Because NFL defenses are significantly more talented than any college defense. By sheer on field talent, it's a totally different game. If Alabama could have the second best Saban Era player at every position on defense, every year, there isn't an offense in cfb that runs through them. There is no mayden or savion smith or slow depriest or first year cyrus jones in modern NFL defense barring catastrophic injuries

The vast majority of NFL players were, if not the best, one of the best players on their college teams. People never seem to understand this.

The talent gap closes in the NFL between offense and defense also. Your 3rd best DB in college is often a once highschool wideout/runningback who had "bad hands". In the NFL, that player may be the same, but he is the best one of those culled from years of drafts. going from the 1% of all athletes to the .01%.

Meanwhile Amari Cooper is still cooper, Julio is still Julio. Those players may get better, but the advantage they carried in college is not nearly as pronounced.

Golding didn’t seem to know how to adjust

With both ILBs being true freshman, the potential adjustments get shrunken down to only a handful of options. How do so few on this board get this?

I was thinking of starting a thread asking if we will ever see dominate defense again

If a team has NFL-type talent at every positon, particularly at the pass rushing and coverage positions - yeah, it could be done.

Personally, I'd like to see the NCAA adopt the NFL rule regarding ineligible receivers downfield. It's 1 yard, not 3. Basically, lineman can't go downfield AT ALL during a pass. That change would help balance the scales a bit.

I agree with this 100%.

On the flip side, NFL offenses have significantly more talent than college rosters. Should have some equaling out.

I addressed that in my followup. The best receivers/running backs/offensive linemen have been doing that for years and at the skill positions can often break open a game in college. In the NFL the caliber of athlete closes the windows that players have to hit the hole/make the throw/beat the defender in a 1 on 1.

Yes the best of the best is there in the NFL, but on offense in college, one Jamar Chase breaks a game open for LSU (notably facing Clemson's best DB in Terrell), one Daron Payne or CJ mosley does not. In college the matchups get significantly more tilted if the offense is able to seek them out than in the NFL. Obviously, DB 3,4, or 5 for the Titans is not as good as Tyreke Hill, but he is worlds better than any DB Hill faced in college.
