Well, the fact that a lot of you rival fans were jabbering about this in like May and June WAS idiotic

Dunno if that was directed at me specifically, but I was having to tell *our own* fans this back in April/May (it was doom and gloom after AA originally decommitted and not much momentum)... so definitely wasn't saying anything about Bama then. It's only been since late September/early October where I was simply surprised that "the movement" hadn't begun.

Anyone who doubts Saban's (and his staff's) ability to close, clearly hasn't been paying attention anyways... so I'm in no way indicating that I think you'll have a bad class... just that it's weird to see it take this long to really start to take shape.

Daboll?? He's gotten lots of praise for his recruiting ability in a very limited time so far. Kiffin did basically no recruiting. He's a clear recruiting upgrade there.

Criticizing Dunbar is fair game. But Daboll hasn't shown any areas for concern at all.

Fair enough. Although Kiffin did sign 5-star Barnett, Hurts and was also instrumental in getting us 5-star Tua. He seemed to connect well with elite QB's. We'll see if Dabol can do the same. Dunbar, Ansley, Key and even Locksley and Pruitt need to elevate their game though. Without question. Those guys have all been major downgrades from their predecessors on the recruiting trail thus far. That can't continue if the dynasty is to be extended beyond another 2-3 years.

Not directed at you, just rival fans in general this spring and summer acting like our class was going to be garbage because we didn't have 8 5-stars committed at the time. I do agree with you, it IS surprising and concerning that the "movement" towards an elite class hasn't begun. We all expected to add a couple of elite recruits since summer, and we just haven't been able to close the deal. Hopefully that will change in November/December as remaining targets start to commit. If we have to start hitting our B list and C list players--that will be a major red flag as for this class and this staff.

Don't want to go totally off topic here, but how long did Saban retain his initial staff after starting at Alabama? Starting to become a topic of conversation for us regarding staff getting opportunities to "move on up" elsewhere. Can't find a listing of staff members by year... was just curious. I'd say beyond all the on field and recruiting successes, Saban's ability to identify coaches and fit them into his program has really been one of the most impressive things to watch as an outsider.

Also... if you guys could go ahead and get right on flipping Copeland from UF, that would be great.

Between us and LSU, we're working on Chase... would be nice to see their 2 top WR threats bolt, and then maybe lose the QB as well.

Saban has had a ton of staff turnover from day 1. He fired his first OC after the first year, and also lost a great special teams coach around the same time. Steele was our first DC and he was gone within a couple of years as well. What Saban has always been able to do is replace guys with other coaches who were ELITE recruiters. Even if they were average on the field guys like Cristobal--they were always elite recruiters. This group Saban has assembled is the first staff that doesn't have a great recruiting pedigree. In fact, only Saban, Tosh and possibly Pruitt/Burns are known as elite recruiters. The rest seem to be average at best. That's a first for Saban as far as I can remember. Maybe he was hoping that he, Tosh and one or two others could carry the recruiting load as long as the other guys were great on the field coaches---but it doesn't look like that's working out so far. I'd suspect 2-3 staff moves in February if things don't improve drastically between now and then.

but its clear that recruiting is not a forte of Daboll or Dunbar and it is hurting us during this cycle.
losing like 2 of our top 3 recruiters from last year is what's hurting us. If given a choice between a guy who can recruit and not coach like christobal and a guy like Dunbar who can coach but is not the best recruiter, I'll take the coach. I'll take the guy who makes players better. Dunbar has produced some if the best dlines we have ever had, shuffling around through injuries.

This is really the only DL at Bama Dunbar has produced. Last year's DL was assembled by Bo Davis. The only major injury he has faced was losing Hand for 3 games. He doesn't coach the OLB's--which is where we've been hit hard with injuries. I'm not saying he's not a good coach, I'm just saying in college it's not good enough to just be a good coach while being a bad recruiter. At this level, you need to be good at both or you pay the price down the line.

I know he is less than a year on the job, but what impact has Daboll had as it pertains to recruiting.

I think that is correct most of the time but Dunbar is an exception.

Not sure but I thought coordinators didn't recruit much anyway.

I would like Tosh to replace Dunbar as DL coach and bring in a different guy to coach LBs. Tosh is a very good Line coach.

For obvious reasons, Kiffin was on a short leash, but he played a key role in our uptick in QB recruiting of late. Kirby was likely an exception, but he was a major recruiter during his time at Alabama. Super-major...

Stop bitching Jesus. Can't lose something you never had. Not like he is from Tuscaloosa. Sumlin is a couple straight loses from not even being the coach. We really are spoiled and its sad and disgusting.

Naw man, I really couldnt care less about Brown specifically, but just noticing a trend. Tim Watts posted a list of all the guys that flipped or committed after 10/27 last year... nothing to see here kinda thing.

I think there may actually be some things to be concerned about. IMO, its better than arguing about our QB situation, LOL.

Recruiting is both art and science. It's about building relationships over time, not only with recruits and their parents, but also with HS coaches and other influencers. Staff turnover can cause some temporary disruption.

I'm not too concerned -- not yet anyway -- about not having the usual number of commits at this juncture. I think we still can and probably will finish strong and fill needs well.

I’m sure we will finish with at least a top 10, hopefully top 5 or even top 3 class, but we have missed out on back to back elite Defensive Lineman with both committing to schools with a history of developing D lineman no where near Bama.
