Golding has more experience than Smart when he became Alabama’s DC in 2008. He’s as experienced as Pruitt or Lake at that stage.

Tucker’s experience as a DC was in the NFL. He didn’t become a collegiate DC until he followed Smart to Georgia.

I believe Tucker had been a Co-DC at Ohio State. I could be wrong. But, his resume was damn good when he came to Bama.

Golding isn't as experienced as Lake and Pruitt when it comes to big time football and coordinating a defense at that stage. UTSA ain't the big time.

The sport is exactly the same. Same rules and everything. The athletes are a bit different and the stakes are higher, but the game and calling it as a DC is exactly the same as at a smaller school.

Whether Golding is ready is something none of us know. But the fact that he was at UTSA 2 years ago means absolutely nothing.

The athletes are different, the weight training programs are different, and we know the opposing coaches are different. I'm not knocking UTSA or Golding but a guy coming from UTSA to Alabama as a DC is up for an adjustment coming to the SEC versus someone like Pruitt or Lake who earned their stripes in the SEC, ACC, and Pac 12 respectively.

I was right about Mel Tucker. This is from his wiki page "Tucker began his coaching career in 1997 as a graduate assistant for the Michigan State University Spartans under head coach Nick Saban.[5] In 1999, he served as a defensive backs coach for the Miami University Redhawks, and then in 2000 followed Saban to Louisiana State University to fill the same position with the LSU Tigers. In 2001, he became defensive backs coach for the Ohio State University Buckeyes under coach Jim Tressel, and in 2004 he was made co-defensive coordinator."

LINK

Mel Tucker's resume was stellar when he came to Alabama.

With the "facts coming to light" that Golding was calling D Plays in the latter part of the season, and with the way CU took the D apart/// wondering if the lack of experience in the bigger programs meant little or a lot?

This is why I believe Saban is surrounding Golding with veteran coaches including Charles Kelly who has DC experience in a major program. Maybe Saban felt Golding has more to work with regarding DC acumen that Tosh at this point. And, I say that because we all know Tosh is an elite recruiter. So, it has to be the coaching that won out over Tosh.

If Golding's play calling is getting our D shredded Charles Kelly will be the de facto DC before the season ends.

Is it a foregone conclusion that Golding is the new DC or is there still a chance we are after someone else? I wish we would make a run at Shoop. His defense at State this year was tough. They definitely gave us the most trouble.

As I indicated in this post, it appears that Saban may have a couple of experienced DC candidates in the mix besides Lake. But promoting Golding to DC is also still an option. I suppose Saban has talked to Golding about the possibility of hiring a more experienced DC to help mentor Golding as Co-DC to be his successor. After all, it's pretty likely that an experienced DC hired by Saban would get hired away within a year or two for a college HC job or NFL job. I think Saban and Golding probably talked about those options when he was being pursued by Ole Miss and OU, since Golding opted to stay put. I think Golding decided he'd be content with either scenario.

I'm wondering if Saban has found his man and it will be kept quiet until after signing day out of respect to the coach and his current team.

I've also wondered if Saban has been talking with Bob Shoop.
