It still would suck if LSU manages to get into the SECCG and somehow win the thing. we'd never hear the end of it.
It would be a joke but still.

A lot can happen. But 3 losses will be hard for any to justify, extra game or not.
But, yes, missing the CCG and getting a 5 v 12 match up at home would be ideal.

Who cares? With no divisions the SEC title loses some luster simply because you can get into the game looking like LSU has looked this year.

Is there any downside to just naming an outright champion with no title game? How would that affect the playoff?

Right, but if the purpose is to get as many teams in the playoffs then you are potentially eliminating a playoff team.
I’m not falling for this idea that just because you play in the SEC championship game you are automatically in.
If you are the lower ranked team with the most losses in that game there is a good chamce you don’t make the playoffs if you lose. A team that is 9 or lower in the ranking picks up a 3rd loss is probably out if there are several 1 or 2 loss teams behind you in the rankings.

I got to thinking today if you really and I mean really look at the teams left: Indiana plays OSU and probably loses, BYU may get a loss by the end. I honestly don’t think those teams could hang with us. Run QB power right at them for 4 quarters would break them. Indiana has a TE playing on the OL because of injuries.
We’ve played a really hard schedule and taken our lumps, defense is playing better, offense has seem to found a small identity. Line up and run the offense we used against LSU until someone stops it.

I think it would be fun for Bama to have to go to Bloomington for a 1st round game. I'd go to that. Not happening though.
