I guess Nick didn't want to take a chance in losing the QB committed to Bama. This is a dangerous game at the QB spot. Most every team is in real danger if their starter goes down as we saw with A&M and then the big Hog QB got dinged and their backup isn't very good.

My thoughts are that neither has gotten enough in-game play time to decide which should be the starter should Young be unavailable. I don’t think Tyson has had more than one series in any game. Not much of a sample size there. I guess here is where I say that the coaches know best.

For reward, for it's what they want to do: play.

Should it be fair that you're the best at one position, worked the hardest, yet only allowed to play a couple of quarters a game?

Yes it should. That starter is going to play virtually every snap against Florida and Ole Miss, etc. That backup works his arse off just as hard and deserves to get some PT against a Southern Miss or a Mercer. A) It keeps them on the team and out of the portal. B) it builds depth if the starter goes down. C) there's no reason to risk a Bryce or a Will Anderson in a game where we can name the score and are up 35-0 in the 2nd quarter. D) there's virtually no down side now with the 4 game redshirt rule. Saban is the GOAT but if he has a blind spot, it's this refusal to substitute liberally against cream puffs. He could learn a thing or two from Coach Bryant in that regard.

Surprised we didn't take an experienced transfer portal QB when Taulia left.

If you were an experienced QB, would you want to join our QB room that has 3 blue chip prospects? Very few starting QBs transfer to become backups.

A few extra drives versus a Mercer or Southern Miss isn’t going to help them that much more.

You know who can benefit from any type of live game action? Backups because they hardly get any.

They’re going to play most quarters, if not all, of most games. It’s not about fairness. It’s doing what’s best for the team. Backups could use more practice. You rather if they have to come in for an injury, they have hardly any live game experience?

You may still disagree but look what they did with Tua in 2017. Saban himself said they gave Tua more playing time to prepare him to possibly come in and replace Hurts if need be. They wanted Tua to come out and run a regular offense, to make mistakes, and learn from them. So Saban understands the importance of giving backups playing time, and it paid off in 2017.

I've often made a couple of points about Bryant...

1. In 1979, Steadman Shealy led our only undefeated team between 1966 and 1992. It was his only year to start, yet he was a seasoned veteran coming into the year because Bryant played him in many games as a sophomore and junior while the game was still in doubt...not just in mop-up duty.

2. It was a second-string QB who scored the go-ahead TD against Notre Dame in the 4th quarter in the infamous 24-23 loss in the 1973 Sugar Bowl. And it wasn't because the starter, Gary Rutledge, was hurt or having a bad game.

If Greg McElroy had gone down in the 2009 national championship game, the next snap would have either been Star Jackson's first meaningful snap, or more likely, AJ McCarron's first snap period. Bryant didn't believe in having a QB's first meaningful snap being when a championship was on the line at the end of the season.

Minshew was headed our way but changed his mind at the last minute a few years ago. Had a big year where he transferred, was drafted, and is still in the NFL.

Also, I said experienced, not Heisman candidate.

Some people want a chance to play for it all.

Milroe feels like a faster Jalen Hurts.

Will he develop is the question.

If Bryce gets hurt, we’re depending on those guys. Paul is the obvious go-to and has a strong arm. Jalen’s sample size is too small to make a fair assessment but maybe has more upside.

Depends - is Bryce down for the season, or do we just need a qb to not majorly frick up until he comes back.
