and now they’ve got a guy that’s going to play for that kind of money for three more years, aight.”
Harrison, however, was the only third-round draft pick for the Crimson Tide in 2018. Thus, the now-Jacksonville Jaguar safety didn’t appreciate his former heads coach’s statement, tweeting this out:
“Coaches get so Butt Hurt Now Days About a Kid Making a Decision to live out his dreams and Go Pro. Makes me think do you really care about the success of the kid or how well your program performs? #KeepMyNameOutYaMouth #Bama #Saban #GodGotIt”
The two statements made by Saban and Harrison have been discussed and debated on social media and sports talk shows all week long. But after Alabama’s Thursday practice, Saban had something else he wanted to say -- the actual meaning of his initial remarks that got lost when he used Harrison to make a point. He did this at the end of his press conference, unasked.
“I’d just like to make one statement to make sure everybody understands who we are and what we do,” Saban said. “Our whole goal in this program is to help people be more successful in life. So, we support every player in every decision they make, regardless of what it is."
“We want to help them with all their decisions to have the best opportunity to be successful and create the most value for themselves and their future. Once any player decides what he’s going to do in any part of our program in any way, we’re going to support him in every way that we can. That’s what we’ve always done. I think our players pretty much understand that".
“So, we have a lot of players that come back here a lot, they’re very proud of what they were able to accomplish while they were here at the university and they’re always welcomed back. That’s something that’s very important to us, and it’s very important to the program. So, thank you.”

LINK ]Chris Owens Leads At Center In Alabama Spring Football Practice BamaOnLine - By Kirk McNair
quote:Continued...
There’s a truism of football that the only time an offensive lineman is noticed is when he makes a mistake. One offensive lineman has more chances than others to be noticed. The center handles the ball on every play. He has other assignments, of course, such as blocking. And the one that no one can be aware of is making the right call for his cohorts on the offensive front so that they’ll make the correct blocks.
It’s a lot to ask.
The man who did it last year, Ross Pierschbacher, has moved on.

When Alabama performs for the public in the A-Day Game beginning at 1 p.m. CDT Saturday, the center for the Crimson team – the first team offense – will be Chris Owens, a 6-3, 310-pound fourth-year junior. Owens played in almost every game last year as a backup both at center and also at left tackle, and also played on special teams.
Following Alabama’s final practice on Thursday before Saturday’s Bryant-Denny Stadium exhibition Coach Nick Saban said, “Chris Owens has done a really good job there. He has done a really good job when he’s had to play there. Chris Owens has really shown a lot of leadership and really worked hard this spring.”
Saban also threw in another name for the center competition. He said true freshman Darrian Dalcort “looks like he’s a young guy that could be a good center somewhere down the road, at some point in time. We’ve got a lot of guys that can play the position, and I’m pleased with the progress they’ve made.”

The Tide coach said that he thinks Owens’s “teammates have a lot of confidence in him but we’re going to keep on trying to get those guys to play better and better and better as we go. I think we have enough good players in the offensive line. We’re just going to have to figure out what the best combination of guys will be for us next year.”
As has been pointed out, it’s not the easy answer of finding the best five offensive linemen. It’s finding the five who play best together.
The look of that “best five” to this point won’t be on display Saturday. Last year’s starter at every game at right tackle, Jedrick Wills, has been ruled out of the A-Day Game after having suffered a severe ankle sprain in last Saturday’s scrimmage. Saban pointed out that Wills did not have to have surgery, “just has a pretty good ankle sprain, so we’ll probably hold him out.”

In explaining the division of the team for the A-Day Game, Saban said, “We want these guys to have the experience of being able to play as much of a game-like situation as we possibly can.
“We have a couple of guys out on the offensive line, so we have to make shifts.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean that’s how the line is going to end up.”

Attendance very important tomorrow both for players and recruits
Most important coming out of game - no injuries and lots of game like playing time for new players
Relationship between Owens and Tua very important
TEs big question marks. If there was opportunity to add someone to team he would do it
Questions bout the open

Good interview.
Saban was asked about Tua’s refocus for this season, and importance of new center/Qb chemistry on and off field.
Touched on Te situation and gave compliment to Cam Latu. He also mentioned that opportunity to bring in a player came about it would be welcomed at Te.
Saban’s last question was if he was to mentor an up and coming coach (23 yr old Saban), would he recognize himself.

If Dale gets to play with the starters perhaps that would take us one step closer to striking another point off our off-season to do list: develop D-line depth and rotation.

It opens up more versatility with Mathis too, as he can play all along the line.
With all the smoke previous years on Mathis, not sure what Dale speeding by him is an indication of...
