Well I hope you are wrong Surge, but maybe one of the 2 commits is backing out?

I definitely don't want this to effect the number of guys we can sign this year. It's such a pain in the arse dealing with scholarship numbers.
Side note, a storm must be right on top of me because the lightening and immediate loud thunder about made me shite myself.

If he is part of the 18 class, then I will take one spot from the 19 class that Bama could back count. 26 is now the magic number in the 19 class.
Don't think it will affect any of the 19 QB recruits. This is just to build depth for the 18 season. Remember Bama was going to get that grad transfer QB that went to Wash St instead. Saban always planned to get another QB before the 18 season.

Just to stir the pot, what if taking this guy means we don't expect one of the other 2018 guys to make it in.

We initially had 22 Initial Counters in the 2018 cycle leaving us with three unused 2018 Initial Counter spots. Musika used one and now Hatcher uses one. The one left can be used to backcount a 2019 early enrollee into and we'll have 25 IC spots for 2019.
So, we can now sign 26 in the 2019 cycle. We might be able to take one more if Paul Tyson's family pays his way, whereby he'd be a walk-on. But I've heard nothing more than speculation about that.
After 2018 NSD, the projected 2018 fall roster was at 85 scholarship players. The departure of Warmack and Kennedy and addition of Musika and Hatcher put UA's 2018 roster back at 85 scholarship players.
ETA: remaster916 beat me to the submit button.
Also, I doubt adding Hatcher is a sign of anything other than maybe the possibility of Jalen Hurts transfering soon.

If we don't have an endowed scholarship for anyone in the Bryant bloodline who can walk and chew gum at the same time I would be extremely disappointed in my University.

Iirc, NCAA rules state that football players on any kind of school-provided scholarships will count against limits. I may be wrong (my recall sux).

Really, the important question is, did this bump up our ranking for last year or not?

That has to be the case. A number of players would have qualified academically for the Presidential or National Merit scholarships at Bama and they all counted against the 25/85.

Yes, if you take a scholarship of any kind, academic, or even in another sport, but are also in the football program, you count against the 25/85.

Hatcher added 0.88 points to the total. We're now at #6, only 0.03 points behind #5 Penn St.
ETA: Looks like good luck post worked again.

LINK ]Breaking: Alabama lands 2018 QB (BOL)
quote:
At least one more signal caller will join the Crimson Tide’s roster for the 2018 season as three-star quarterback Layne Hatcher flipped his commitment from Arkansas State to Alabama on Friday.
"For a while they've been wanting to do a preferred walk-on type of situation, but we didn't think that was the best idea for me," Hatcher told BamaOnLine. "Then today they came back and gave me an offer to come play for them. I was super excited and I was all onboard for it."
The Little Rock (Ark.) Pulaski Academy product had committed to the Red Wolves back in February and held a ceremonial signing ceremony, but never actually signed with the program, which allowed the Tide to stay in contact.
He spoke with Nick Saban earlier this morning when he got the good news.
"They like that I'm a very accurate thrower," Hatcher said. "That's definitely my strongest point. I'm not a 6-5 guy with a bazooka arm. I'm the guy that's a detail guy that wins and cares about the little stuff. I really focus on my accuracy and mental game. That's what they saw in me and they thought I could be a good help for them. I was super excited that they even thought about me as a player."

The Tide will now have four scholarship quarterbacks on the roster in Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts, and Mac Jones. Hatcher welcome the competition.
"No problem," he said. "I would love to learn from those guys, compete with those guys, and be friends with those guys. I want to surround myself with the best and they're the best in the college game right now. I'm excited to be around those guys and learn and compete with them... to be the best I can be."
Another top Alabama target at Pulaski Academy is the nation's No. 1 tight end for 2019 in Hudson Henry. The Tide now has another recruiter going after the 6-foot-5, 225-pounder. "Definitely getting in his ear," Hatcher said. "I'm going to go see him tonight before I leave actually and do my own recruiting."
A 6-foot-1, 204 pounds, Hatcher is rated the No. 53 dual-threat quarterback and No. 2,182 overall player in the country, per the 247Sports Composite. Last season he threw for 5,779 yards and 66 touchdowns, including a 757-yard, six touchdown performance in one outing.
Hatcher will arrive on campus Saturday and move in on Sunday.
Note: Hatcher puts UA's 2018 roster back to 85 players on scholarship.

Did Arkansas recruit him? He seems like a perfect fit in a Chad Morris offense.
We already had another 4* QB committed from in-state when Morris got here and wouldn’t have taken another QB in the class if it wasn’t Jerry Jones’ grandson
I’m sure Enos was already really familiar with him though. PA’s system always puts out QBs with gaudy stats.

Welp, this is Hudson Henry's top 5

Backcounting early enrollees into unused prior year(s) IC spots is all that's allowed now. I think 25 regular + 3 backcounters is the cycle limit.
