1. Washington blows the game to Texas at the end of the game, like they nearly did?

2. We beat Michigan and beat Washington in the final?

3.We beat Michigan and lose to Washington in the final?

I'll still say yes to all 3, but I dunno.
Just a random hypothetical for a Friday night.

I wonder if still Saban retired after winning the title this year

From our standpoint I don’t think it would have changed. Not sure if any of those scenarios would have impacted DeBoer.

I don't think he would've hesitated if he had won

I'm sure he would have rather gone out with a title. So absolutely, yes.

He said the grind was getting to him, he wasn't sure he could do it anymore.

Just watching a video on espn from 2018. Amazing how much he aged in the last 5 years.

I have as much respect for him as I ever have, for simply knowing when the time was up, and going out on his own terms.

Bobby Bowden and Paterno embarrassed themselves.

He went out on his terms with no decline in performance. Like a king.
If we truly never entertained Kiffin and Sark said no then who is better to have gotten?

Whatever WOULD’VE happened one this is for sure… the dude went from coaching in the National title on Monday to the head coach of the greatest program in the history of college football. Guys head has to be spinning.

I disagree. There were cracks in the facade.

The decline was small, and it was a decline from the absolute summit, the likes of which the sport has never seen.

We declined "all the way down to beating our rivals, going undefeated in the SEC, winning the SECCG and beating UGA and making a playoff appearance and perhaps being a play or two away from beating Michigan and winning it all." So I certainly keep "decline" in perspective.

Samples of the "decline" for me include:
- it's been a while since we've had mess like the QB room to start this season. We recruited Tyler Buchner. Milroe, God Bless Him, is behind almost every starter we've had in that position. That goes to recruiting
- Coordinator hires. Saban had a good run of coordinator hires but the last few haven't been great. Kevin Steel did fine, but had the feel of the last person who would take the job. No one else was beating down the door of the ND OC. Not to mention Golding.
- How do you watch the center snap the ball like that all year and not correct it, or have recruited someone who could take his place?

Saban might disagree with my individual points, but I think he too could feel it slipping beyond his grasp (at his age) and didn't want to ride it further down.
