What's the chances of Shank playing over Cotton?

I get the impression that Cotton's spot on the depth chart is written in ink.

A younger player starting over a senior? Saban would never do that. I know that because I read this board.

How'd he get the name Shank?

One of his park league coaches gave it to him as a kid, has no clue why.

Alabama was back on the practice field Tuesday afternoon for its second practice of USC week. The Crimson Tide players and coaches practiced indoors and in full pads on a sunny, 93-degree afternoon.

Here are several tidbits from the media viewing portion of Alabama's Tuesday practice session in Tuscaloosa:

- Rashaan Evans appeared to be practicing with the outside linebackers during the two media viewing periods, which was his first day there this fall. Evans did appeared to be limited once again, watching most drills.

- Inside linebackers Joshua McMillon and true freshman Ben Davis wore scout-team Nos. 35 and 19, respectively, representing USC inside ‘backers Cameron Smith and Michael Hutchings.

- Despite wearing a black, no-contact jersey, freshman cornerback Nigel Knott (knee) was wearing a No. 8 jersey during the indoor practice session. USC cornerback Iman Marshall wears No. 8 for the Trojans.

- The quarterback line remained unchanged with Cooper Bateman and Blake Barnett leading the signal caller group through throws near the goal line. Jalen Hurts and David Cornwell made up the other quarterback line.

- The first-team offensive line was the same, too, with, from left to right, Cam Robinson, Lester Cotton, Bradley Bozeman, Ross Pierschbacher and true freshman Jonah Williams participating in run-blocking drills.

- What has appeared to be the Tide’s dime package looked similar to what we’ve seen in past practices. Marlon Humphrey and Anthony Averett at cornerback, Eddie Jackson and Hootie Jones at safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick at Star, Ronnie Harrison at Money and Reuben Foster at Mack. Shaun Hamilton was the other linebacker in the team’s nickel drills.

- NFL scouts from the Buffalo Bills and Carolina Panthers watched Tuesday’s practice from the sideline.

- Tuesday was the first time I’ve seen AJ Starr on the sideline. It was good to see him back out there.

*** What’s next: Alabama will return to practice Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. CT before head coach Nick Saban’s final press conference of the week before the Crimson Tide leaves for Arlington, Texas, on Friday, Sept. 2.

Damn this defense is going to be sick. As long as the offense puts together slow methodical drives, I'm confident Alabama can win every game. I know with the receivers Bama has this year, we want them to stretch the field, but I'm okay with them controlling T.O.P and slowing wearing the defense out. Similar to '08 when damn near all the teams Alabama played were fatigued in the second half.

I think SDH will be a big contributor this season.

That year and 09 out read unreal how many opposing team players went down. I don't mean that in a screw them way, but the physicality demonstrated just demoralized teams and took its toll on them.

I'm really surprised. I expected Ben Davis to make the 2 deep. Looks like Mack Wilson jumped him and Kieth Holcomb held him off (for now). I wonder if he'll redshirt.

I like seeing Evans working with the OLB's also. The more snams he can get the better. I know the backup OLB's will not be happy to see him stealing pass rush snaps, but it is what it is. He's the best athlete on the field and makes plays.

Still slightly surprised Mack Wilson is pushing for playing time more so than Ben Davis at this point.

Mack was seen as a guy who flashed all the tools, but wasn't as far along as a football players as Davis.

Haven't had a nice cry in a while. Talking about not being able to make friends hurts to hear.

Starr seems like a great guy.
