He did a damn good job with the DL. But yes, his recruiting seemed to be underwhelming.

Is former Bama player John Mitchell finally retiring?
Hate to see Dunbar go, but NFL is also his home...

Mitchell wanted to retire last year. But came back. I’m not sure what Pittsburgh is planning.

Alabama DL coach Karl Dunbar in talks to join Steelers in same role (SEC Country)
quote:
Alabama could be losing its defensive line coach to one of the NFL’s premier franchises seeking to hire him in the same role.
Karl Dunbar, who’s been with the Crimson Tide for the last two seasons, is reportedly speaking with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Manish Mehta, a columnist for the New York Daily News.
Dunbar, a native of Opelousas, La., played his college ball at LSU and was drafted by the Steelers in 1990.
Alabama hired Dunbar in May of 2016 to replace Bo Davis, who had resigned a month prior to that as a result of being investigated by the NCAA for potential impermissible contact with recruits.
Dunbar is a longtime NFL assistant, spending 11 of 12 years before his stint in Tuscaloosa as a defensive line coach in the NFL.
He coached the defensive line for the Buffalo Bills under head coach Rex Ryan. He also held the same position on Ryan’s staff with the New York Jets for three seasons preceding that.
Dunbar built his reputation with the Minnesota Vikings as the defensive line coach from 2006-11 after working as the Chicago Bears defensive line coach in 2004.
He also worked for his alma mater as LSU’s D-line coach in 2005 and the Tigers strength and conditioning coach in 2000-01.
Alabama’s Class of 2018 includes five defensive linemen, and all of them signed during the early signing period. All five are 4-star prospects or better, including 5-star DE Eyabi Anoma.

Mizzou's DL coach is from Alabama and has put out some decent lines for them.

He was basically demoted at clemson. Sharing DL duties with Lemanski Hall now. Not sure of his recruiting abilities just yet either.

let's not do this. let's not hire someone JUST because they played here. That got us Perkins, DuBose, and Shula (though the timing of Shula's hiring handicapped us, I'll admit).
Go get the best combination of DL coach/recruiter.

Loved Lemanski Hall when he played under Stallings.

Alabama DL coach Karl Dunbar leaving for NFL
quote:
Nick Saban will soon need to hire another new coach.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are hiring Crimson Tide defensive line coach Karl Dunbar as their defensive line coach, according to a source.
This gets Dunbar back to the NFL, where the 50-year old had been for most of his coaching career before heading to Alabama in 2016 as the replacement for Bo Davis.
It will be the fifth NFL team he's worked for after stints as the defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears (2004), Minnesota Vikings (2006-11), New York Jets (2012-14) and Buffalo Bills (2015).
For Alabama, it means more change among the coaching staff.
At least half of the Tide's 10-person staff will be coaches who weren't with last season's national championship-winning team.
Dunbar is the fourth coach to leave since the end of the year, along with defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt (Tennessee), offensive coordinator Brian Daboll (Buffalo Bills) and defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley (Oakland Raiders).
Whoever replaces Dunbar will be the fifth new coach Saban has hired since late December.
The Tide has already added Karl Scott as defensive backs coach, Josh Gattis as wide receivers coach, Dan Enos as quarterbacks coach and Pete Golding for the new 10th assistant spot.
Alabama is also expected to promote Tosh Lupoi to defensive coordinator, according to sources, after he spent last season as co-defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach.
Now, Bama needs to find a new defensive line coach.

HE PLAYED BALL AT BAMA, SO GIVE HIM A JOB.
THEN GIVE OUT SCHOLARSHIPS TO ALL PROSPECTS WHOSE DIDDIES PLAYED AT BAMA.
WE CANT FAIL WITH THIS PLAN!
BACK TO THE OLD DAYS!

I was unsatisfied with the LSU melt yesterday so I want us to offer the DL coaching position to Coach O. He can coach up the guys, great recruiter as a position coach, and the melt would be glorious.

Since he's fond of the "we comin'" line, sign the offer with, "You comin'?"
