I was at the scrimmage.
Austin Mack didn't start strong (he took the first series), but after maybe the third he settled down and took a bit more of what the defense gave him. I'd say he barely had the better day overall, but he has a tendency to get streaky and it takes him a couple of plays to get back in rhythm. When something breaks down he gets happy feet.
Didn't really think Keelon Russell looked great. Maybe a click slow on processing time. His natural inclination seems to be to climb the pocket and roll to his left, which put ball placement in awkward spots several times for the receivers (or AK Dear on checkdowns).
Cederian Morgan looked like a grown man physically. Almost exactly like Julio in pads. Plays like a freshman, but he will be special.
TEs had two big plays on delayed releases right down the middle of the field.
Defense was miles ahead of the offense. They ran everything they could and shifted continuously. A lot of concepts had the safeties up about seven or eight yards off the LOS, like they were daring the QBs to throw over the top.
Defensive coaches and players were out towards the numbers most of the day, and their energy was unmatched. At one point I think the the majority of the defense was out on the field, and someone on the offense staff complained to the refs.
First team was dominant, with lots of jailbreaks up front. Second and third groupings mainly focused on mixing in various DBs with the starters. Bray Hubbard probably had the stick of the day.
Yhonzae Pierre is a beast and Isaia Faga impressed me late at nose.
Carmelo O'Neal (Mercer) replaced Dijon Lee a good bit and Austin Mack went after him almost every time.
Caleb Woodson (VT) was a pleasant surprise at LB and looks the part.
Overall I was frustrated with the OL and QB play. At this point in the year that's probably to be expected. I do wonder if the defense was given the freedom to dial it up just to see how the offense responded, or if anyone would step up accordingly. I don't think that happened, at least yet.
Just my two cents.

The report I got from my REC sauce was similar, but far more critical of the OL and QBs, all of whom he described in....less than positive terms. He's a glass half empty kind of guy though.

How was Mack with the short to intermediate looks as far as accuracy?
My concern is that when I've seen him out there he will hit someone on a laser beam 25 yard out that where he looks like an NFL 1st round guy, but then throw with the same velocity at someone's feet on a five yard quick hit to a TE/RB.
As far as the OL was there any bend/push in the run game? I heard the tackles were getting terrorized with edge pressure but didn't know if that was both Lloyd and Jaymes or what?

I think his first throw of the day hit a TE right in the hands and bounced up for a pick (maybe by Dre Kirkpatrick). That was probably a velocity issue.
Early on he seemed confused and tried to force a couple of back-shoulder type throws that got there too late and hit the DB.
Later, I thought he did really well with his ball placement and touch. When he was checking down he especially did a really good job of throwing the RB open.

Keelon actually did this a couple of times, and threw behind the receiver a good bit, almost like he was pulling it because he had too much velocity. One memorable throw late was to his left, and it ended up away and to the feet of a WR or TE who was standing wide open across the middle. It looked like a wild baseball pitch.
I don't recall Mack having velocity issues except maybe on the first series.
One thing to note, when they're warming up, they stand side-by-side and throw hard.

There were some successful A-B gap runs late, but by that point I think the defense had some substitutions. Most attempts prior to that were off-tackle with Daniel Hill, almost like a draw, and they didn't go anywhere. The offense was in third-and-long a lot. Like, a lot.
Jackson Lloyd looked good physically, but I'd swear there's something odd about his pass-pro stance. His left leg is too far back maybe, like he cheats open because he's afraid to get beat wide. (I only noticed this on one series because it's hard to watch everyone live, so it may have just been random.)
I remember one RB screen that looked good over to his side, but then it got blown up immediately.
There was a goal line play where it seemed the defense shifted late and somehow had two defenders rushing free off the edge. I was really curious to see what was about to happen with Jayvin James, but Keelon dropped the snap and it got whistled dead.
Faga was double-teamed on James' side and pushed both linemen almost back into the QB. On the next play he came around the edge and beat his man, which is hilarious because his body type is more in the mold of Terrence Cody.
What I'm getting at is we seemed to be in the right spots, we just got pushed around a bit and couldn't hold gaps. Again, whether this is a product of the DL I guess we'll see, but it was a bit concerning considering similar talent in our league.

Jorden Edmonds suffered an injury in the scrimmage.
Doesn't appear to be serious, but he'll miss a couple weeks.

I didn't notice that, but it would explain why Carmelo O'Neal was playing so much.

If you had to play UGA tomorrow who are you starting at QB?
Probably tough to tell but does your gut tell you Thompkins and Green were that elite inside like some podcast guys have suggested or was it a combination of quality DL play and dysfunction up front for the offense?
There are some people really excited about Thompkins in particular as an all-SEC/potentially AA type inside, just curious on what you saw.
This is a great insight. There were OL analysts last year who believed we were tipping our calls based on stance last year. I'd hoped that with better coaching (wasnt a Kap fan as an OL guy) that we would see less of those types of issues, but its so early and Lloyd is so inexperienced I'm not trying to overreact either.
That in and of itself kind of tells you KR isnt fully processing pressure yet. We actually have TEs who can square up this year, we have to be ready to use them or at least have a hot read slant ready to go to counter pressure and pair with that NFL lightning release he has which we haven't seen in years.
Its early so I'm not overreacting, but thanks again for breaking it down for those of us who weren't there.

I guess my concern is that I'm thinking our defensive front (if you include the edge linebackers) is going to be top 5-6 in the conference and probably top 20 in the nation but not exactly the reincarnation of 2016.
Make me think the OL is still a hot mess right now but maybe new OLC and AOLC means there is a horizon for them to get better. The "biggest improvement happens between game 1 and 2" axiom needs to hold with this unit I bet.

Honestly it was such a small sample size I couldn't say. I'd have to see how they handle live action, and would probably take it into the first game just based on what I saw. And I didn't want to consider that going in.
But it could've just been a bad day, the lights were too bright, it was 115 degrees, etc. There's a lot more contributing data (over months) that I haven't seen. There's also a chance we only saw what they wanted us to see, I guess.

I don't remember much push up the middle per se other than stunts, it was mainly collapsed pockets outside-in. But as they didn't really give up any rushing yards either, this may have been by design. (I don't want to use the dreaded term mush rush, but you get the idea – maybe it was more of a hit and shred technique.)

There was one base formation we ran a good bit that was unbalanced with two TEs and a RB, and sometimes both TEs would motion to the other side, usually the boundary, and the RB would move over, or the RB would then motion up to trips/empty. I think we'll see more TE action in general this year, hopefully (which does make sense).

I think the coaches have a lot of interesting toys to play with at TE and we're gonna see a ton of 12 personnel with these questions on the OL and injuries/issues at WR.
Why run out Rico Scott who cant block if you can motion around Kaleb Edwards or Marshall Pritchett and chip off edge guy if needed?

I'm pretty sure Cederian Morgan had the kick-out block that sealed it for AK Dear on the scoring play where he got hurt.
He's a big body out there (and in motion).
They tried him a few times as sort of an H-back, but I don't think he's strong enough yet.

Online rumor is he had the tight rope surgery. So I imagine he'd probably be back by October at the latest. Maybe September depending on rehab.

Yeah, but even if he is back the question becomes how effective is he when he does return.

You’d hope by that point that we have guys established. If they are doing a good job then you don’t rock the boat just to do it.
As a RB who is cutting, if he he that surgery, you’re probably looking at the GA or Tenn game before he’s back.

Tight rope surgery is bad news, especially for RBs. Who have we had that went through that and came back successfully?
I know Tua had it but he was a RB.
