Bowl-cut

ATLANTA — In the transition period between when Kirby Smart served as Alabama’s defensive coordinator and simultaneously as Georgia’s head coach in the winter of 2015, things got weird and feelings got hurt between Smart and the Crimson Tide program he served for nine years.

The Tuscaloosa News learned that on his way out the door, Smart took a picture of Alabama’s recruiting board, which hangs in the inner sanctum of the Alabama football building, and showed it to recruits who weren’t necessarily at the top of that board. His message was simple: Alabama doesn’t want you as much as it says it does.

Multiple people close to the Alabama program told The Tuscaloosa News that same story, but none wanted to go on record about it.

The recruiting business is notoriously cutthroat, and coaches do what they have to do to be successful in getting players to their respective campuses; but this instance of negative recruiting felt wrong to those at Alabama, and it left a bad taste in their mouths at the time as it pertains to Smart.

Earlier this week UA coach Nick Saban maintained that just because you compete against someone doesn’t mean you still can’t be friends with them. But the relationship between the two SEC coaches competing for a national championship Monday isn’t actually as rosy as some would paint it. That doesn’t mean the two are hostile to one another, but it also doesn’t mean they’re particularly close either.

Yeah ....just read that. That's just disrespectful in any way you look at it. So foul....Expected more out of Kirby than to negative recruit your former team using inside info like that

Kirby is a cut throat. I never forgot where he came from. Georgia people are all the same ... jealous.

It is what it is. It’s a dirty business. You don’t think Pruitt is doing something similar? It isn’t right, but 99.9% of coaches in America would do the same thing.

Pretty cheesy move if true.

Watching the presser with both coaches and was thinking it was pretty frosty.

I have a hard time believing that happened because if it did I doubt we’d be letting Pruitt coach because he’s in position to do the exact same thing. I would think we would have instituted a policy where the coordinator is escorted out of the facility as soon as they accept a job elsewhere. It may seem cold but it happens in the corporate world everyday.

Don’t think so. Someone lacks a moral compass. That was a firing offense you know. You think it’s ok to lift something from your employer’s office after you give notice ?

Hell no. This was a stab in the back and Kirby is where he belongs.

I’m not saying it’s not low-down and dirty.

I’m also not saying I wouldn’t do the exact same thing if I were in that position.

Hey Huddie, I read that mega thread on Tide Fans about “Will Tua play against Ga”. It seems like Earl is concerned about our problems recruiting recievers and backs right now. He attributes that to Hurts. And I was sort of surprised by the pro-Tua sentiment over there. Back when I posted there they pretty much squelched Tua talk.

But in that thread, they were pretty unflattering of Jalen’s performance v Clempson and I was a bit bummed out that some seemed to feel a spring transfer was a real possibility?

I still think a Saban was ready to yank Hurts last week. But it was the two interceptions put him in his shell and so he shelved the idea. Earl said that Tua was initially engaged in the meetings between Dabol and Hurts but became more and more detatched as the game went on... and stopped joining them.

I think, God forbid, if we struggle on offense, Saban will make a change. But I’m truely afraid it will have to be after a prolonged dry spell and we will have to be down more than 7. And that’s unfortunate. Tua will have maybe a quarter to come back from a 7+ point deficit.... best case... very best case.

Hurts did not perform well.We had only 81 total yards on 28 plays in the 2nd half with 5 first downs. The lone offensive TD was set up by the Payne INT and we had to only go 27 yards on that drive.

The ironic thing about it is, while we still have no balance, we’ve also lost a lot of what makes Jalen so special ... his legs. He’s reluctant to run it and the whole “eyes downfield” thing has taken away that weapon. He’s trying to be a pro style passer and answer the critics. And it’s made him worse.

I don’t see RPO. We ran one qb option play that worked to perfection. And then nothing.

Earl thinks Saban started obsessing on the whole RPO thing after the kick six debacle and the 3 yard violatoins which he tried to get rule changes on. That’s when he went after Jalen. Now he rethinking that whole offensive approach because he really hates RPO. And he’s trying to develop Jalen and it’s not working.

If we win a title, I’m at peace regardless, though it will hurt to see Tua leave. I still firmly believe we should have payed them both from mid season on. Saban screwed up. Now he is a terrible spot. And hurt feelings are a certainty. And, our recruiting on the offensive side of the ball is being affected.

All this because we just have to have A QUARTERBACK and can’t play two.

I hope he is prepared to be decisive enough to make the change tomorrow’s sooner rather than later (or too late). He shouldn’t have let the interceptions prevent him from playing Tua last week. I’m sure Tua is pretty much fed up at this point.

Pruitt grew up a BAMA fan, walked-on and played at BAMA, etc. He's not a scumbag like Kirby.

Yeah that was a low blow move by Kirby, but smart.

Like someone else said football and recruiting IS a cutthroat business.

And if you’re not playing low and willing to get dirty then you’re not trying. And probably not winning.

Let's not kid ourselves, people. As the joke goes, our reply to the jilted LSU fan is Saban may be an SOB, but he's our SOB. We shouldn't put on rose colored glasses and think Saban is some benevolent good ole boy to work for. The results speak for themselves and it's what we want, but it doesn't exactly win friends and influence people. The one thing I look forward to if Dabo succeeds Saban is a more likable person in the command seat. In the meantime, don't be shocked when people, especially former players and coaches, take shots, pull dirty tricks, and negative recruit against us. We reap what we sow.

Uh, he already did.

Do you not remember DeMarcus Walker?

Dabo stole a 5-star OT out of Ohio State country two weeks ago because he told the kid Urban was too old to be there his entire 4 years.

All that’s different from basically stealing material from our football offices.

Did he not poach DeMarcus Walker last time he departed Bama? Might not seem like a big deal, but it’s supposedley an unwritten rule that you don’t poach committed prospects from the school you’re leaving

Touche', Saint. Like I said, it's a dirty business. But you have to admit, on camera, Dabo is much more the Bobby Bowden, aw shucks, persona compared to Saban the curmudgeon.

Stop worrying about if Tua transfers. Someone else will come along.
