QB- WWYD with Jalen re Redshirt Rule

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but if you were the coach, what would you do (assumes Tua is the clear favorite to start)?
The question is essentially premised on whether you want to help Jalen redshirt and transfer because that's what's best for him or whether you try and kill his redshirt by playing him 5 games.
I see a few options for Jalen:
1- play the first few games like theyve done in prior qb competitions, ultimately lose the job to Tua, and sit until you transfer after the season. The risk is playing in 3- 4 games early and Tua gets hurt and you have ever to come in and you lose the red shirt year.
2- Tua wins the job before the season and Jalen doesn't play at all to preserve the redshirt. Best scenario for the guy that carried your team for two years, but isn't the guy going forward. If Tua gets hurt week 2, he loses the redshirt, but oh well. Basically prevents Jalen from losing his redshirt playing meaningless snaps.
3- a Chris Leak/ Tim Tebow quarterback system. He loses the redshirt, but has a role. Either way, is he a guy that will stay 5 years, anyway?
4- Try and talk Jalen into playing another position.
Options one and two pit what's best for Bama v what's best for Jalen. Option 4 is probably a non-starter.
Any other options I didn't think of?

Whatever you do, make sure he plays in at least 5 games, so he can't transfer with 2 full years to play somewhere else.

I wouldn't purposely do this. If we think we need Jalen to contribute all year long, then he'll play. If something happens to Tua and he needs to play, we bring him in. If Tua wins the job and Jalen is still eligible for a redshirt, we try to let him have that so if he transfers it helps him out. No reason to undercut Jalen's career for our gain. He's given a lot to Alabama, and I don't think he'd stop us from winning a natty wherever he ended up.

IMO, if Jalen is dead set on playing QB, he is going to transfer - before, during, or after this season. If that's true, then I'd start Tua from game one and bring in Mac Jones for garbage time snaps, and save Hurts in case of late season/temporary injury to Tua. He'd have 4 games to fill in without losing his redshirt, and then transfer and play 2.
The only problem with this plan is that Mac Jones may end up being the better QB2, as I think he's a better passer than Hurts today. Having said that, Hurts is really an incredible runner and can make things difficult for an opposing D if used correctly.
Side note, if he really doesn't want to ever transfer, then play both QBs, with a 3rd down/red-zone package for Hurts.
If I'm Hurts and haven't developed enough as a passer throughout this year to be a definite NFL prospect, I change positions asap. But that's me.

Jalen could play a lot in 4 games spread out over the season to continue his development, redshirt and then grad transfer in January with 2 years of eligibility. Mac could play mop up in the other 8 games so he's ready if Tua gets injured. That's the best plan for all concerned parties, imo.

Assuming (which I think we all agree is highly likely) he either loses the job before the start of the season or within the first four games then I would do whatever Jalen wants if he's willing to stay and be the back-up for the remainder of the year (and playoffs). That is to say, I would ask Jalen whether he wanted to continue to play as the back-up (with the possibility of some per-packaged non-garbage time plays)or whether he wanted to sit and try and preserve a redshirt so long as Tua doesn't get hurt.

I'd play him in the 1st game, and assuming Tua looks better...I'd let Jalen make the call on whether he wants a role in each game (no RS), or whether he wants to save his last 3 games for late in the season while keeping his RS. It would be great to have a Jalen package we could bust out in the SECCG and the playoffs and Jalen could still keep his RS.
So I'd spread out his 4 games like this if he wants to RS:
1) Louisville
2) SECCG
3) Seminfinals
4) Championship

Ideally the staff convinces him he projects better as a receiver, tight end, linebacker, edge rusher, I mean, anything other than QB. That way he stays on the team, we don't lose a leader, and we don't have to play against him.
That is what you call a pipe dream.
The guy has done a lot for the program and I'd hate to see him lose a RS because Saban waited too long to make an easy decision or because he played a few meaningless snaps throughout the year. If it's me, I give the job to Tua going into week one and sit Jalen the rest of the year. Give him all the QB2 reps in practice. Give Mac Jones all the QB2 reps in the game and let him transfer at the end of the year.

I think this is the most likely outcome. He can finish his degree and then still have two years of eligibility

I can't and don't believe this QB competition will, should, or needs to continue past camp.

It probably won’t. By game 2-3 the writing will be on the wall and I think Jalen bails to keep his eligibility intact. Just dont see him burning a year to ride the pine behind Tua.

Saban said at media days when someone asked about the redshirt rule and Jalen that he would do what is best for the team.

No, you misunderstood me. I do not believe the QB battle will last past FALL CAMP, and fall camp ends at the beginning of the week of the Louisville game. I see no reason why Tua would have any trouble 'winning the team' or turning it over excessively enough to consider a 2nd option. This year, it's in the team's best interest to put the QB issue to bed as early as possible.

I'm appreciative enough of what Jalen has done here that if he isn't going to be the starter or at least have some significant role, I'd be fine with allowing him to redshirt and preserve two years of eligibility for him.

I think everyone agrees. That said, even with a RS he gets to play in 4 games. The real question is how how you use him and in which 4 games? We could just play him the first 4 games, I'm saying save his 4 games for the end of the season.

This is the only logical scenario if he chooses to redshirt. Could even be a significant advantage for us, too.

Yep, Jalen in a goal-line/short-yardage package ala Tebow 2006 when teams have only been preparing for Tua, could be pretty lethal in the post-season.

I suppose Hurts thinks he'll be the starting qb and he'll play till Saban makes Tua the starter. If they are still splitting time by the 4th game, which I seriously doubt, he'd have to make a decision to transfer or not.
Personally, I hope he transfers tomorrow but I don't expect him to transfer before the season.

Obviously not going to happen, but I'd like to see Jalen reserved this year for the last 4 games, keep his redshirt, have packages the next year and then take over as a 5th year senior.
The whole time we'd have a great backup in case Tua goes down. We wouldn't have to play him, and I have no doubts that a 5th year Jalen could win us a championship.
