It was Dan Wolken.

Football practices are way safer now than they ever have been. Hell, they're alot safer now than when I was playing in the late 90's. Saban knew this and that's why he was looking to hire him several years ago.

After 7 years as Creative Director at Alabama Football, I’ve been let go. I have gotten to work with some amazing people, do some incredible work and I am thankful for every opportunity my family and I were afforded. Damn. I thought our Creative Dept had been killing it.

This really stinks for this family. Happen to know them a bit, and they are really great people. Just part of any coaching change I know, but sad for those behind the scenes people affected.

Nothing about the practice was abnormal, the report even stated that. The death was down to multiple issues;

1. Durkin asked for more medical staff, saying he didn't have enough qualified people. The Maryland AD then canned the longest tenured medical assistant and downsized the group

2. Mcnair showed up out of shape, had a routine heat stroke incident, and then the unqualified medical staff sat around for an hour before identifying the issue and phoning 911. Nothing about the practice was excessive or out of the norm for conditioning drills

3. The University security failed to direct the ambulance to the field and delayed its arrival. Which further exacerbated the issue

There's a reason Durkin has never been sued by McNairs family and why he was reinstated after the independent report. Nothing about the practice habits were cited as a cause, and the report actually cited him as being supportive. He asked for more mental health staff for his players (Maryland, again, jipped him), and had improved the S&C/injury tracking to where injuries dropped/rehab improved. Hell the AD that had just left testified that he had no concerns with Durkin.

I wouldn't argue it's a culture war, but the University Admin threw him under the bus then had it publicly thrown back in their face + had to settle a lawsuit with Durkin regarding his termination. You can read the report Here

I’m not familiar with all of this, but I texted my cousin who is an A&M booster and alum. Said he is a hell of a coach.

Thank you for this...it sure does seem like the University of Maryland tried to direct all the blame to him because they were being cheap when it came to player safety and good emergency procedures.

I should've educated myself more on this man.

Per Charlie Potter (pretty much the same as has been posted around here)

Three DC names; one picking up steam

Sources believe Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer recently spoke with Kane Wommack, Karl Scott and Austin Armstrong about UA’s defensive coordinator job. There is a chance he spoke with one other candidate, as well. Right now, we believe Wommack is trending.

Thank you for posting what I was too lazy to post. Durkin is a good coach and elite recruiter. I looked it up and he was pulling top 15 classes at Maryland. He's had no issue since he was wrongly fired by UM. He would be a great addition to this staff IMO.

That man is so close to the 20yr vest in state retirement pension that I gotta think the AD will find a role for him if DeBoer doesn't.

Lot of ink about the Durkin and the Maryland deal. The strength and trainer were the guys.

How many of you remember the death of Willie Ryles at Bama in 86 due to the same situation under Ray Perkins?
