He missed five wide open deep receivers that would've scored like the 2022 Jalin Hyatt game all over again

He was terrible

They do though

As a passer he's not. He was average in a lot of passing efficiency stats in the AAC last year.

Yeah, I’m a bit concerned with Wideouts being 5 yards behind our defense a few times.

Wommack talked about that today and explained why that happened in a couple of situations:

Oh yea very meh passer. But I think some folks are underselling him and his offense as a whole. After the game with us, they averaged 35 points in a game in a decent enough conference

Busted coverages could and need to be cleaned up. 100%

It’s weird but I love it. Really liking what Wommack is doing. This weekend should tell us some more. This defense is flying like days of old.

I just want to see more blitzes. I really thought we'd be getting a Pruitt-esque defense, but to me this is looking like a Golding bend but don't break. Not as bad as Golding, but i wanna see more aggression.

Some interesting 3rd down stats:

quote:

Alabama is ranked #3 in the nation on third down defense with an opponent conversion rate of 14.29%.

35 attempts, 5 conversions.

quote:

Alabama has more opponent third down attempts against them than anyone in the top 45 of the best third down defenses.

quote:

The only two teams above Alabama in opponent third down conversion rate are Purdue (1 game played) and UNLV, respectively.

We are rolling in an army of 18 year olds at corner. This stuff is just gonna happen some, especially early. Have to hope they learn and get better from it, but we're going to give up some throws.

Not sure why, Womack himself has described what they do as modern defense built around containing explosive plays, forcing teams to march the field without error and then locking down the red zone. Points per opportunity and points per drive are the metrics that he himself talks about as being the ones that are most important.

Golding wasn't bend but don't break, he was just bad at running Saban's defense and gave up a bunch of yards. If you make every drive last 10-12 plays at best then you figure your odds of a negative play are pretty decent if you have a good front, which then knocks them off schedule and puts them in bad down and distance. Womack's defense is very much about making teams be uber efficient down the field and then once they get to the 30 using our athletes to shrink the field and force field goal attempts.

Saban's defense was about matching the perfect defensive call to what the offense wanted to do and conceding zero ground on any play. That became much more difficult with modern offense, substitution rules and speed. It led to a lot of 0 yard and negative plays, but also led to instances where we'd get gashed. This defense is much more like modern NFL defenses that want to eliminate explosives and win inside the 40s.
