We may have room for an extra defensive coach since last year we had an OC who wasn’t a position coach and that likely won’t be the case next year without sark on board.

According to Tim Watts we are very close to hiring Charles Kelly

Tim also said he doesn't think Jimmy Lake was a realistic option, it's unclear what Charles Kelly's position would be, and that Golding as DC, five offensive and five defensive staff appears to be the plan, but with Saban it's unpredictable.

Charles Kelly? Terrible defensive coordinator, average recruiter and position coach. I don't understand this hire.

That is weird because Hank basically said the opposite about Lake on some radio hit I found on twitter... Lake was a legit option, but maybe that has changed now that UW offered him 400k more than we have ever paid any assistant?

DO NOT want him as our DC. Hopefully it's another position.

Meh. Charles Kelly/Pete Golding = Kevin Steele/Kirby Smart.

Except Kevin Steele is a much better DC and position coach than Kelly.

Oh, no doubt. But Steele had never even coordinated a defense until he got to Alabama in 2007. And was demoted the next season.

I don't understand this hire is basically the refrain for all the hires we're making outside of Sunseri.

Charles Kelly's defensive acumen and DC style is aggressive, disruptive -- like Pruitt's -- variety of well-disguised, well-timed blitzes from anywhere, including DBs. Kelly coached DBs while Pruitt was DC/LB at FSU and Kelly took over as DC/LB at FSU when Pruitt left.

Eta: Per Tim Watts, it appears Kelly is being considered for a position coach, not for DC.

I watch Florida State a shite ton. My wife and both daughters are graduates. No one did less with more than Charles Kelly.

Jeremy Pruitt and Saban think highly of Kelly as a position coach and dc.

If he was terrible at coaching and recruiting then Saban wouldn’t be interesting nor would Pruitt. Think about it.

If Pruitt thought so highly why didn't he hire him as his defensive coordinator and let him call plays at Tennessee?

Is he at least a decent recruiter? Seems Saban is going with more technically experienced coaches, which is great; but we saw what happens when you have a whole staff that can coach but not recruit two years ago. Gotta have a good mix. Losing Tosh and Gattis is pretty brutal and unless we can add another ace to offset those losses it’s gonna show up in this next recruiting cycle again, I’m afraid.
