I'd want my statue placed in front of the basketball arena. That way I know it will be the only one that will ever be placed over there

Can we get some pics that might go along with the Cobra statue? Trying to envision it.

FG, PAT, and Punting are a big part of special teams.

BamaInsider tweeted something that had Bo Davis' picture in it. Is he really a possibility to come back? That would be awesome if we lose Kool

Yes, but as I've written before, bulovas actually significantly improved on regular field goals. The weird shite with extra points seemed like a mental thing that sincerely, I'm not sure any coach could've fixed in season. He was pulling them so hard left and right and I think it was because he got so up in his head about what the last XP did whether it was good or not and overcorrected.
Punting actually was ok specifically because Banks did a kickass job with the coverage unit that meant the shorter punts were basically unreturnable for most teams.

I still think a few of the extra-point misses were due to the hold, not the kick. On at least two occasions it looked to me like Mac Jones placed the ball closer in to his body after not getting the snap cleanly.

As bad as it appeared that our punters were, Bama was 5th in the country at punt return defense...only 9 returned out of 41 total punts for 2.67 yards per return, and no TDs. Only 24 total yards. That's pretty darn good. Some teams gave up more than that on just one return.

Part of that is when you kick the ball short, the receiver just fair catches the ball. 37 yard punts get a lot a no returns. I thought some of the kicking game coaching was terrible. From running over our own punt return man- almost killed by his own teammate, to not having a single Alabama player go after an on sides kick in the playoff, to all the blocked kicks, to fair catching a kickoff from the 10 yard line, it seemed like a constant screw up.

Exactly. We ranked 114 in net punting because of short punts.

The opposite is true, you can outkick your coverage of course, but you can also kick so short that the returner can catch it in stride and get easy return yards. The punt coverage unit did a great job preventing that.

Also quite frankly Alabama fans want to turn on whoever is in charge of special teams because they are a scarred fan base, so of course you remember the bad shite and refuse to acknowledge the good work.

He won Football Scoop's special teams coach of the year for a reason. LINK

quote:

FootballScoop is proud to announce that Jeff Banks is the 2018 FootballScoop Special Teams Coordinator of the Year presented by AstroTurf as selected by prior winners.

It’s no secret that Nick Saban demands the best for his program, so when a special teams position opened on his staff, Saban hired one of the most highly-regarded special teams coordinators in the nation, and he immediately turned in best-in-class results. Thanks to their prolific offense, Alabama rarely punted this year. In fact, their 2.9 boots per game were the fourth fewest nationally. In 38 total punts, only eight were returned — for a grand total of 19 yards, a 2.38 yard average that was fifth best in FBS.

When opponents punted to the Tide, chances are Jaylen Waddle did damage. The true freshman ranked sixth nationally with a 15.1 yard average and one touchdown on his 15 punt returns.

Alabama also boasted a Top 25 kickoff return unit, averaging 23.5 yards with one touchdown on 21 total returns. The Tide were one of 17 teams to take a punt and a kickoff back for a touchdown this season.

Alabama’s special teams also made one of the biggest plays of the season, and one that doesn’t show up on stat sheets. The Tide punt return unit successfully snuffed out a fake punt attempt with three minutes to play in a tied SEC Championship. That play allowed the Tide’s offense to score the game-winning touchdown, handing Alabama its fifth SEC championship in seven seasons and sending the club to their fifth consecutive College Football Playoff.

A Washington State graduate, Banks was an All-Pac-10 punter with the Cougars, then moved to a graduate assistant position at his alma mater. Banks has been a special teams coordinator at the FBS level for 15 consecutive seasons now. He coordinated special teams and coached running backs at UTEP from 2004-12 and then, after a brief stint at Virginia, Banks the past five years as the special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Texas A&M. Banks is the second Crimson Tide assistant to win a FootballScoop Coach of the Year award in 2018. Mike Locksley was named the Offensive Coordinator of the Year on Monday.

It's hard for opposing teams to return punts when we shank it into the bleachers

Not knocking Banks bc I think he is a good coach and kids love him as a recruiter too. He didn’t have much to work with this year. It was beneficial to the opposition to just fair catch and get away from where our punts landed.

Other board says the coaches are set unless coach Kool moved on. Then Bo Davis might possibly be in play

Sark - OC
Huff - RB/WR
Flood - OL
Pannunzio - RB/WR
Banks - TE/ST

Golding - DC
Sunseri - OLB
Kelly - Safties
Scott - DB
Kuligowski - DL

That's 10

I really thought Pannunzio was moving to an off field role this season

What I read on another board was that Pannunzio is expected to take an NFL job. If/when that happens, Huff will coach RBs and they will hire a new WR coach. Also said Kool was told to look elsewhere and that the names to watch are Roach and Davis.

That is real disappointing if true considering Pannunzio will be having major knee surgery...
The NFL job thing would make sense though.

95 I dont agree with you about returning short punts. The return man concentrates on running fwd and catching the ball.
The 50 and 55 yard punts are when coaching comes into play. Those are hard to defend by the punt team. I dont blame the coach for the problems with the kickers, but all the other mistakes were just coaching problems. We almost lost to Oklahoma because not a single Ala player went after the on sides kick. We fair catch a kickoff off from the 10 yard line?? Our own man almost kills our punt returner. Saban standing on the sidelines with both hands up in the air, with what the frick is going on? This guy might have been God's gift to coaching at his last stop, but I have never seen as many problems as we had this year. Crazy stuff. And maybe its just because the head coach doesnt spend enough time on the kicking game. I dont know.
