Are the people in charge of the CDC, FDA, HHS just political hacks t

Traditionally, no they are not. Part of the Senate's role in advising and consenting to Presidential cabinet nominations is to vet their qualifications. Do presidents generally nominate people that are close to their ideology? Absolutely, but that doesn't necessarily make them hacks. They still are tasked with carrying out the administration's directives for that agency. Trump's nominee for CDC Director, Redfield, sailed through confirmation and was qualified.

That said, every president is likely guilty of nominating political hacks to certain posts.

For us to "get back to work," first we're going to need the availability of widespread testing and titer detection to determine who has developed immunity, and is therefore safe to return to work.

Well yes, of course all of that is true. I think any reasonable American understands that we aren't ready to lift the restrictions and get back to normal. To the contrary, Trump is going to ride this as far as it will take him (it really is for the best). He blew it off early but China lying their asses off is a big reason why. Since he saw that it was a bigger problem than they led the world to believe he has stepped up to the plate and been a great leader amid a crisis. He has the chance to win a lot of votes if we come out of this in good shape compared with the rest of the world.

Sorry for making this political but I promise you that I am not and have never been in the camp that doesn't believe these restrictions need to be in place and need to continue until it's safe for folks to go back to work. Now if they cancel football season all bets are off. Kidding. I would love to have this behind us in time for football but you would think that it will have to happen maybe by the start of summer for that to happen. All we can do is stay home except for when we really need something and be safe when we do go out. And pray. That's never a bad idea.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam issued a “stay at home” order on Monday afternoon

Many of the directives remain the same as earlier recommendations for residents to stay home, but the governor’s Monday order imposes penalties in certain instances.

The stay-at-home order begins March 30 and goes through June 10, unless Northam amends or rescinds it. If it does last the entire time, the 72-day order is the longest stay at home order of any state.

There goes my Sumter county prediction.
Strangely 5 of the remaining counties are all around Dothan area.

What is number of hospitalizations / ICU in Alabama?

That seems to be by far the most important numbers to watch since the entire logic of almost everything we are doing is to keep those numbers manageable.

As a former Dothanite, I can tell you that folks in that area don't travel. As a rule. Ever. It's kind of a social anomaly, as if people from Dothan believe leaving Dothan for some reason is a character flaw and a mortal sin. And so maybe the virus hasn't made it there in a strong capacity.

There's also a pretty decent chance they don't have much in the way of testing kits.

So far, hospitalizations have held steady at around 10%. I don't know how many are in ICU beds.

With all these governors trying to out-shutdown each other, it's only a matter of time until college football gets canceled.

No, it isn't. You're talking about August. We will not be shut down like this in August and still have a functional country.

I don’t think we’ll still be shut down by then but I don’t know if they or a lot of people will want tens of thousands of people to packed into one area.

Plus while August is the start date they still have to get together to do practices. They can’t just start the season right away. Teams and staff also probably have other preparations to make a month ahead.

I could very realistically see a shorter season that starts later in the year.

GREENVILLE, Ala. (WSFA) - Greenville is dealing with a recent spike in crime, and both the city’s mayor and police chief said the coronavirus pandemic is thought to be the cause.

Mayor Dexter McClendon said it began Thursday with a high-speed chase. There was then another chase on Friday, a home invasion on Saturday, and a shooting not far from the interstate on Sunday.

“That’s very unusual for Greenville," McClendon said. "We’re very proud to say we don’t have a lot of crime down here, but we do feel like that the virus is causing a lot of people to panic and do things and have more time on their hands, and we’re trying to do everything we can to take care of that.”
