It's got to be a recruiting move. I feel like all these hires right now are about recruiting. Saban can coach the coaches, especially on defense. Offensive coaching hires are a bit more concerning for me.

Not Alabama related, but Mike Golic just said on TV that Charlie Weis Jr is going to be Lane Kiffin's OC at FAU (did I miss Kendall Briles moving on?). Anyway, the interesting thing is that Weis is only 24 years old. Damn.
ETA - I guess it is sort of Alabama related since Weis Jr worked at UA as an analyst or GA or something a couple years ago.

Briles went to Houston as OC.

It's a Kiffin move, he remains the brains and Weis Jr is the yes man.

That's a good gig for a 24-year-old.

Definitely, he gets the rub working as the OC.
I like FAU taking all the GAs and making Bama a pseudo farm system.

And if they hire Scott, no doubt Saban is going in for the kill in Louisiana.

Yeah, and it's pretty smart from Kiffin's point of view. For all his "look at me" tweeting and TV appearances and trolling Saban, he knows the way Saban does it is the best way and he is surrounding himself with a lot of guys who know that way.

I was never a Lane fan and still am not. He is so close to putting it all together but is immature and loses focus.
I am a bit torn on Freeze because of his issues but I do think he is a good coach.

Gotta trust coach.

Recruiting thread post by Bama3714:

Sounds like Karl Scott, the La.-Laffayette DC (just hired as their DC... was DB coach at Texas Tech for a couple years), is going to come on as safeties coach for us. Already been a DC, DB coach, LB coach, and recruiting coordinator. Houston is his home, with deep TX and LA connections in recruiting. Comes very highly recommended by Golding (and obviously Napier).
It's pretty obvious we're going to be hitting MS, LA, TX, Ark (what little there is there), and AZ (with Banks) hard in recruiting in 2019 onward.

Joe Pannunzio moving off field per Aaron Suttles, as expected.

So Banks or Freeze coaching TEs then?

Alabama's presence in Georgia was always overstated, but it was still an important area. Probably being realistic with how tough it is there now. But Alabama will still grab some guys.

Alabama close to making another staff addition?
quote:
A coach who currently works for a former member of Alabama's staff may soon be working for the Crimson Tide.
Louisiana-Lafayette defensive coordinator Karl Scott has interviewed for Alabama's defensive backs coach and has emerged as a name to keep an eye on as a possibility for that job, AL.com has learned.
Scott has been at Louisiana-Lafayette since late December, working under former Alabama wide receivers coach and current ULL head coach Billy Napier.
Scott was Texas Tech's defensive backs coach the last two seasons after serving as Louisiana Tech's safeties coach in 2015.
He has ties to new Tide assistant Pete Golding, whom he worked with at both Tusculum and Southeastern Louisiana.

I would think Banks to maximize spots.
I wouldn't mind Freeze at WRs, if Locks takes over OC/QB. Apparently Sankey has to sign off on even giving him an assistant job.
I'd like to see someone just work with QBs, but spots may not be there...

The latest with Alabama, Hugh Freeze, and the coaching staff | Aaron Suttles | Jan 17, 2018
quote:
Last Monday, Alabama won a national title. Since that time it’s been fast-paced and a little hectic inside the Mal Moore Building, which houses the football offices. In other words, Nick Saban has not been content to bask in the afterglow of the title. It’s quite the opposite actually. Saban has been driven since that time, interviewing and meeting with coach after coach after coach as he remakes the Alabama coaching staff. Here is the latest.
Freeze attack
Earlier this week, I reported that former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze had been in at UA to meet with Saban. Saban respects Freeze’s offensive mind, and given the fact Ole Miss gave Alabama fits during Freeze’s tenure it’s easy to see why. So what would Freeze’s role be if Saban hired him? It’s a great question and one that, as of Tuesday morning, hadn’t been settled upon yet.
Saban is really pushing for Freeze to be an on-the-field coach, The Tuscaloosa News has learned. Others in the program don’t want that happening. How much autonomy Saban has in this particular situation is unknown given Freeze’s recent history with the NCAA. Another aspect to this is that should Alabama decided to hire Freeze as an on-the-field coach, it would likely need the blessing of SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. Sankey isn’t keen on that happening, The Tuscaloosa News has learned.
At the moment, Mike Locksley appears to be in good position to land the offensive coordinator job, but nothing is certain. Normally the offensive coordinator works with the quarterbacks. Locksley is currently the wide receivers coach. As you can see, there are lots of moving parts at the moment and that speaks to how much Saban wants to or is open to shaking up the staff.
Chris Weinke could be a candidate to coach wide receivers or quarterbacks should he get an on-the-field position. Freeze could do either, too, if he gets the nod. Freeze could also end up as an analyst, which is what most people are speculating as the most likely result. Again, right now things are moving quickly and nothing is decided.
More moves
Tight ends/special teams coach Joe Pannunzio will be moving to an off-the-field position, The Tuscaloosa News has learned. Pannunzio has been out on the recruiting trail this week, but I’m told this move is going to happen. Alabama has hired former Texas A&M coach Jeff Banks to be the special teams coach. Karl Scott, an assistant coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, has interviewed for a position on the defense. (AL.com was first to report this Tuesday morning). That hire is not official as of the moment, but it could be at some point during the day.
Shaking it up
As I previously reported, Saban wasn’t content to go into another season with the status quo. Recruiting is driving most of these decisions. Saban wants assistant coaches who will work hard to continue to bring the best talent in the country to Tuscaloosa. With recent SEC coaching changes, the competition for that talent is getting cutthroat. This is one of the most tumultuous offseasons I can remember during the Saban era in terms of the coaching staff. It’s moving fast and furious. And it’s not over yet.
