Was told by a guy that covers UT that Charles Kelly had been offered a job by Saban and is likely to accept.

BREAKING: Tide expected to hire coach away from SEC rival (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Nick Saban is expected to add Tennessee special teams and safeties coach Charles Kelly to his staff, BamaOnLine has learned.

Kelly recently turned down the Maryland defensive coordinator position under Mike Locksley to remain with the Volunteers. It’s not clear in what role Kelly will serve with the Crimson Tide, but he has a lengthy history on the defensive side of the ball.

Before arriving in Knoxville with Jeremy Pruitt ahead of the 2018 season, Kelly served as defensive coordinator / DB coach at Florida State from 2014-17. He coached linebackers and special teams during the Seminoles’ 2013 undefeated national title season as well.

Prior to his time in Tallahassee, Kelly spent several years at Georgia Tech in various roles, including special teams coach, defensive backs coach and interim defensive coordinator in 2012.

The Ozark, Ala. native, who played his college ball at Auburn, has coached first rounders like Jalen Ramsey and Derwin James along with many other NFL Draft picks. Kelly got his start in coaching in the state of Alabama in 1990 at Central High School in Tuscaloosa.

The news of Kelly’s expected hire comes after BamaOnLine reported on Friday that the Tide would be adding Florida defensive line coach Sal Sunseri and former Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood to its staff.

Stay tuned to BamaOnLine for more details on this breaking story.

Both Charles and Mickey Andrews from Ozark....good defensive coaches. Mickey was one of my assistants at Livingston in 68.

not really. lake hopes saban comes calling every year. an automatic pay raise. without ever leaving campus. or, if lake and the family want to vacay in t town a few days, then go home to a sizeable pay raise.

Nick got Charles and Sal for the price he would have paid for Lake (and still wouldn't have had OLB).

Now we will learn what the plan is for offense.

Butch RB/WR or off the field again since 10RC is paying him 200k per month.

Lance Taylor at RB/WR or a no go period
Miss State RB coach to Bama at RB
Joe P goes off the grass ...again
Coach K hits the road?
Bo Davis comes back to play in the Band

I liked both Sunseri’s when they were here before and hate how they left on not the best of terms. I’m glad they are coming back.

Potential 2019 staff -- various possibilities:

OC/QB - Sarkisian
RB - Huff, Pannunzio or Jones
WR - Taylor or Jones
TE/ST - Banks (see note on STs)
OL - Flood

DC - Lake, other* or Golding
DBs - Scott and Kelly, Golding or DC
ILB - Golding (CoDC or DC), Kelly or Roach
OLB - Kelly, Sunseri or Roach
DL - Kugliowski, Sunseri, Roach, Bates or Davis

* I've seent rumblings that Saban has two other experienced DC candidates.

STs could be split; e.g., Banks - Kicking STs, Kelley or Huff - Return STs.

Charles Huff bio - Miss St

TW: "Nothing has been ironed out with Jones... His situation is TBD."

Eta: I heard Pannunzio needs a major knee surgery. He and Jones may both be off-field.

I think Saban's first choice is a DC who is young and proven like Pruitt, Smart, Lake, Mel Tucker, and Aranda. Golding isn't as proven as the aforementioned guys so Saban is surrounding him with veteran coaches.
