Pretty much what I said, except you don't HAVE to keep the safeties over the top and can protect the middle of the field, stop the run better with 7 in the box, maybe let a safety cheat down lower on early downs.

I'd still play safeties over the top some, if Tua has lots of shots at man coverage, he is going to hit some deep ones. With a safety over the top maybe you can bait him into taking a shot and get a pick. Some man / zone combo coverage, hit some run blitzes to try and get negative plays on the early downs.

Then on third and medium to long, work with three down lineman, sometimes maybe two, lbs also standing up on the edge, but end up dropping some back to get into the throwing lanes and make him pause. Still only send 4 or 5 rushers most of the time though. Attack early, give him lots of looks, try and get a pick or something and rattle him - hopefully he starts playing slower, thinking too much to give you a chance.

This is all predicated on being able to keep bama's run game in check to some degree. Try not to get gashed in the run or pass, try and get a negative play in the run game, then when the opportunity comes on third and long, get creative with pressure to try and take advantage.

ETA: And all of that is a lot easier said than done, need a good DC and some smart players to avoid break downs.

I agree wholeheartedly. Good write-up.

Here's the catch; do all that and Bama probably still beats you. Most likey big. Maybe if you execute well you can beat the spread! Just so many weapons, there is almost always a matchup issue. Pressure is the only thing that could be the difference.

I think the key to beating Bama is getting a few turnovers and forcing FGs. Bama will move the ball on anyone in the country. But as long as you can prevent Bama from running away with it and get to the 4th with a shot, you've got a chance. As long as you are within a few big plays of the lead, you're still in it in modern CFB.

Bro, if Tua is really what I think he is everybody is fricked. Your only hope is to commit all resources to stop the passing game in which our RBs are gonna rape you and even then Tua is probably still gonna get ya. If Locksley has any smarts at all and Saban doesn't use Jalen at the wrong time we will probably shock everyone but us by dropping 40 plus on everybody. We know what we have but can't be brutally honest on the rant without coming off as cocky or stupid. Just watch it happen.

Easy. I still stack the box to stop the run. Pressure up the middle to make him uncomfortable in the pocket. Hopefully making him make some errant throws or make decisions quicker than he’d like not allowing him to get through his progressions.

No way to defend Tua’s accuracy+Bama receiver talent.

Completely shut it down? No. Pressure all parties involved into making mistakes? Yes.

Bama has played absolutely no one. Let's wait until we play some good defenses before declaring our offense to be literally indefensible.

Tua is not infallible and our receivers are not uncoverable.

Our Oline is good enough to give Tua 3 seconds in this scenario, enough to nickle and dime you to death. Similar to what Watson did to us in the title game in 2016. Additionally, while the true deep ball might not be there, Streaks, posts, and corners would be there all day. I disagree that you can "stack the box" and beat Bama. I think you lose by 50.

We haven't played a defense in the top 80 yet. Let's slow our respective rolls.

The only thing that could really change is pressure. A better defense doesn't suddenly make him less accurate just because they're covering better. He has a lot of throws that are as perfect as can be. It isn't like the only way he's been great is throwing to wide open dudes that the defense forgot about. A better defense would surely slow the offense down, but I don't think it makes Tua any less of a player.

I didn’t say it would be easy but that’s how you have to play Bama. Make them as one dimensional as you can but if Bama can run the ball you have no shot.

I'm on board with that, but you gotta get stops one way or the other.

This does bring up an interesting point: can Bama run if forced to? And will they commit to it, or go down swinging through the air? Me thinks SEC play will show Bama's true colors, and those colors still run more than many here think. There are some big rushing days ahead.

Can't help myself. I would wager he proves today that he is just that good regardless of the defense. The only way to stop him is to get to him quickly and either sack him or pressure him into an errant throw into double coverage which is possible but even then he is liable to summon his inner Johnny Manziel and escape pressure and burn you for a big play.
