Also, meant to say that Kiffin getting the Houston job is the most likely scenario that causes him to leave early.

Herman's taking a ton of their staff to Texas with him. They've got a bowl game upcoming but even more importantly they've got to try and salvage a recruiting class. They don't have the UGA/SEC marquee to fall back on, so whomever they hire is going to have to hit the bricks hard on day 1.

I don't see either happening. Sark would be irrelevant and Tosh would have to leave all his great "toys" in Tuscaloosa.

scenario that would make me for days:

Bama wins SECCG, Kiffin leaves for LSU on Sunday, Kiffin then gets HC job at Houston or Cal later in December, LSU has to search again for an OC after LSU fans spent weeks boasting about "stealing" Bama's OC (who's options in 2017 appear to be LSU OC or unemployed at the moment)

Latest I'm hearing is Kiffin is LSU unless he gets a HC offer. I still hold the opinion he will leave after the season but still hear it could be Sunday. I'd bet on after personally.

Thanks Boz.

Sorry if I missed it but what are you hearing or what is the rationale behind Kiffin leaving this weekend? Are he and Saban really at that kinda point?

Isn't Kiffin under contract until the end of February? If he wants to go then fine. However, I would think his contract would preclude him from recruiting unless Nick gives him the release? Not sure how they handled it last year with Kirby.

I can't imagine Saban would release him to LSU before his contract is up so he could help LSU recruit.

the Kirby thing last year did not go very smoothly, and Saban doesn't trust Kiffin like he trusted Kirby.

We didn't have a "defensive analyst" on board for most of the season last year that was ready to step up in case of a Kirby departure.

I don't think Kiffin leaving this year surprises anyone. Maybe the timing...but it looks as if Saban has a plan for the timing. It's nice to have a "In case of emergency - Break Glass" OC in the plan.

Kiffin has the entire (national championship?) offense returning which sets him up perfectly for a huge job next season(if not this season).

He may not have the option of returning...

particularly since they are trying to weasel in on our high priority QB recruit.

If his course has run its time at Bama, this is no surprise...and I would trust Saban's judgement as to whether he thinks Sark can navigate us through the playoffs or not.

Regardless, there would be no way in hell I would help LSU. I would keep Kiffin locked up through the recruiting season as per the contract.

BOL is reporting Houston may be interested in Lane for their head coaching vacancy.

That would be a good landing spot for him. The last three head coaches for them have gone on to coach at Texas A&M, Baylor and Texas.

That's a good career move.

With the 2016 regular season ending this past weekend, the coaching carousel is now in full swing. And third-year Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin has been a name that’s been brought up for several openings across the country.

The latest is the head-coaching vacancy at Houston. Kiffin has emerged as a candidate to replace Tom Herman, according to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, while former LSU head coach Les Miles has also been contacted for the job.

This season, Kiffin has had a major hand in the development of true freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts and helping Alabama boast the SEC’s top scoring offense with a 39.4 points per game average through 12 games.

Kiffin’s name has also been mentioned as a possibility at LSU in the same role he is currently serving in Tuscaloosa. Newly-tagged Tiger head coach Ed Orgeron worked under Kiffin in the Crimson Tide offensive coordinator’s head-coaching stops at Tennessee and USC, and it’s worth noting that Kiffin’s contract with Alabama is set to expire in February.

BamaOnLine senior analyst Travis Reier confirmed the buzz around Kiffin teaming up with his former colleague is real, but Nick Saban would not do the same during a Sunday teleconference for both of the SEC Championship Game’s head coaches.

“I know nothing about it, first of all, so I don’t think I should comment on things that I don’t know anything about,” Saban said Sunday afternoon. “He’s never mentioned it to me, and I’m sure he would if there was something out there.”

These will be intriguing storylines to follow as the Tide gets set to face Florida in the SEC title game Saturday and then will likely earn a berth in the four-team College Football Playoff.

It's also being reported that Les Miles is interviewing for the same job.

Would be a good move for Kiffin though as that job launched Sumlin, Briles, and Herman into the P5 big leagues.

It is an excellent landing spot. He won't have the focus on him like he did at USC & UT so is 'other activities' won't be as much of an issue and with his ability to develop QBs, I'd fully expect him to wreck shait in that league.

Les Miles to Houston as HC with Lane Kiffin as OC.

Houston in the 2017 playoffs.

One potential stumbling block for us if Kiffin does land a head coaching gig is he may take Tosh with him as his DC.

That would suck.

I didn't think that Kiffin and Tosh had that close of a relationship...I thought it was Sark and Tosh. I feel that Saban would have something up his sleeve to get Tosh to stay, esp seeing the improvements from our OLB's since he has been here.

What you said yesterday:

quote:

I'm am hearing Lane is gone to LSU as early as Sunday.

What you're saying today:

Which also was true yesterday. But now suddenly because ESPN reports that he could have a shot at Houston, that changes things? The notion that Kiffin was ever just going to jump to LSU without looking at his HC options simply was never believable.

That's not exactly true. He just can't coach players or call plays during game.

It's in the rulebook, black and white:

quote:

(a) Provides technical or tactical instruction related to the sport to a student-athlete at any time;

(b) Makes or assists in making tactical decisions related to the sport during on-court or on-field practice or competition; or

(c) Engages in any off-campus recruiting activities.

He is considered a coach if he does any of the above things.
