I Don't Think Saban is at Bama Next Year

I didn't before. I do now. I've always derided those who say he is going to leave, but this year, I think it might actually happen, and I don't think dissatisfaction, money, fans or anything the the University has any control over has very much to do with it.

I just think that the college game has changed too much for him in the past four years. It's not the game he wants to coach. The thing he loves most about football -- scheming and destroying offenses with a near perfect defensive lineup and gameplan -- has largely been eliminated from the game. Even his style of offense doesn't fit anymore. Clock control, run and play action just don't fit the personnel available and/or cannot score quickly enough to keep up with a game where offenses rule and defenses struggle to catch their breath much less substitute.

The game he likes to play still exists in the NFL, a game built on scheme and risk management rather than "pace" and matchups.

He can still be the kind of coach and field the kind of team he wants to field there.

That's why I think if the Colts job opens up, and is offered to him, he seriously considers it and probably takes it.

I don't have any inside sources. I don't know the family. I'm not a cousin of a trainer. I just feel this might be when he decides to roll the dice one more time and take over a good spot with the Colts at the end of the season.

And I will wish him all the best.

Hope I'm wrong.

But I did skim through it. You think that just because things have changed, he is going to be all like "oh boo hoo, things aren't how I want them, I am going to just quit, because things are too hard now, and aren't how I'd like them to be."

I'm sorry, but Saban just doesn't seem like the type of person to look at things that way. I would maybe agree with you if he wasn't still winning almost every game he coaches...

If that happens, I'll wish him the best and jump on the Colts bandwagon. No hard feelings at all.

Whenever he leaves, it won't be for the NFL. I really doubt it will be for anything other than the lake.

I don't see Saban going back to the NFL. He's had too much success at the college level and will adjust just fine to whatever changes come about. I think that he enjoys developing young players and watching his seeds grow to go on to the next level. I could be totally wrong and if that scenario presents itself, I will grateful for the wins that he gave us while he was here.

It was just 1 loss....skies are still in place.

He wouldn't be in the position to take the job if he wasn't winning.

And what I said had nothing to do with hard or easy but satisfaction and "fun".

I don't think the college game as it stands is the game he wants to coach. The NFL still is.

Now he might stay just because the Colts won't offer him 8 million. Pagan only make 4.

The loss doesn't have much to do with this feeling. I was thinking about it before the season started around media days. If anything a bad season makes it more likely he stats rather than another sec or national title.

He won't leave unless it is to retire.

But that's the thing, with Saban, where are the lines between between "challenge," "satisfaction," and "fun?"

Jesus Christ.....stick another tampon in and sack up already....we lose one game and the world is ending

If Saban is frustrated now, how do you think he is going to fare in the NFL? Furthermore Saban is nothing if not a complete control freak and he won't get that in the NFL. I don't think Saban is a particularly desirable candidate for an NFL HC job after Miami. if its about money, I think there are only four coaches in the NFL that make more than Saban does at Bama and he can coach at Bama as long as he wants....

He didn't like the attitudes in the pros. They weren't coachable.

I could see Saban leaving in a couple of years for ESPN/retirement/AD. The AD proposition is interesting because we haven't made any moves toward hiring a more permanent AD. Now that the university has a permanent president, I wonder if that will become a priority. It will be telling if we don't at least start the AD hiring process within the next year.

I would immediately become a Colts fan, but what really makes me doubt it is the 2017 class he is recruiting. That 2017 class is shaping up as possibly his best class ever.

Exactly-Saban genuinely likes helping college players succeed as people and players, and he can't do that in the NFL.

Don't we say this every year? And do you really think Saban will be here for 2017's class to graduate? Really?

I'm not saying it happens. I'm just saying that this year is the first year I've had a strong feeling that it does for the reasons mentioned, not some kneejerk reaction to a loss.

He's never going back to the NFL. Premier college coaches make more than NFL coaches now. Barring extenuating circumstances like a coach who prefers the NFL for some reason, the days of the NFL poaching coaches from powerhouse programs are over.

I agree completely with this line of thought. The moment Battle was hired, I felt like he might be a placeholder for Saban.

Everybody thinks Saban's all about the football program, but in reality nothing's further from the truth. Just look at the number of stories we've seen about how he goes out of his way to help coaches in other sports recruit. There's no doubt he'd expect excellence throughout the entire athletic program and he'd be a fundraising machine.

The only potential downside I see is that potential football coaches would worry that if they took the job, Nick would always be looking over their shoulder.

His style of offense would work fine if we were still running it. It would probably work better than ever, since most teams are geared to stop HUNH/spread teams on defense.

When Saban leaves Alabama, he won't be going elsewhere to coach.
