I would love to see Ish or Timothy Smith get some playing time over Dale.

Love to see those freshman LB get some playing time too.

Can they be any worse then the starters?

I’m with you. Hey you never know, they probably got better coaching in high school last year and haven’t had long enough to have been completely polluted by Golding yet.

I fully disagree with the mush rush against Corral. He can run but he is a great passer. We should have been chasing him around.

Watching the Saints game right now; have not seen either team (nor any other NFL team for that matter) “mush rush” the quarterback. I know you can’t really compare, but these dudes go after the QB EVERY. SINGLE. PLAY. It’s so infuriating to watch our guys dancing around side to side, instead of going after the QB.

Makes me wonder if Saban does this out of fear of the linebackers being so far out of position every play that the QB will just slip and take off for 15-20 every time he drops back. I know that’s the idea behind it, but I just wonder how much that influences the decision to do this; if our linebackers were studs at playing in space, would we ditch the mush rush bullshite?

Our whole scheme seems pretty jacked up right now. Hopefully Saban can put aside his pride and make some pretty radical changes starting now.

The hell does it matter if they all out blitz every play ? Once we get three defenders in the backfield not a single one of them can manage to tackle the QB or RB.

It's maddening... its as if they have no idea how to take proper angles, tackle, or use the sideline as a defender

It's bad

Now that, I’ve got no clue. The defense plays with zero swagger. Zero intensity. Zero fire. Whatever you wanna call it, they don’t have it. Not an ounce of it. They are like zombies walking around out there,

Even if you’re getting whooped, if you care and have any pride, you at least show emotion. They mope around and just accept defeat. fricking ridiculous. There are so many players from past teams that would probably have had tried to literally kick some of the current players’s asses on Saturday night.

2-gap mush rush sux, imo. Better for DLs to stunt/rush through a gap for penetration and disruption of blocking assignments and plays behind los, w/ ILBs filling the other gaps. If a RB (or QB) cuts into a gap opened by a stunt he should be quickly greeted by an ILB. Those gaps also create blitz lanes for ILBs to shoot through. Charlie Strong has lots of 3-3-5 stunting expertise, that we should be utilizing, imo. Stunting is what MO did to defend our running game pretty well. 2-gap mush rushing mostly accomplishes keeping the DLs occupied in a stalemate with the OL -- very few QB pressures, sacks or TFLs by DL. Good strong OLs can lock onto mush-rushing DLs.

This is a perfect description of what’s wrong with our defense

This is due to the philosophy of reactionary defense instead of attacking defense.

Our defense never had more swagger and intensity than with Pruitt. It’s no coincidence that he was also our most aggressive DC. The reason I love an aggressive, attacking defense is because of the psychological effect it has on the players and the opponent when they’re getting knocked on their arse every play

I think I saw Baremore one time get excited. The defense should be angry the entire game. To your point, it’s making us look uninterested.

Didn’t Saban adopt the mush rush for QB’s like Newton and Manziel that will kill you if they get outside containment? We aren’t facing many QB’s that can run it that well so throw the damn mush rush in the trash. It ain’t working and it ain’t affecting the QB. Turn the DL loose and spy the QB if he’s mobile. There’s not many QB’s on our schedule that can outrun Moses, Harris, and Anderson.

2-gap mush rushing is a shitty scheme! Should be totally eliminated. DLs should always be attacking through OL gaps into the backfield.

This is kind of what I was getting at with my post about watching NFL teams go after the QB. None of these teams mush rush Newton, Lamar Jackson, etc. Now obviously these guys are much better at throwing the ball than the majority of QBs Alabama will face.

We always talk about our “NFL” like scheme on defense, but I have never seen an NFL defense rush the QB at half speed and dare him to throw. The new game has bred quarterbacks that can run and pass, and I think Saban’s ideology of contain contain contain is a little outdated. It might work against the guys that aren’t great passers, but that is becoming pretty rare in today’s game.
