He seems to think Bama’s only way in the playoffs is to Win the SEC Championship?

Lots of people think that. There is another route, but it depends on some teams above and probably below us losing.

Why would Rodney Orr know more about that than any Tom, Dick, or Harry?

He’s an old school Alabama insider through booster connections. It’s not like he’s palling around with folks on the committee

If Alabama gets left out for losing the SEC Championship game, say goodbye to conference championship games.

The SEC will flip out on the playoff committee if we’re punished for playing an extra game. The only way I could see it happening was if we get totally blown out and there are several bid stealers behind us.

I think the committee would love for us to put on a good showing against Auburn and OU/ND/OM lose or struggle so they could justifiably put us in the 7-9 range before the SECCG.

Been reading his site for years. Seems to be a straight shooter. Not a bomb thrower. Not a member but have access. I do not post on his site.

He's likely basing that off what the Committee said this year about the conference championship game being another data point:

CFP selection committee chairman Hunter Yurachek to ESPN on a team losing a conference championship game: "The data point of a conference championship game will be just like it is in the past. It is another data point. For most teams, a 13th data point that will be used to compare them to other teams in the ranking."

So, what will the Committee weigh more heavily? The fact a team made it to a conference championship game or the fact that they lost? Based on how they've acted so far this year, I'd argue the latter will be weighed more heavily.

Their “data point” bullshite is just word salad like everything else they say.

Like, yes they will take the game in to account if someone wins. It may even bump them down(but not out) if they lose. But we’ve seen this play out twice already.

They put in SMU last year. They put in TCU after losing to a very mid Kansas St team a few years ago. Both times it screwed us but they didn’t want to punish teams for playing an extra game.

If we get boat raced….MAYBE. But they aren’t leaving us out if it’s less than a 2 score game.

There's turnover every year on the Committee. What they did in previous years is not a guarantee as to what they'll do in subsequent years. Look how far Bama dropped in the rankings when we lost to OU. I have zero faith the Committee would keep a 3-loss team in the CFP. Again, don't look at what past Committees have done. You need to take a look at how they're evaluating teams this year.

If we beat fAU and then lose in the SEC CG, I guess we'll see Many posters thought we were a lock last year too.

And we only weren’t because of this exact scenario. If they leave us out for the exact opposite reason as last year then the sport isn’t worth watching anymore.

And to that I'd say the scenario doesn't necessarily matter since the Committee is just evaluating data points. The teams, and data, are different every year, so maybe a loss in a conference championship game knocks someone out this year because the teams behind them in the rankings have better "data points."

Will they though? This is the same SEC that routinely fricks up our schedule and gives every damn team we play a bye before our game and makes it as hard as possible for us.

It’s the same data point

You’re right. We’ll see if it plays out that way. No real need to debate it here. But my original point is Rodney Orr wouldn’t know any more than any of us when it comes to this.

Loss in a conference championship game is one data point. I'm talking about all the other data points that are used to evaluate teams. Just because one data point would be the same doesn't mean all the others they use are the same. So evaluation of all the data points together could produce a different result.

If anyone thinks bama can lose another game and make the CFP they are a couple of bubles shy of center.

I already hate how many times I've read the words "data point" in this thread.

If we lose one of the next two games, we have no business competing for a national championship anyway

That's how I see it.

SMU did it last year and it knocked us out. Maybe we do it this year? Or just win the SEC and it doesn’t matter.

This is exactly it right here. Nothing the past committees have done determine what this committee will do.

Let's just go beat au then wait to see how things shake up. One game at a time.

I said this in the other thread but I honestly think this is it.

It doesn’t matter what any school thinks.

They either leave us in, or drop us out. But and a huge but

BYU loses and leaves the 11 spot for Miami I’d imagine. So it comes down to will they put Miami above us at 10. That’s it. I don’t think they will, they will say Bama played in a conference championship and Miami didn’t.
