Deondrick Glass Heading to Oklahoma State (247Sports)

quote:

You can bet that Oklahoma State fans boosted the ratings on ESPN3, not exactly the Mothership of ESPN but not the Ocho either, as one of the top remaining running back prospects in college football recruiting Deondrick Glass out of Katy, Texas made his recruiting declaration in his hometown NRG Stadium at halftime of the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl.

In an emotional announcement he chose Oklahoma State. The hats on the table in front of him were from Texas, Alabama, and Oklahoma State from left to right.

Glass started with thanking his family and coaches. "I want to thank everybody," he said. "I lost my grandmother last year on February 23 and I would talk to here before every game," Glass said remembering his grandmother. "She was sick and was not able to go to my games, but I know now she is watching over me."

After honoring his grandmother he paused and couldn't speak, but then his brother started mulling over the caps and Deondrick said, "you know which one it is." His younger brother picked up the Oklahoma State hat after briefly pausing in front of the Bama cap. Deondrick put the hat on and said he would be going to Oklahoma State.

"Coach Woz (Wozniak) and Coach Gundy, I hope you are, I know you are out there watching," Glass said. "Let's go get a bowl, go win a national championship and I want to win the Heisman as a freshman."

Glass was deciding between the Cowboys and Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Miami (Fla.), and Texas. He had announced on his Twitter site back on Dec. 10 that he would make the announcement during the All-American Bowl being played in his hometown. The game features top players from the Lone Star State of Texas on one team and players from the other 49 states on the opposing squad.

The 5-11, 200 pound Glass has been sensational on the field. Last season he was the player opposing defenses were gearing to stop and he had 225 carries for 1,951-yards with an 8.7-yards per carry average and 30 touchdowns, all on the ground.

His junior season he carried 125 times for 1,101-yards. His average per carry was 8.8-yards and he scored 21 touchdowns. As a sophomore he hit it big with 1,912-yards rushing and 30 touchdowns. He averaged a whopping 10.4-yards a carry that season.

Glass officially visited Oklahoma State the homecoming weekend and witnessed the Pokes beat Texas 38-35. Glass had a strong visit seeing the game and then was spotted on the field after the game and watched primarily the Oklahoma State students celebrate the Cowboys fourth straight win over the Longhorns.

He was also spotted enjoying the atmosphere in the Oklahoma State locker room. He also bonded with OSU head coach Mike Gundy, running backs coach John Wozniak, and offensive line coach Josh Henson. The Cowboys also have a commitment from Glass's Katy teammate that he has played with since middle school in offensive tackle Cole Birmingham.

Glass also officially visited Alabama and Ohio State, both in November on game weekends in Tuscaloosa and Columbus.

If Pickering were to flip would that effect Byron Young at all? Really like the upside on Young.

MSU is feeling really good about Young BTW. Talked to two coaches today, not sure where their info is coming from . They feel like he is being pushed out by Bama but that is not the case to my knowledge . I know the hiring of Tony Hughes has helped the cause though

I haven't seen any indications that Bama doesn't want to sign Young. I do think Bama's staff might prefer Pickering over Sopsher though, especially since Ish openly insists his scrub brother has to be included in a package deal.

Only having 4 backs on scholarship is playing with fire. ESPECIALLY with our injury luck in recent years.

Actually it seems like we're slightly less banged up at the RB spot in the past year or two, whereas the defense has been utterly decimated by injuries. At any rate, it's better to not have less than 5 on scholarship at only time.

O I agree, I'm pro taking 2 backs, but I don't know if taking a plan C back is any better in terms of depth to just rolling with 4.

Bolden could probably play RB if needed.

If we don't sign Keilan Robinson, I suppose Slade Bolden or Chadarius Townsend could be moved to RB (APB-type) this spring.

Isn't it looking pretty good that Keilan will sign with us especially since Locksley isn't going to personally poach our recruits?

I think so, but Hank said recently that it's hard to read Robinson since he doesn't say much. He visited Bama twice and hasn't taken or planned any visits elsewhere since he committed in June. Saban and Gattis visited him on Dec 10.

However, a 247 Michigan reporter posted a brief article today saying UM staff (I assume Gattis) will visit him this Wed. It also said, "Some reports have surfaced implying that Robinson already signed with Alabama, but I am told those reports are false."

Since the NCAA prohibits other schools from contacting signees and it's likely Gattis would know if he'd secretly signed with Bama, it now appears that he hasn't signed.

We've got plenty of athletes that could be an emergency depth option at RB. No need to waste a scholly on a kid that won't play much if at all until he sees he's out of his depth and transfers out after a couple of years taking up a spot on the 85 man roster.

Of course Gattis would go in on robinson... Have to wonder if he didn't like Lock's not being more ruthless about the DMV guys and Maryland.

Sizeable pay bump as well. From 525K to 900K I believe for Gattis

I think you answered your own question.

Seriously though, recruiting is probably a big reason. Harbaugh dictates his somewhat old school offense, so maybe he just wanted an inexperienced OC who doesn't have his own system, but can help their passing offense.
