1st Half
216 yards
21 points

2nd Half
89 yards
3 points

We had 2 near perfect drives to start the game, drives that required us to slowly move down the field given the way State was playing. Those 2 drives gained 156 yards and netted 14 points. And the next 2 drives moved deep into State territory but stalled - 1 when we punted from the MSU 38 and the next where we fumbled at the MSU 26.

Then, we get a muffed punt at the State 27 and proceed to score a TD in 3 plays.

The 2nd half was a cluster. We all of a sudden couldn't pick up blitzes, Tua got whacked, Brown was out and the OL looked out of whack, Mac Jones came in and we basically just shut the thing down.

So while the 2nd half was bad, and weird, I think we also need to realize that
(a) State is a really good all around defnese
(b) We had a huge 1st half offensively, just not one that was overly explosive

Sweat, Simmons, Lewis, Abrams are all dogs.

I'd take Sweat/Simmons over Ferral/Wilkins all day long.

Kylin Hill is also badass. Sky is the limits for that kid. He is impressive.

They really are - they are NFL bodies and they play mean as fvck (and I mean that as a compliment).

Yea I was wondering where he had been the last month or so but then I read that he had been hurt, which makes more sense.

yea, he missed the TAMU game. That guy is the real deal though. Moorhead should feed him 12-15 times a game.

Also, there is a big group of folks shitting on Lester Cotton and saying that Clemson's DL is much better than MSU.

Sweat & Simmons will be first rounders.

Cotton did this to Wilkins last year. I've never seen a "1st Rounder" get dominated this bad in a game.

That was lester taking out a years worth of "bad grade" film sessions on his arse.

"Grade this motherfv@ker!"

Naw, but seriously, I went back to see what was going on with cotton Saturday, and sure enough that dude has some work to do. It's scary at times.

Was it technique or scheme (as in he missed his assignments) or was he just getting over-powered. Or all 3?

SummerofGeorge,

There are few things we have to consider for how the offense performed.
-Tua held onto the ball little too long resulting in sacks.
-OL didn't do very good job of making adjustments on the field.  It wasn't just Cotton that messed up. Pier, Leatherwood and others messed up.  On top of that, RBs didn't do very good job of picking up the blitzes.  Pick up the blitzes and Tua get the throws off.
-Playcalling by Locksley.  First half was not bad... and then we had weird second half of play calling. It was almost as if Locksley kinda panicked and wasn't sure what to do, so he was throwing stuff out there to see what would work. If he had just stick to the game plan and made adjustments to where we could've thrown screen passes, quick passes or rollout plays, we would've made MSU defense respect that and back off a little.

Honestly, we should've played much better.  We left 14-21 points on the field.  I don't think this is a concern for our offense right now because they are pretty good at fixing what was broken during the game.  I think it was a great lesson for the players on the team to face adversity of what went wrong and how to keep playing.  We need that experience against Auburn, Georgia and potentially Clemson in the playoff.

FYI, The last two games, we've seen team deploying same method to our receivers, making it hard for Tua to throw the ball down the field.  I expect Tua Eno, Gattis and Locksley to make adjustments  against The Citadel and Auburn.

I'm not an X's and O's guru by any means. Would you mind elaborating on what LSU and MSU DBs/secondary were doing?

I'm guessing hold the shite out of the WR every play and dare the officials to call it.

My memory isn't all the way there lol, but I believe they were deploying spilt safety or quarter half coverage... I can't remember.... but i do know that they played our receivers tight and played in quarter coverage at times. DL was blitzing to ensure Tua didnt have enough time to survey the field.

Yep - they definitely had split safeties most of the game and almost all of their blitzes were outside pressures. It makes sense, as their belief was that their interior linemen could clog the middle, pressure on the outside to take away easy pressure valves with swing passes and press our WRs. Basically, the only available spots were drag routes, and that is statistically Tua's least accurate area of the field, and usually his 3rd or 4th read. I think the best counter probably would have been quick hitters on slants and TE releases, but I'm sure they were disguising things that made that difficult.

It also really relied on their front, because if they don't form a brick wall we can run draws and QB runs for days against that. It was a good plan.

In the second half their defense did what we typically do to other offenses. They were just better than us for thirty minutes. It happens.

Well.. I watched 3rd quarter and 4th quarter again tonight, and I noticed something. The outside blitzes was working and we could've adjust to pick that up and Tua would've had more time. The running game, we didn't make adjustment as well. 3rd quarter is definitely on Locksley.. and little on Tua. 4th quarter, we finally made adjustment and we moved down the field with our running game. Defense for MSU is good, but we should've done better job of calling the game.

In the last 6 minutes of the game in 4th, All of sudden, we started running the ball well. MSU backed off.

I also think they probably wore down a little bit. They were on the field a LOT.

The only part that actually bothers me is the lack of adjustment by Locksley in the 2nd half. We need to clean that up.
