Alabama to add second Mississippi State coach to staff (BamaOnLine)
("We've now confirmed FootballScoop's report.")
("We've now confirmed FootballScoop's report.")
quote:
Mississippi State defensive line coach Brian Baker has left the Bulldog football program and is expected to accept a role on Alabama’s on-field coaching staff barring an unforeseen occurrence, BOL has learned. FootballScoop.com was first to report the expected hire.
A native of Baltimore, Md., Baker has been with the Bulldogs since 2016. He is coming off his third season in Starkville, Miss., and first on Joe Moorhead’s staff. He mentored defensive linemen Jeffery Simmons and Montez Sweat, who were both All-SEC selections this past season. Sweat was second in the SEC in sacks (11.5) while Simmons was fourth in tackles for loss (17.0).
Prior to that, he spent the 1996-2014 seasons coaching for eight different NFL teams, working with either the defensive line or outside linebackers at the professional level. Baker coached eight Pro Bowlers during that span, including the likes of DeMarcus Ware and Julius Peppers. He was defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech in 1995.
It’s worth noting that first-year defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski is still a member of Alabama’s coaching staff, but with this news, that doesn’t look like it will be the case for the 2019-20 season.
The hire of Baker would give the Crimson Tide seven new assistant coaches this offseason, although expected hires of Steve Sarkisian, Kyle Flood, Sal Sunseri, Charles Kelly, Charles Huff and Holmon Wiggins have not yet been publically announced by Nick Saban or Alabama. Huff also coached Mississippi State in 2018, serving as running backs coach and run game coordinator.
Coordinators Mike Locksley (Maryland) and Tosh Lupoi (Cleveland Browns) and assistants Dan Enos (Miami), Josh Gattis (Mich.) and Brent Key (Georgia Tech) have landed jobs elsewhere.

Saban had upgraded this staff tremendously imo.

We'll see. The defensive staff have their work cutout for them in 2019. Hopefully the offense can score enough to get the defense up to speed. We really need some youngsters to step forward this spring and going forward. 33,99,89,32,15,2,5 are pretty good players but after them it's not clear who will be the starters.

Yeah the defense was young this past season too. And, for Saban to make these changes on the defensive side makes me think he saw something missing regarding coaching/development and he feels these new hires can provide that.
Are we finished with the changes on the defensive staff?

Unless you get your wish in regards to a different defensive playcaller and we dump Golding for a high level DC, we seem set.
Edit: Unless Scott bolts, but from my understanding is well regarded still by Saban, similar to Golding.

Some of those guys are convinced that Saban is going after Miss St coaches because he is scared and sees State as Bama's only threat

MSU is a pretty good program. Gave us a real tough game in 2017.

Bama vs Miss State.......83-17-3
Sources tell FootballScoop Mississippi State defensive line coach Brian Baker has accepted a role on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama.
What is the role we speak of? Is it possible that Karl will not be in the band?

Yeah, they were also the first team to come up with a solid plan to slow down Tua. Anything we can do to hurt that defense while improving our own sounds like a good deal to me.

Eta: I think on-field staff turnover and hiring is done, with Jones, Pannunzio and Kugliowski being off-field until they land another gig.

Before the end of the season, I thought Scott would be gone, but I agree with you, I believe he stays now
