What a dramatic sack before that play. We had a similar sack against Georgia just before, but they had an amazing kicker!! We had not so much. I remember hoping maybe we could get an intermediate play that could inch us closer for a FG. But then the bomb!!!! Was an extremely exciting way to win the NCG. I almost didnt believe my eyes.

What if the graduate transfer qualified for the Bryant Scholarship?

I'm not sure if this was ever answered for you but, yes this transfer would still count toward the 25.

Tidal posted the relevant bylaw a while ago.

quote:

15.5.6.3.7 Recruited Student-Athlete, Varsity Competition. [FBS/FCS] In accordance with Bylaw 15.5.1.2, a recruited student-athlete (per Bylaw 15.02.8) receiving institutional financial aid certified as having been granted without regard in any degree to athletics ability becomes an initial counter in the first academic year in which the student-athlete competes on the varsity level. (See Bylaw 15.5.1.2.1.) (Revised: 10/27/05 effective 8/1/06, 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

Corrected: Once an athletic transfer plays in a game they become an initial counter.

Regardless of whether or not they transfered to the school, FBS players who are on non-athletic scholarships do not count toward the signees, initial counters and total counters limits until they compete (play) in a game -- according to underlined and bold text below. But, it's doubtful a transfer with less than three years of eligibility would be willing to sit out an entire season.

So while this situation is unlikely say a player transfers with 3 years to play and doesn't see the field for 2 years. Does this mean he can practice, workout and travel with the team during that period of time and not be an initial counter until the third year if he is on a non-athletic scholarship?

Yes. If he doesn't play he's sort of like a walk-on scout teamer who's fortunate that he has a non-athletic scholarship. But to prevent that non-athletic scholarship from being a loophole to get around signee and counter limits, he counts if/when he plays.

That's technically incorrect wording. A player on a non-athletic scholarship, regardless of whether he transferred in or not, will count if/when he plays in a game.

It's the same for a multisport athlete who's on the FB team but plays another sport on a scholarship for that sport. He counts toward limits in that sport unless/until he plays in a FB game. At that point he counts against the FB limits instead of the other sport. Again, that's designed to prevent a loophole for getting around the FB limits. Basketball can't get away with it either.

Damn it, It’s technically correct . That sentence is true but is incomplete and doesn’t answer the question. I did update it again to include all athletes not just transfers.

ETA: Crap you said technically incorrect wording, I couldn't hit a barn with a shotgun today.

I've learned that you have to very carefully analyze the wording of NCAA Bylaws or else you can easily misinterpret them.

Tbh, I'm a bit baffled with this scenario. Section 15.5.6.3.7 applies to a "recruited student-athlete." A "non-recruited student-athlete" is one who had no official visit, no off-campus meetings with coaches and didn't sign an NLI. A non-transfer or a transfer could meet those criteria. So, I haven't figured out yet if a non-recruited student-athlete on a non-athletic scholarship also has to count if/when they play. It seems like they would.

I use to follow the numbers and researched all the rules to get an idea on how many we take and who counts where. The only thing I learn we will never truly know until after they sign.

I do track the numbers and I agree, there can be unknowns in play. For example, one is whether Hatcher is indeed on a scholarship. Another is whether Tyson's family might pay his way, maybe only until January 2020, whereby Tyson could then be counted toward 2020 signee and initial counter limits. UA might (or might not) disclose what those two situations are at some point.
