Can we all just agree that we want it to be hurts? Bateman seems like a good guy, God bless him. But we all know that the missing piece from Bama being (nearly) unbeatable is a true dual threat superstar QB. We might have it in hurts and if we have it for 3 years.....

I can agree with that. If Coop can't stretch the field and he keeps turning it over I just don't see how him being in the program the longest gives him such an advantage over the other guys.

I disagree with this. A superstar QB of any ilk would make us damn near unbeatable. I just get worried with a dual guy we get away from our bedrock - the power run game. You give us a Dan Marino or Dan Fouts with our pro style, power oriented run game and it's Katie Bar the Door.

ETA:
not arguing. More like quibbling. A superstar DT guy would be as devastating. I'm just stating my personal preference.

SEC defensive lineman are a lot more athletic, a lot faster, than even 10 years ago, so a mobile quarterback is more advantageous than even a few years ago. Then, some rule changes are to the advantage of a dual threat type quarterback and spread offensive package. That and a power running game aren't mutually exclusive. We've seen Alabama using it the last couple of years.

But yeah. Any team could probably use a NFL hall of fame quarterback like Dan Fouts or Marino.

Didn't mean to downvote. Fat fingers + beer + phone.

I agree. I'd love a great pocket passer. I thought we were going to get that in Barnett. But, Hurts is going to be a force, if not this year, then eventually.

I don't think saban would ever abandon our base. Just see him incorporating option packages into our run game that can absolutely crush the defense.

I would have agreed with this almost 100% of the time. But my mindset is changing a bit. Athletes are more versatile and faster than they used to be. I still think with a mobile QB we can do the power game, but he will give us an option for teams that can counter with quickness. I don't expect him to be like Jackson at Clemson.. but a more versatile Blake Sims. And I thought Blake did one helluva outstanding job for us. I'm excited to see this kid play.

Well, we were talking superstar QBs, so I picked two of the QBs most identified as being pocket passers. Obviously, the equivalent of the DT style would be Vince or Cam.

As an aside, as a life long Dolphin fan, Dan was one of the most mobile QBs within the confines of the pocket. His ability to step up or sidestep while maintaining a throwing platform was uncanny.

Agree. Don't get me wrong. I'm Team Hurts in our present situation. I just don't want to get away from what makes Bama football Bama football.

I trust the coaches to make the best decision. I don't trust some internet "insider" named lucky. I'm pretty sure he said Gregg Marshall was a slam dunk.

Agree. Run the ball, stop the run and play damn good D. The key to Championships. One thing I love about Saban that he has in common with Bear that is overlooked. He adapts to the game. He makes adjustments to win against what is trending, same as Bryant. He isn't pigeonholed and blind and stubborn to the point he can't adjust to the fluidity of the game.

I think that a read option variable would make our power run game devastating. We already mash teams and they counter by stacking. Throw in some read option/spread attack and that same defense that relied on stacking the box must be honest across the point of attack with gap discipline. That keeps defenses from running downhill at us. Once a defense is thinking and not reacting to our offense the mashing begins anew. Add a qb that can do that and throw it to our receiving weapons.

If Bama wins a NC this year with a true freshman at QB we need to start a Death Pool of Rantards that will off themselves.

This isfrom a booster, that was in one of the groups that Saban spoke with after the scrimmage.

Interesting comment from Saban today: y'all don't realize how much the RPO has changed the game. We had some success with it today. 2 2

Sounds like Saban is adjusting the offense to keep up with the times. From everything we've heard, sounds like Hurts is the best fit for these types of changes.

RPO is the run/pass option.

I was with that group and he also said this " if lane had his way we would start the young guy, he has way more upside". He caught himself and changed the subject. Was quite telling.
