Question:

I'm not asking because it's a likely reality - just wondering, but...

Based on the rules and dates of enrollment for fall semester, is it possible for Hurts to try to win the job in the first few weeks of fall camp, and if not successful, transfer immediately so long as he never enrolled/attended classes?

Obviously, he wouldn't be immediately eligible at a P5 school. I was just wondering what the rules said about it.

Whatever you do, make sure he plays in at least 5 games...,

How? You can't hold a gun to his head and make him dress and take the field.

Tua should start, but Jalen should play some.

I hope Jalen sticks around, but wouldn’t blame him for leaving.

I think it won't go that far. Tua is the special, phenom type lots of us think he is. Mariota, Manziel, Watson are names comparable to what Tua is. This competition will be over before fall camp is over. Saban may play Hurts to keep him from transferring right away like Blake Barnett did but if he has confidence in Mac or the grad transfer I don't think he would ultimately worry about that.

In short, Tua needs the reps in the first few games that would go to Hurts. He already knows what he gets from Jalen so you give Tua the experience he needs early and let Hurts go free agent early. He then has two years to play somewhere else and we thank him for busting his arse for two years and wish him the best.

Obviously not going to happen, but I'd like to see Jalen reserved this year for the last 4 games, keep his redshirt, have packages the next year and then take over as a 5th year senior.

The whole time we'd have a great backup in case Tua goes down. We wouldn't have to play him, and I have no doubts that a 5th year Jalen could win us a championship.

Like you said, this is unlikely, but it's the ideal scenario for us, and probably for Jalen.

Jalen's best shot of making the NFL as a QB would be to stay at Alabama. With the way Tua plays, he might very well have to take over for an injury at some point.
He could get the starter job back as a 5th year senior after receiving top-notch coaching from Dan Enos for 3 years, lead a team to a NC victory, cement yourself as an Alabama legend, then enter the draft as a potential late round pick.

I’m so sick of these “let’s save Hurts for the last 4 games and we could use him in a few special packages” comments.

What do you thinks going to happen? He’s going to average 34 yds per half against the good teams last year, then all of a sudden he’s going to come in mid 2nd quarter this season with some “magical” package and lead the offense on a couple 75 yard drives against the Georgias, Clemson’s, Auburn’s? Get that sh-t outta here.

Tua should never come out unless it’s garbage time. And I’d give the garbage minutes to Mac since he’s actually going to be here for a few years.

That is to say, I would ask Jalen whether he wanted to continue to play as the back-up (with the possibility of some per-packaged non-garbage time plays)or whether he wanted to sit and try and preserve a redshirt so long as Tua doesn't get hurt.

As heartless as it sounds, you never do this. You never allow a player’s individual goals and aspirations to come before what’s good for the team. If Mac Jones is the better QB as the backup (which I personally think he is), you give him all the mop-up time you can to get him ready if Tua goes down. Jalen’s feelings are inconsequential. Sorry, the team comes first.

I'd play him in the 1st game, and assuming Tua looks better...I'd let Jalen make the call on whether he wants a role in each game (no RS), or whether he wants to save his last 3 games for late in the season while keeping his RS. It would be great to have a Jalen package we could bust out in the SECCG and the playoffs and Jalen could still keep his RS.

So I'd spread out his 4 games like this if he wants to RS:
1) Louisville
2) SECCG
3) Seminfinals
4) Championship

If we allow Hurts to redshirt so he has two years left of eligibility, I seriously doubt he sticks around for a month after graduation in lieu of settling into his new destination.
