He loves the reaction he is getting. I don't want the reaction... I am just sad about the decision. I was hoping for a bigger splash on offense. Defense will be better (I think). Now my concern with the guy we have at OC is OLine

Zero heartburn. I'm interested to see what Rees can do with the talent on hand and if he can manage the QBs. Steele is fine at DC, certainly no worse than Golding.

You might be surprised to learn that 99% of fans don’t keep a rolling list of prospective coaching talent. That’s the head coach’s job.

That’s not the right question, the right question is “Considering both these hires do you think they can put a team in the field that has a better chance of winning than Pete and BOB?”

If the answer isn’t yes then Saban has made risky hires again.

For me the answer is not yes. It could it turn out to be yes, but it could also turn out to be no. He needed to do better with one or the other and he did not for the second time in a row.

Also, I think it is great for Steele he will get his 10th year in the state of Alabama. I like the guy, just not as DC.

I like the Rees hire better than Kliff Kingsbury. Never understood the hype that guy gets.

Steele is an instant upgrade over Pete IMO.

You admit that it's the coach's job to know this stuff, not yours. So, you'd have to agree that he's probably better than you at determining who would be good at running the offense he wants to run.

So basically, you're just here to bitch about it.

Honestly, the more I think about the hires, the better I like them. I know that's typical fandom. But, Steele is a good DC, and I was actually less excited when he was announced than I was for Rees. I feel pretty confident that Steele, with Bama's talent, will be better than Golding. Rees is apparently a very bright guy that can win the whiteboard. My only fear is that he's like Golding and that's all he can win. But, there's no reason to believe he is. He did some good things as a brand new OC for a ND team that probably didn't have 3 players on offense that would have started at Bama.

Let's see how it goes.

Rees and Steele both appear to be good fits for our needs and substantial upgrades over BO'B & Pete. I'm optimistic about both hires.

ETA: I'm also optimistic Pruitt will be hired at some point, perhaps initially as an Analyst.

I can, Pruitt or Lake for DC. The DC hire became more important once Rees was hired. If Pruitt had happened, maybe the Rees hiring would be ok. But without a solid DC that can keep opponents to lower scores I don’t think the style offense Rees will run is going to be able to keep up with teams that can score at will

And please do not try and sell anyone on Steele being same level as someone like Pruitt or Kirby, he is not on that level.

I respect your opinion, and notion that both hires are somewhat wait and see. I'm hopeful that we'll get Auburn Kevin Steele and not Miami Kevin Steele.

I'm also hopeful that Rees is a young, hungry guy that knows his shite, is just licking his chops with the talent we have, and doesn't get a DUI.

It is what it is, out of our control. All we can do is hope for the best and trust the GOAT.

Look, I love the guy. I’ll never ever call for his head or his resignation, the dude is owed more than he will ever be able to receive from the university and its fans. And he deserves to stay as long as he wants and hire whoever he wants without question. But he doesn’t automatically deserve zero criticism. He built this thing and he conditioned us all to expect a team that is bound for the playoffs every single season. When he was hired I remember thinking “if we can just win the SEC West every three or four years I’ll be so happy”. But now I expect more because of what he’s done. And I expected more from home with these hires.

It’s easy to trust the GOAT when it comes to recruiting, outworking everyone else, and manipulating every obstacle and change that comes along.

It used to be kickers you couldn’t trust him with, I’m afraid it’s becoming hiring coordinators.

Kevin Steele's coaching career has had peaks and valleys.
He did well for AU.
2017 Defensive coach of the year.
Beating BAMA twice in 5 years there.
Not so well the 1 year in Miami. But, they've been down or average at best for a while now.
Steele will bring an energy, attitude to the defense that Golding couldn't do.
We were 36th against the run last season.
I look for that to improve under Steele.
Thank goodness Todd Grantham turned Saban down for the Saints job.
I truly believe Steele is our DC for only this season. With Jeremy Pruitt finally cleared to take the reigns in 2024.
