Not only were they a great college unit, but in terms of taking incoming recruiting rank and how they all ended up....hard to imagine a more "overachieving" group in Alabama history

- Allowed 10.7 PPG, 1st in the country
- Allowed 255 YPG, 2nd in the country
- Allowed 4.3 YPP, 7th in the country
- Allowed 13.5 First Downs per game, 1st in the country

* DeMeco Ryans - Defensive ROY, 2x Pro Bowl, 10 year NFL career, SF 49er Defensive Coordinator

* Roman Harper - 2x Pro Bowl, 11 year NFL career, 1st team All-SEC, SEC Network analyst

* Freddie Roach - 2nd team All SEC (2x), Alabama DL coach

* Wallace Gilberry - 9 year NFL career, 34.0 career sacks

* Mark Anderson - 7 year NFL career, 36.5 career sacks, 2006 all rookie team

* Anthony Madison - 6 year NFL career

* Charlie Peprah - Packers College Scout, 7 year NFL career, 2nd team All-SEC

And of course Joe Kines piecing it all together.

I was about ready to fight you as I initially read the word "overrated" instead of "overlooked," but yeah - I agree with you 100%. After Prothro went down in the Florida game, our offense became stagnant, and the defense basically won us the remainder of our games - sans Utah State.

I would have joined in to beat my arse if I'd said that

2004 defense was better IMO.

That core group of those 04&05 defenses were just outstanding. Especially considering that 04 didn’t have a QB and the offense was worthless in 05 after Prothro got hurt

I remember in 05 in Starkville the defense just said frick it we will score ourselves. I think big Rudi Griffin got him a TD in that game

That was an excellent group. I had absolutely no expectations of them being anywhere near that good before the season started. The Cotton Bowl was a lot of fun too. Top defense vs top offense and it ended 13-10 on a walk off knuckleball field goal.

My seats that day

Pretty sure I took these with an actual camera as my "cell phone camera" on my LG flip phone was the equivalent of closing both eyes and squinting

Keith Browns knee was down on that first play that went like 75 yards

And it wasn't even close

Pretty sure he did the exact same thing in Columbia against South Carolina earlier in the year too on a WR screen, didn't he? I don't remember as I was very intoxicated in the 104 degree heat 4 rows from the top of the upper deck that day . The only thing I really remember from that day is obnoxiously yelling VANILLA VICK over and over after Brodie's touchdown scamper.

Yeah he scored on that exact same play in that game. And Brodie scored the 1st TD of the game on like a 20 TD run.(People think Mac is a statue Brodie WAS A STATUE)

Keith Brown and DJ Hall really were a solid duo. I think I remember Keith dropping a lot of balls though.

Keith Brown had incredible straight line speed but he had some rock hands and was not much of a stop and cut guy.

DJ Hall was a great college receiver, he was just a pothead who needed 3-4 years of a regimented disciplined program like we have now instead of the more NFL style police yourself program we had with Shula.

That’s the game and that’s also the game JB Closner broke his ankle.

I just remember the Rudi Griffin play because it’s almost the exact same as Marcell Dareus and Reggie Grimes in the 99 SEC championship game

Which completely collapsed an already bad offensive line. It's a miracle that we competed as well as we did on offense against LSU because we couldn't block a soul.

Yep - another great call on the 99 Grimes play by Brad Nessler.

I've always wondered what he'd have become if Saban had got him as a freshman instead of a senior. Obviously not everyone responds well to discipline, but if he'd have stuck it out he was more than good enough to have a nice NFL career instead of an arena league cup of coffee and a felony arrest.

I mean..... 2005 was the most celebrated season in years until Nick arrived. I still remember it wonderfully.

I feel like Bama fans who were actually fans back then don't overlook this D.

The new-age fans that came with Saban don't really care IMO.

Also your OP needs to give Kines some love.

Rudi Griffin

People like this guy bc he is a good dude and scored that TD. But he is an example of one of Shula's problem.

Shula put Rudi Griffin starting over Anthony Bryant bc he didn't like Bryant. Anthony Bryant was 6'3 335 and could 360 dunk a basketball. He was prototype DT. He got drafted despite not being a starter bc of his potential, and he played a few seasons in the NFL.

But Shula just had his guys he liked bc of their character. Chris Capps and Marcus Carter being two others.
