One more post for the Roach haters here.

So, please explain why CNS kept Freddie on board for so long if he was so bad? Was it because he could really recruit, or simply because Saban could not upgrade the position coach due to nobody wanting to come here and coach under him? I mean, why is it that EVERYBODY but Nick himself seems to have the finger of blame pointed at them for the failures, but he gets credit for the good stuff?

Again, at SOME point it is not all the assistant coaches' faults for the dropoff the last few years of CNS' tenure. Perhaps it's just "coincidence" that the dropoff coincided perfectly with the NIL/portal era(?)

Our recruiting of top DL was affected both by Georgia getting studs and the 2022 Texas A&M class that was clearly bought. We wanted most of those guys. Overton was one of them.

I am PAINFULLY aware of all the misses we had recruiting top DLs. It's the primary reason why the defense in general has become so mediocre in recent years. Georgia has basically OWNED those guys during the last 4-5 years.

Name your top 10 players of the Saban era and tell me how many were from Alabama.

Also, maybe let DeBoer get at least a year on campus before we start criticizing his ability to recruit the state.

And DeBoer will too as he and his staff have roots. But it can’t always be about where you’re from. It has to be about need and how you fit. Same as it was with Saban.

I find this comical that I am trying to be a voice of reason on in-state recruiting after years of advocating that Saban should have signed more.

Saban had a lot of top 15 picks from Alabama

Julio Jones
Marcel Dareus
Rolando McClain
Dee Milliner
Mark Barron
Andre Smith
Quinnen Williams
Henry Ruggs
OJ Howard
DJ Fluker
Reuben would’ve been without the legal stuff

I’m sure I’m forgetting a player or two.

I’ll edit to say I don’t care where a kid comes from, but I think it’s important to recruit Alabama because Alabama produces really good football players, whether they are rated high by the recruiting sites or not

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Andre Smith a Shula recruit? I could be wrong.

I remember when Sunseri played at Northridge.

There’s so many to go through to choose

I know he had some great Alabama recruits that are pretty much legends by now, especially the guys from the early years. My only point was that he had just as many or more that weren't from the state.

Derrick Henry
Mark Ingram
Trent Richardson
Najee Harris
Minkah Fitzpatrick
Patrick Surtain
D Smith
Metchie
Bryce Young
Tua
Hurts
Kenyan Drake
Lacy

How many star players we signed came from Florida ? Too many to list that are NFL stars now. I guarantee you that nobody cared what state they came from when they made plays for Alabama in college.

I agree. Louisiana also.

But all of a sudden locking down the state is a huge metric for a first year coach, even when this past class wasn't exactly overflowing with talent.

But I guess 5 stars from California don't play as hard as 4 stars from the south.

I'm all for recruiting nationally, but I'd like to see Bama look to sign 5 of the top 10 players in-state every year.

We’re getting outspent at the LOS in my opinion.

Yep. Our prep OL recruiting has been fine, but I don't think anyone expects freshman impact from those guys so I bet the initial NIL deals they get aren't anything special compared to positions with more immediate impact potential like DL, WR, and RB. You pretty much have to overpay for elite DL at this point though. Prep or portal. Nearly all of them are going for the big NIL paydays. The staff needs to figure that one out. I understand the hesitation to end up with a handful of guys getting a disproportionate share of the NIL money, but you have to have a good defensive front to win in the SEC. It's not optional or a luxury.

Any idea the war chest Alabama has each year in NIL?
