only thing I don't want to see is musical chairs every drive during games.
I think that was as a result of absolute desperation and injuries last year.
We had way too much talent to be that bad, but functionally that was the worst run blocking line I've seen since Shula and was one of the worst groups statistically in all of P4 from that perspective even if they were actually pretty solid in pass pro once Carroll shifted to RT.
But to your point, we will have the least experienced OL of my lifetime next year so the longer they have to gel during camp the better chance we have to avoid major problems early in the season.

get that it gives more guys playing time and experience for later in the year, but how about just having the five best out there for the majority of snaps?
I think that’s what this is. They want to find 5 best regardless of position and play them. I think it’s smart to see if Carroll is our best option inside of you can get good play out of the transfer at Rt but lose inside play then not makes sense to play Carroll inside. I just want to see this offense not be so reliant on perfect qB play and run a balanced offense. Our OP was terrible at both last year at guard position but there was talent there. They just never came together regardless of which 5 they settled on.

I think the kid from state is a potentially good to great right tackle. He didn’t come here to go from starting at LT in Starkville to riding the pine in Tuscaloosa. Lloyd is probably more athletically gifted than him so no surprise he may go to the right side. Carroll is also probably the best guard option on the team if he isn’t playing tackle.

I haven’t seen this from CBS mentioned:
Alabama is adding to its defensive staff, hiring Trent Simpson from Oklahoma as an assistant defensive line coach.
Simpson spent the last four seasons at Oklahoma, including three as a defensive analyst.
He will work under defensive line coach Freddie Roach and defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, helping develop Alabama’s defensive front during spring practice.

He allowed 3 sacks and 25 pressures on the year with a 58.2 PFF grade (directional at best).
Proctor allowed 2 sacks and 22 pressures with a 86.1 overall PFF grade in 2025 (84.2 pass / 81.1 run).
Carroll had 4 sacks, 11 pressures and a 71PFF pass grade (#1 nationally among freshmen) and an 82.6 run blocking grade.
They ran a veer and shoot system with some overlap to ours, but the rest of their OL was a major problem (38 sacks, 3.9YPC vs 25 sacks for bama and 5.1YPC) so maybe he was impacted by that overall disfunction?
Do I think James can be a functional RT? Yes.
Do I think hes on par with Proctor? No.
Do I think he's actually better than Carroll at RT? Probably not.
Do I think hes better at RT than whoever was running at RG before Carroll shifted over is at RG? Yes.

Was watching a You Tube video from Landon Langwell on this guy (James). He thinks he's really solid and has some good technique. Has some concerns about a few bad habits he has but says overall, he could be solid for Bama with some cleaning up on his technique. Watching those clips from last year at MSU, the O line there was pretty bad.
I will say, with just a decent, not great but decent O line last year, Bama wins at least two more games, IMO. I may be wrong but I'm cautiously optimistic this O line can be at least decent, maybe even pretty good this Fall.
I also think better/more consistent blocking from everyone else (TEs, WRs and even RBs in pass protection) has got to be improved and I believe they'll be at least some better, maybe a lot better this Fall.

I admit that after watching them 2-3 times without any focus on him at the time I was pretty skeptical on this initially as anything but a depth or “in the mix” pickup like the kid from Texas because that OL cost them a few huge games.
But it’s not fair to blame him for that when his numbers were solid so I’ll hope for the best while remaining firmly in the “prove it” camp.
People forget they had Tennessee and Texas in OT and were neck and neck with UF as well but just got massacred on the OL and fell apart due to depth late.
But honestly I’m not that worried because as long as one of him/Lloyd/Haywood/Brooks can lock down a tackle spot the worst case scenario is we shift Carroll back outside and just have to figure out guard.
Will be able to tell how it goes based on what we see after the scrimmages so hopefully it all works out.

I would love to see the scrimmage because I think it will give us a good look at how much improved (hopefully) the blocking is. The fact CKD acknowledged just how bad the O line performance was and brought in a new O line coach is cause for hope.

They did everything I could’ve asked and I’m optimistic even if I’m realistic about what we should expect early.
