What's discouraging is people getting tested just because they want to know, not because they're symptomatic.
It's flu season and now allergy season as well. You don't need to be tested if you have the sniffles.

Lowe's in Alabaster was fricking packed around 12:30.
I got gas at the Murphy's Express next door for $1.73 a gallon.

FDA Greenlights Accelerated COVID-19 Test: ‘Results Within Hours Rather Than Days’

quote:
The test we’re authorizing today will be able to provide Americans with results within hours, rather than days like the existing tests, and the company plans to roll it out by March 30, which is an incredibly rapid timeline for such an effort. With new tools like point-of-care diagnostics, we are moving into a new phase of testing, where tests will be much more easily accessible to Americans who need them.

I'll believe the "results in hours" claim when I see it. The test results may come back in hours, but if labs have copious amounts of tests to run, they aren't going to get the results back to people that quickly. The drive thru testing in Birmingham was supposed to have results in four hours. Then it was taking them a day, and then 3-5 days to get results back.

Another snippet from the article:
Sounds pretty good to me.
quote:
FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn, M.D. added that the organization has been working to “expedite” new diagnostic tools to aid in the fight against the coronavirus.
“Today marks an important step in expanding the availability of testing and, importantly, rapid results,” Hahn said. “Point-of-care testing means that results are delivered to patients in the patient care settings, like hospitals, urgent care centers and emergency rooms, instead of samples being sent to a laboratory. With today’s authorization, there is now an option for testing at the point of care, which enables patient access to more immediate results.”
Sounds pretty good to me.

If the point-of-care thing can happen, then results in a short period of time is more believable.

Also, I don't get why they're shutting down testing there just because UAB is opening up their testing site Monday (see my earlier post for that story). Seems like we will probably end up with less testing in the Birmingham metro than we had before.
I assume that the labs can only handle so much being sent. So maybe UAB is taking over the testing and control the process better in regards to who should be getting tested and limit any test from getting tainted.

Looking at the Alabama map, and seeing new counties getting their first cases added almost every day, let's predict which county will be the last to get a case.
I'll predict Sumter County.
I'll predict Sumter County.

I'll go with Choctaw. No interstates, only 13k people, no hospitals.

I’ll go with Wilcox County. Less than 12,000 people, and none of the major highways go through it.

I’ll go with Choctaw. I lived in Pennington for a summer working at the GP plant as an engineering intern. Longest summer of my life. That was 2003.

I get infuriated at the two extremes of idiots you get: the ones that get pissed off because they came to their beach house on 30A and their favorite restaurant is closed for dining in and they can't buy their all natural imported soy free macadamia milk creamer from Publix because the store has been wiped out. And they can't get a massage because the spa is closed. So they whine because their pampered life has been disrupted.
Then you have the people that are convinced anarchy and the Walking Dead are just days away so they buy anything and everything that isn't nailed down at the grocery store in quantities that would normally last them a lifetime. To hell with their fellow human being and especially to hell with granny who they push aside to get to that 20th pack of TP.
Both sets should be publicly flogged.
